Um having come up with this v.obvious thread idea I can't think of any.

Normally when I read reviews (particularly in NME) where they dismiss something as "pretentious", I tend to think "Ooh, I might buy that then"

jamesmichaelward, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

if it says "album of the century", or "soon to be classic," thats my hint to turn and run.

"... Captain Beefheart ... Abba .... "

Must both be used in the same review

Dave225, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Between the unlistenable self-indulgence of Captain Beefheart and the crass pop banalities of Abba sits the excellent Coldplay..."

willem, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Seeing the name of a writer I respect and enjoy at the bottom, is the main thing. I'm rarely if ever fully convinced by a review alone, though.

i was just about to contribute a more serious answer when clarke came up with his: the name of the reviewer is usually a good 'marker'. however, it requires some time to get to know the musical preferences of a reviewer; you have to built up something like a one-way relationship.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Music reviews are too subjective by their very nature... It's not so much the money lost upon purchase of a dud album... but you feel sort of used and dorky to have skipped the listening station or the online samples. Can't think of anything in a review that would get me that excited... but I can think of tons of things that would signify a no- go; things like "Tortoise-esque," "emo," and "next big thing."

Tim DiGravina, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
