why are so many people on I Love Music so incredibly highly strung?

You Love Music but, well, you hate people.* You remind me of that comics guy on The Simpsons, but with unhealthy obsession for records instead of comics. I can imagine the responses I'll be getting to this. I'll read them, but after that I ain't coming back. While many of you write very well, sometimes even with interesting things to say, you're just not worth the teeth-grit. I feel like I've entered a room full of enraged wasps every time I log on.

Thanks For The Memories.

*There are exceptions...

i'm sorry you feel this way. there are highly strung people, yes, that much is obvious! but why not stay, make it more how you would like. obviously i don't know who you are (the anonymity round here is something that confuses me!), but i guess a 'regular' of some description. stay, and make it less highly strung, i say...

gareth, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well said Gareth.

I Love Music, but I love people even more.

Especially the odd ones...

Daniel, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Reminds me of an old Far Side comic. God is in the kitchen creating earth in a roasting pan. And he says, "just to make things interesting..." as he sprinkes on a dash of "Jerks".

Dave225, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is far easier to be spiteful to someone on the internet than to his/her face. Sometimes arguments get heated, that's all.

Julio Desouza, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think that many people are. But obviously they tend to be rather noticeable when they're ahem.. doing their thing. This kind of thing bothers me a lot on mailing lists and USENET but the LUSENET format generally succeeds in not letting it detract attention from everything else, in my opinion.

N., Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dude, they are expressing themselves, dastoor just wants to spoil all the fun.

gareth, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Obvious question: who are the *exceptions?

Enraged Wasp, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that needed one of those emoticon things didn't it? it looked like i was being serious and shit (insert picture of smiling face with ironic expression and tongue sticking out slightly in a kitsch yet loveable way)

memo to daniel: "we LOVE it" (surely?)

i think the last coupla weeks here HAS been a wee bit sour and unfun, but i blame the weather mainly not the people => spring is nearly here = all ILM will soon be bedhopping once more

mark s, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

MARK YOU EVIL PIG SOME OF US ARE MOVING INTO AUTUMN!! YOUR SPRING IS SHALLOW AND FALSE!!!

Tim, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jeff W (genrephobe and proud), Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i am ready!

gareth, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"not worth the teeth-grit" is a nice turn of phrase.

It's easy to be overly defensive if not incredibly highly strung here, and I'd agree that we could all lighten up. More often than not people do have good-natured disagreements and write complimentary things about one another's writing, it's just that the unpleasant stuff stands out more. Ultimately, I think it is worth the teeth-grit. Hope you'll stick around.

Listen to me, Cow, you ASSHOLE, go and FUCK YOUR OWN ASSHOLE YOU FUCKIN ASSHOLE YOU'VE NEVER BEEN MADE HOMELESS OR HAD CANCER YOU DON'T FUCKIN UNDERSTAND! I HATE LIFE so that's why I'm on I LOVE MUSIC because i HATE it marginally less than I HATE my FUCKIN JOB THIS OFFICE IS RUN BY ASSHOLES u never reply to me Suzy I heart U ;)

Bally Bess, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What do you mean, bedhopping? Do not assume what I want. Don't open your mouth without first making a fully formulated constructive thought pattern. I do not want to hop in your bed. I have a Hugh Hopper CD on my bed at present which I am pregnant with expectation about hearing. Do not assume that my sociability has no bounds ;)

Dullio Da Blouza, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd say that in comparison to most web forums/news groups, this place is no more full of conflict. Despite having complained about the "ILM mafia" the other day, in a moment of rhetorical overload, I would say that ILM seems relatively welcoming. (The core group of people who have been here for a long time, some of whom write for the same online zines and know each other personally shouldn't have to apologize for associating with each other virtually or otherwise.)

I do think there is more of an ILM consensus than what many of the community leaders here would be willing to admit, but that's another matter.

DeRayMi, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

we are the rhizomatic reich = we are utter total pluralists until you disagree with us slightly

julio that made me LOL (ps speaking of which i sawe L*L C*XHILL on the bus last week)

(blimey "community leaders" that DOES put the cat among the carrot-flavoured turkish delight)

mark s, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ILM is the just about the only moderated forum that has sustained my interest for more than a few weeks. The others eventually make me feel like I'm hanging around a "dry" cocktail party. The leash here feels really quite comfortable!

Curt, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dullio da Blouza= not me (show your real self). And I don't have a hugh hopper CD (though i have got a soft machine album).

Mark= what is LOL.

As a matter of fact I intend to see Lol Coxhill's gig at the Sound 323 record shop on saturday.

oops, sorry julio

mark s, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Seriously, I do hate most people. Don't you?

HOW DARE YOU suggest I'm highly strung!

(with material like this the world's my oyster, baby)

DG, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Seriously, I do hate most people. Don't you?

Too much energy wasted. I don't actively hate unless a reason is clear.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You are just seeing one side of people. Do you think Charlie Chaplin was a joker all the time? So what if people (here) are serious about music and dissect it? If it gives them gratification, then that's what they should do. Also, I think internet/email tends to *erase* a lot. When some comments are made, I am sure it is meant tongue in cheek but others might think it's an attack on their taste.

nathalie, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Too much energy wasted. I don't actively hate unless a reason is clear.

I don't actively hate, I passively hate! As in, my default mode is to hate you, unless you prove to me otherwise. Kinda like Tanya Headon on a broader but less thoughtful and attentive scale.

Actually, IRL people seem to think I'm a very nice guy. But I hate them anyway.

J, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

honestly, in my experience with all varieties of online music forums, this is probably one of the least high strung. sure, there's the occasionally thorny topic or individual, but i'd say it's below average by a bit. seems a lot more toward playful ball-busting than uber-defensive opinion police you see on a lot of boards and lists.

al, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Very interesting post - something I should have brought up myself in the past but failed to do so (laziness, I guess).

It's a brilliant forum, largely because the range of the music tastes discussed here is pretty staggering. I thought I had catholic tastes, but apparently I lag a long way behind certain others. Whatever, the joy is in discovering something completely fresh and unexpected, and the combination of ILM and Audiogalaxy is fucking unbeatable in my opinion.

However, I do agree with the post. the main problem I see is that when any cliches are forwarded about genres or artists (without a knowing recognition that they are cliches), they are often dismissed with a weariness that doesn't take into account whether or not those cliches might in fact be true, Just cos it's been said before, or just cos it's a little muscially un-PC, doesn't mean it's not right.

Regardless, ILM is an essential daily read, and way superior to anything you can purchase on the High Street. Congratulations all.

When i start to feel like this I just log on to another board for awhile:

If you think this is bad, you should check out some of the computer/video games fora/newsgroups/whatever sometime.*

*Except for most Ultima Dragons hangouts (Ultima Series hangouts, that is. Ultima Online hangouts are different.) and rec.*.int-fiction. Then again, the folks on rec.*.int-fiction have been a little testy lately.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I had a dream the other night that involved the Guardian's big red face, and someone's bedroom. I don't remember the rest. And I haven't played those games in years.

Dare, Tuesday, 12 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sounds like the beginning of Ultima 7 to me.
