Can we talk about Waves/Death Suite?
I mean... can we, please?

Death Suite:

I feel like I'm street teaming or something here. I love the A-side. Utterly loathe the B-side. Curious as to what people who actually know about this kind of music are going to say about it, opposed to my knee-jerk reactions.
― seni seviyorum / senden nefret ediyorum (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 13:59 (fifteen years ago)
Come on, no love for Waves?
Got promo 320s of these and the sound is lush.
Waves is just sooooooo WET. As you would expect.
― seni seviyorum / senden nefret ediyorum (Masonic Boom), Sunday, 9 August 2009 09:41 (fifteen years ago)
I would love to comment on these!! if I had decent-sounding files to listen to... hint hint....

Can't share. He'd kill me. And he KNOWS WHERE I LIVE. :-P
Ah, they're coming out properly on the 31st August.
It's really quite weird, I've found myself totally divided by the two halfs of the single. Waves is one of my singles of the year, I think (it's way better than the clip above, there's so much detail, so much textural overlapping going on) - but I HATE HATE HATE Death Suite with an utter passion.
Which is weird. It's actually quite impressive, considering 90% of music I hear is "meh" - that in one single, I can have two such extreme responses.
If I were gonna be cynical, I'd say they were hedging their bets, with one side being all lush and cosmic in a Siriusmo/Aeroplane vibe, and the other being really harsh and tech acid revival without the acid - to see what's the sound of the summer. But the split personality might be down to their two personalities intersecting on the record. (don't really like much Boys Noize, TBH)
― EVET! (Masonic Boom), Monday, 10 August 2009 09:30 (fifteen years ago)
i am fond of the odd boys noize thing, gets a bit wearing after about 10 minutes tho. mind you he goes out of character sometimes, the cut copy and (iirc) feist remixes from last year have a bit of a lighter touch.
k8 i guess you know erol's hot chip remix? still the best thing he's done. i reckon.
― "woah man, flügelhorn" (haitch), Monday, 10 August 2009 09:58 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, that's the thing - you hear one BN track and it's like WHOA, YEAH but then you hear more than about 5 minutes, and it's like... stop. Please.
I said the b-side (which is more BN to my thick ears) was like the sound of being fucked to death by angry nanorobots but they liked that so much they threatened to nick it. ::rolls eyes::
Anyway, that's a lie, coz the best thing Erol has ever done is still Beyond The Wizards Sleeve Arc 1. The original material that *they* are working on is what I really really really want to hear. It will be even better than Waves, of that I am sure.
― hüzün (Masonic Boom), Monday, 10 August 2009 10:08 (fifteen years ago)
OK, I had forgotten that Hot Chip remix - listening to it a lot right now coz it suits my mood. It's amazing how he can take a track I didn't really like to start with, and pull something beautiful and amazing out of it.
Now why couldn't he do the same thing to that horrible BN track, ha ha? Kidding.
― hüzün (Masonic Boom), Monday, 10 August 2009 11:10 (fifteen years ago)
since you've made the point that no-one else can hear it, after reviving the thread by asking everyone to talk about something that no-one knows about, the lack of love is no surprise
was rly surprised by how much I liked the BN remix of Royksopp though
― more funny and original than, 'ow you say, a penis (sic), Monday, 10 August 2009 12:28 (fifteen years ago)
I have posted two YouTube links showing both songs in their entirety if you want to hear them. There are previews on both artists' MySpaces.
But if you ask me to illegally share tracks (given to me in good faith) on a messageboard where filesharing is prohibited, sorry but my answer is no.
These tracks have been played out at lots of festivals both in the UK and in Europe - oh, and also on the radio this weekend - so the chances that someone else might have heard them by now is quite good.

Ah fuck, damn PC. I wanted to say, take a flipping chill pill, dude. Just a question.

My connection is too slow to tell for certain, but I believe you can listen to Waves here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/zanelowe/2009/08/hottest_record_erol_alkan_boys.html
(it's Annie Mac, not Zane Lowe, don't let the URL put you off)
― hüzün (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 11 August 2009 20:11 (fifteen years ago)
i like both these tracks a lot, sort of confused by your reaction kate because they both sound cut from the same cloth to me
― moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 20:17 (fifteen years ago)
They're not the same at all!
Waves has that wonderful lovely looping arpeggiated sound with heavy phasing and swooshy sounds, it's lush and textural and very organic sounding. Also, it's highly melodic - I can sing along with it. Lovely whooping bass sound, kind of pulsing and gentle.
Death Suite is much more mechanical and metallic sounding, I find it quite abrasive. And also so minimal I can't really find a melody or anything to hang onto. It's just a series of very ugly and dissonant rhythmic interfaces in an unconnected fashion. Oh, and those HORRIBLE HORRIBLE overly loud Roland drum machine cymbals.
― hüzün (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 11 August 2009 20:31 (fifteen years ago)
LOL at the cymbal comment. I never really noticed but yeah, they are a bit aggravating to the senses. I wonder why they did that? Also the acid bleeps are kinda uninspired compared to, you know, Fatboy Slim. But I can still dig it. Waves is flawless though.
― everything, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 21:24 (fifteen years ago)
I was only mildly irritated by the cymbals until I experienced them in the front row of a festival sound system. Then they went from mildly irritating to ABSOLUTELY FREAKING PAINFUL hands over yr ears territory.
But I don't want to dwell on that. Waves is flawless, isn't it? Want to slip it in a set between Siriusmo's High Together and some Aeroplane remix and just love the arpeggiated lushness.
― hüzün (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 08:50 (fifteen years ago)
have now been able to play the youtubes, and both of them sound like a ringtone of Altern-8 farting, at that sound quality

Arc One is one of those albums that when friends come over and you stick it on, everyone loves it and has to know what it is etc. It's very much the Moon Safari of 2009. Do I need to get the reanimations disc?
― everything, Monday, 17 August 2009 17:41 (fifteen years ago)
(what is Arc One?)
― claws of jungle red (Stevie D), Monday, 17 August 2009 18:03 (fifteen years ago)
ohhhh nevermind
― claws of jungle red (Stevie D), Monday, 17 August 2009 18:05 (fifteen years ago)
Of course you need to get the Reanimations disc. It's very different, but it's still a very similar sort of vibe.
I can't freaking WAIT for the proper BTWS album. That is just going to be the most amazing thing to end all amazingness.
I am a big ole fangurl sucker. Had to order the limited edition special signed Waves/DS 12" from Pure Groove.
― hüzün (Masonic Boom), Monday, 17 August 2009 19:08 (fifteen years ago)
My vinyl hoarding genes are (thankfully) completely moribund so it's good ol' fashioned mp3s for me. This music sounds great for summer here in the Pacific Northwest. Driving or cycling around or just zoning out on the beach it's just perfect. I was in a sausage shop the other day and to my pleasure Erol's mix of Boy From School started playing over the PA. I just had to order an alcoholic beverage as soon as possible and do some relaxing. I need as much of this stuff as I can get my hands on before summer is gone!
― everything, Monday, 17 August 2009 20:00 (fifteen years ago)
Reanimations is totally Alkan's and Norris's balearic summer brotherhood of beach beardiness.
(I honestly feel like I'm street teaming here)
OH I AM SO MISERABLE I AM NOT GOING TO GET TO GO TO GREEN MAN AND SEE THEM WAAH WAAH BOO HOO HOO HOOOO HOOO.
― hüzün (Masonic Boom), Monday, 17 August 2009 20:03 (fifteen years ago)
Oh! If you buy it on iTunes (at least in the UK?) you get the reanimations album, and you get a special hour-long mix as well. (It's just the tunes off the album, but it is wonderful - like having your own beardy wizards to mix the album for you.)
― hüzün (Masonic Boom), Monday, 17 August 2009 20:05 (fifteen years ago)
In a far too belated attempt to keep up with what they are doing, I became a fan of them on Facebook today, so now I totally know what you are talking about. I'm way behind on all of this. I only just got Arc One like, three weeks ago. I'm going to get that Reanimations thingy ASAP.
― everything, Monday, 17 August 2009 20:12 (fifteen years ago)
I am going to listen to Ark 1 now because you have reminded me how much I love it!
I've got a whole folder in my iTunes for BTWS and their mixes and live sets and radio shows and Erol's Psychedelic Banquet.
I think I scare them how much I love them, ha ha.
Everyone has their favourite reanimation, but most people tend to agree that Roscoe is pretty special (I love Come Hear The Trumpets and Raise The Roof myself, but it changes every time I listen to the album)
― hüzün (Masonic Boom), Monday, 17 August 2009 20:28 (fifteen years ago)
Listen, "Waves" and "Death Suite" sound slapped together, ill-produced, and boring. The first two tracks of Ark 1, however, have been very nice.
― claws of jungle red (Stevie D), Tuesday, 18 August 2009 04:29 (fifteen years ago)
This is quite pleasantly reminding me of "Decksanddrumsandrockandroll"
― claws of jungle red (Stevie D), Tuesday, 18 August 2009 04:38 (fifteen years ago)
Don't agree about Waves. I think it's sublime. Probably do agree about Death Suite, though.
― hüzün (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 18 August 2009 08:55 (fifteen years ago)
They kind of sound the same to me.
― claws of jungle red (Stevie D), Tuesday, 18 August 2009 17:13 (fifteen years ago)
They sound nothing alike! They're totally different and...
Oh shit. I'm beginning to be able to tell tiny microgenres of electronic dance music apart and debate them ferociously on the internets. I HAVE BEEN ON ILX TOO LONG.
― hüzün (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 18 August 2009 17:15 (fifteen years ago)
"Waves" is certainly more pleasing to the ear and "Death Suite" more difficult, but they have a great deal of foundational similarity
― claws of jungle red (Stevie D), Tuesday, 18 August 2009 17:29 (fifteen years ago)
I don't listen to song structure! I listen to sounds! ;-)
― hüzün (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 18 August 2009 19:28 (fifteen years ago)
decided i like death suite better than waves
― moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 18 August 2009 20:44 (fifteen years ago)
noooooo... not the rapey nanorobot song!
― hüzün (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 18 August 2009 20:52 (fifteen years ago)
i think i like the new chemical brothers track (the one that blows up at 5:50 in the second video) better than either death suite OR waves
― moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 25 August 2009 22:14 (fifteen years ago)

Lemonade Avalanche?
― There's Always Been A Dance Element To (Masonic Boom), Friday, 26 February 2010 11:54 (fifteen years ago)
I listened to the little previews. Based on these, Lemonade promises more than Avalanche, which seems a bit conventional. But it's hard to tell from just a minute or so.
― everything, Friday, 26 February 2010 17:53 (fifteen years ago)
They've been playing Lemonade out. It sounds quite different on a massive sound system.
(I really was hoping it would be one massive psychedelic epic called Lemonade Avalanche, was quite disappointed to discover it was two separate tracks.)
― There's Always Been A Dance Element To (Masonic Boom), Friday, 26 February 2010 18:00 (fifteen years ago)
The sound seemed a little bit abrasive, not that I have a problem with that. It's part of the aesthetic really - that it's not smooth as silk. But yeah, I have to hear the whole thing blasting out loud and not in a tiny snippet through these silly headphones. Chances of me hearing it in a club are very low though. I think Erol is playing in California in the spring. That has set me dreaming about a road trip. Man, that would be nice.
