Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 4 March 2006 20:26 (twenty years ago)

Norway to be represented by a song called "The Elf Dance"!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 4 March 2006 20:27 (twenty years ago)

That Daz Sampson thing is fucking horrible. And yet...somehow, on a mad night, I can imagine it winning. It's basically all hook, and in somewhere like Macedonia would probably pass as cutting-edge Hip Hop. Naomi pointed out that it's mostly Daz Sampson's stupid gurning face that makes it unbearable.

Raw, Uncompromising, and Noodly (noodle vague), Saturday, 4 March 2006 20:42 (twenty years ago)

Most of the chosen songs can be heard at http://www.andysesc.net/Multimedia.html

Slovenia and Belgium are my favourites so far

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Saturday, 4 March 2006 23:28 (twenty years ago)

The Las Ketchup entry sounds exactly like "The Ketchup Song". I doubt the world is ready for any more of the same. A novelty is a novelty and should be better best forgotten.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 5 March 2006 12:34 (twenty years ago)

Btw. listening to this selection of pop songs, I expect a ballad will win this year. Usually happens when the final is dominated by modern good time pop songs.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 5 March 2006 12:37 (twenty years ago)

It does not sound that much like The Ketchup Song. Nowhere near as jaunty.

VOTE BELGIUM.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 5 March 2006 13:24 (twenty years ago)

I was hoping it did. I quite like the "The Ketchup Song".

daavid (daavid), Monday, 6 March 2006 06:55 (twenty years ago)

BTW, does anybody else think that the chorus of "Asereje" (that's the actual title of "The Ketchup Song") sounds a bit like "Sound of the underground" (guitar, change of tone in the middle)?

daavid (daavid), Monday, 6 March 2006 07:02 (twenty years ago)

where are the bimbos ?

retroboy, Monday, 6 March 2006 07:10 (twenty years ago)

Britain gets a crap kids choir with LL Cool J lite Karaoke

LORDI To Represent Finland In EUROVISION SONG CONTEST - Mar. 11, 2006
http://tinyurl.com/oqrrw
Finland's hard rockers LORDI, whose live show is described as "a combination of theatre, fire and horror," have been selected as the Finnish representatives in the Eurovision Song Contest.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 11 March 2006 12:20 (twenty years ago)

I.o.w. Finland is this year's Wig Wam. :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 11 March 2006 14:02 (twenty years ago)

who have Norway selected ?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 11 March 2006 14:13 (twenty years ago)

Croatia's representative this year is that singer whose sex tape was circulating a couple of years ago.

Mitya (mitya), Saturday, 11 March 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Germany are sending country and Belgium schaffelpop (sorta)! And Switzerland Must Lose -- this kind of things only barely worked 25 years ago!

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 11 March 2006 20:22 (twenty years ago)

Listening on, I think Cyprus is even loads worse than Switzerland actually

Q: Why do the ANGELS CRY???
A: Because teh CHILDREN DIE!!!

Any bookies or exchanges opened for betting yet?

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 11 March 2006 20:36 (twenty years ago)

Surprised at how unbad the UK one is actually! It annoys me a bit not being able to recall which song it Thoroughly Rips Off, though.

Albania gets an audacity point for using Traditional Instrument (pipe, in this case) which is distinctly non-euphonious.

Croatia is mental in I think a good way.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 11 March 2006 21:02 (twenty years ago)

Iceland is disappointingly non-Goth given a singer called Silvia Night.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 11 March 2006 21:15 (twenty years ago)

I forgot to mention how arse Ireland is, didn't I?

Danes out of loop as usual. "Didn't know how to twist" -- negative message, no dice etc, regardless of turnaround in final chorus. Besides, "we" (ie Norway) used the 50s theme to win in 85, so that's used. (Actually, if I don't misremember, the then Yugoslavia sent a rockabillyish song called "Julie" (yes, exactly like the Shakin' Stevens song, except it sounded like ABBA, not our Shakes) around 81 or something.)

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 11 March 2006 21:46 (twenty years ago)

OMG Finland. I am putty. HARD! ROCK!! HALLELUJAH!!!

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 11 March 2006 23:38 (twenty years ago)

belorussia - polina smolova
ukraine - tina karol, OR irina rozenfeld, OR kirill turichenko
all four are totally unknown to me

russia - TBC, but it was *rumored* it will be JASMIN whose real name is SARA, which was a big secret some time ago.

nique (nique), Saturday, 11 March 2006 23:56 (twenty years ago)

who have Norway selected ?

"Alvedans". An "ethnic" song in Norwegian. Not at all bad, but very different from Wig Wam indeed.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 12 March 2006 00:36 (twenty years ago)

I forgot to mention how arse Ireland is, didn't I?

Eehhvery sooohhhng...ehsa crryy fah LOOF.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 12 March 2006 00:56 (twenty years ago)

Croatia's representative this year is that singer whose sex tape was circulating a couple of years ago.
And - to go offtopic for a second - it is one of the rare sex tapes worth watching. Wow.

Just found out Serbia & Montenegro are being represented by the same sucky Montenegrin boyband from last year which got us nowhere, and they got picked again because the whole Montenegrin half of the jury voted for them, while the Serbian half voted normally. Really sucks. And the winners got booed offstage while performing the winning song because the audience wanted to hear the second-placed song (which really should have won IMO, watch their performance here.. very omgwtflol-ish with the fat bald man coming in)

Oh well.

Guy Incognito (Guy Incognito), Sunday, 12 March 2006 00:58 (twenty years ago)

Or maybe they aren't...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 22:05 (twenty years ago)

Actually, no, they definitely aren't because Serbia & Montenegro have now withdrawn entirely from this year's competition.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 22:51 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
MACEDONIA IS THE BEST

luka, Friday, 31 March 2006 11:28 (twenty years ago)

The Belgian entry is greatly improved when you realise that Kate Ryan is actually singing "Shut That Door".

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 7 April 2006 09:13 (twenty years ago)

There was a big debate about the Finnish candidate (Lordi), as to whether Finland can send such a "Satanic", horrible band to represent the country. It seems there's still lots of people here who think Eurovision is some sort of serious music competition. Whereas in fact we probably have a much better chance of winning with a funny KISS pastiche than with some pseudo-ethnic "real Finnish" bullshit.

Here's the video for "Hard Rock Hallelujah":

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 7 April 2006 09:44 (twenty years ago)

Impressed by the Belgian one. But I'm backing Daz.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 7 April 2006 09:50 (twenty years ago)

the german entry wd be really good if the singer wasnt so nasal!!

fez, Friday, 7 April 2006 10:15 (twenty years ago)

...but then it wouldn't be the German entry.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 7 April 2006 11:22 (twenty years ago)

This kid should be the Finnish entry.

emil.y (emil.y), Friday, 7 April 2006 12:03 (twenty years ago)

Daz Sampson's original version of "Teenage Life" is also rather jolly: it's full-tilt Scooter-esque Eurobosh, with quiet bits where the kids' chorus comes in. It's credited variously to Rikki & Daz, or to Spacekats.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 7 April 2006 12:54 (twenty years ago)

LET'S TALK MORE ABOUT ICELAND'S ENTRY!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 7 April 2006 19:05 (twenty years ago)

There's no way to watch this in the US, is there? I'm a sucker for these kinds of singing competitions.

musically (musically), Friday, 7 April 2006 19:25 (twenty years ago)

Competitions ? This one's useful for monitoring old & current feuds/alliances between countries, sublimating the urge to kill each other through the fart of song.

Bambaataa would be proudaa (blunt), Friday, 7 April 2006 23:20 (twenty years ago)

It's usually webcast from a couple of different sources -- I'll post one as we get closer.

Finns shocked by Eurovision band

Finland's controversial entry for this year's Eurovision Song Contest - a heavy metal band called Lordi (The Lord) - has upset many Finns. http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41581000/jpg/_41581402_singerlordi203.jpg

The band members wear scary masks, which they refuse to take off, and the lead singer wields a chain-saw.

Their song Hard Rock Hallelujah is a radical departure from the folk songs usually associated with Eurovision.

Finnish online chatrooms are full of comments from people concerned about their country's reputation abroad.

Some Finns have even asked the president to intervene.

But Lordi was a people's choice: their hit got more than 42% of the votes cast by televoting in the Finnish final.

Devil's advocate?

Lordi, influenced by the American hard rock band Kiss and its lead singer Gene Simmons, has not escaped allegations of links with
Satanism

Rumours have been fuelled by the group's refusal to give television interviews, to take off their masks or reveal their real names.

But in other media interviews, the rockers have stressed their tongue-in-cheek attitude to entertainment. As if to prove the point, they had a hit in Finland with a song called The Devil Is A Loser.

Hailing from Arctic Lapland, Lordi became a phenomenon in Finland with a platinum-selling debut album, Get Heavy, in 2002.

Their compilation album The Monster Show has been released in more than 20 countries.

The Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Greece on 20 May.

Father Mitro Repo, an Orthodox Christian clergyman in Helsinki, described the band's use of the name "Lordi" as "sacrilege".

"I think it's a stupid joke of Finland," he told the BBC's World Today programme, commenting on the country's Eurovision choice.

"Lord have mercy on us Finnish people now," he said, adding that the choice appeared to be a protest by youngsters annoyed that Finland had failed to score highly in Eurovision.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 21 April 2006 01:59 (twenty years ago)

Lordi rules!!!!!

geeta (geeta), Friday, 21 April 2006 04:58 (twenty years ago)

"Finnish online chatrooms are full of comments from people concerned about their country's reputation abroad."

I think this is the general opinion of each country's entry every year anyway. Good to see some metal in Eurovision.

Stone (stone), Friday, 21 April 2006 13:38 (twenty years ago)

Q: are Lordi copying GWAR re image?

Q: What will Wogan make of Lordi?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 21 April 2006 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Vote For Estonia!
Vote For Sandra!

Indrek, Wednesday, 3 May 2006 08:09 (twenty years ago)

"the folk songs usually associated with Eurovision"???

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 08:18 (twenty years ago)

I mean yeah ok http://www.nrk.no/img/459493.jpeg but still

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 08:19 (twenty years ago)

The Finnish entry is of course unlistenable, like everything within its genre, but those masks are fun and original at least.
