yeah north = trance, south = garage, in terms of dance music. most northerly for garage production = sheffield. this is a dud for me. although, vast majority of good electronica from north. this is very good. not so much in terms of producers, but in terms od scene/interest/nights etc.

industrial cliches?

i'm consistently impressed by scotland for electronic, avant rock and folksy/rootsy musics. when i lived in the u.k. it seemed like the majority of it was a cultural wasteland (something that directly contributed to me leaving the country) but i fell in love with glasgow and the great music that comes from there.

london and manchester are very good too in my opinion. except for london's obsession with CRAP garage. i don't disagree with it as a genre (and some of it is really good) but only how mindless and populist it is. there's no escaping it!

East Anglia has a reasonably high instance of drum and bass producers...

Photek, Klute, Omni Trio, EZ Rollers, Peshay and a load more that i've forgotten are all (or have been) based in Norfolk / Suffolk and the surrounding area

Add to that various other Norfolk/Suffolk dwellers including Mark Hollis from Talk Talk, Chris & Cosey, Dave Clague ex Bonzo Dog Band and half of Autechre are a few which come to mind.....

two years pass...
Hi. I'm doing a dissertation on the North/South divide in music. I'd appreciate you guys' thoughts on what seperates the two both stylistically and in attitude.

Sorry Martin, can't really help you on your plea, but going back to The Photek debate: yes, he came from St Albans, but he discovered Jungle while living with his parents who had moved to Ipswich - he was hanging around with Paul Arnold and various other people connected to Certificate 18 records prior to it moving to London - he released stuff on them under his 'Studio Pressure' tag.

After getting his major label deal, Photek used to wheel up in his fancy cars and buy stereos from my dad's shop.
