Music on TV (new BBC show)

The BBC are launching a new music show. Right now it's only at the pilot stage, but here's a link to the Drowned In Sound story http://www.drownedinsound.com/content/view/681186

From what I've heard (and I'm doing bits of work for them, so in the loop) it sounds pretty damn good and I know it's made by people who genuinely do care about music.

What do you guys reckon? And about music on TV in general? (I've had a look through the archives, but I don't think we've talked about it much.)

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 12:53 (nineteen years ago)

I'm all for it!

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

Russel Kane!

(not Russel Brand then?)

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

Russel confusion seems to be rife in maany areas. no, not Russel Grant either.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 12:58 (nineteen years ago)

Why have none of these Russel's got two L's?

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

... that sounds like the beginning of a joke, but it isn't

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

Bad title.

Still too much empthasis on live performance. If they are to do this would prefer just showing footage from proper gigs. Would also prefer more reportage, artists communicating directly/talking about more than just their music. And I like artists talking to each other which to their credit the people behind Jo Whiley's old C4 show managed to do well (of COURSE it's going to be pretentious but that's not necess a bad thing) but strange that this was never kept up.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

Listening to musicians talking? I can think of few things more dull.

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

"we're looking to shake up music on television and create a truly credible programme with attitude."

alarm bells ringing here with this talk of 'attitude'. forget about attitude and trying to be cool. just try creating a programme that actually INFORMS people about music rather than just trying to entertain them.

idealistic i know.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

I wish it well, but yeah the whole "guerrilla" thing feels like the year before last's hype-blip; it seems like the kind of idea a branding/ad company would come up with. And I can't stand Zane... nor Annie nor Russell.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

Well at least that'll be the end of guerilla gigs, assuming they ever really happen. They will soon look like something off Noel's House Party, big lights in the street, cheering neighbours, etc.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

Funny you should mention Noel Edmonds, cos this sort of sounds like Swap Shop where you used to have to try and guess where the swap would be held each week. Creeping chegwinisation of the media, says I.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 13:19 (nineteen years ago)

But when the BBC get round to showing all the episodes of 1973's "Electric Folk With Steeleye Span" - that's the truly vital question that needs to be asked.

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

Oh god I remember that! "Bachelor's hall... Batchelor's haallll! Women keep away from my doooor...."

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

I wish I'd seen it!

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

I really want The Chart Show back.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

And Dance Energy but obv. that's not going to happen.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

I'll be voting to see Split Enz.

They should stick in a kind of Chart show - Video Vault section with clips of Old Grey Whistle Test/Rock Goes To College sessions.

JohnFoxxsJuno (JohnFoxxsJuno), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

hahaha - chart show!

JohnFoxxsJuno (JohnFoxxsJuno), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

That Steeleye programme sounds grim and I'm a fan.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

Sounding grim was what Steeleye were all about in those days!

Rotatey Diskers With Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

bring back:

Snub TV

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

I thought non hit-parade muso-tv never works cos the public's taste is too divergent- hence most people will be disatisfied by a given artist featured... unless its a top-ten run-down type thing... such programmes are always dire anyway... Later with Jools anyone???(UK obv...) And the last thing we need is "people who really care about music"---- ie some middle-brow dreck like corrine bailey rae or suchlike...

gekoppel, Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

And surprise surprise it'll be hosted by that tit-wad Zane lowe... it augurs well...

gekoppel, Tuesday, 7 March 2006 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

"surprise suprise"? What makes you say that, bearing in mind this will be his first appearance on BBC TV?

Sure, he's been on MTV for ages, but beeb-wise it's just been his radio show until now.

rotundo, Wednesday, 8 March 2006 09:46 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't get past the "Zane Lowe" bit.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 10:20 (nineteen years ago)

I'm more of an Arthur Lowe man myself.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

I kno wthey've confirmed Kano.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 10:23 (nineteen years ago)

And The Guillemots.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

It does sound like the sort of show that should be on TV. But BBC Three? Are enough of the target audience really watching? If not is this why BBC Three has been rubbish for music thus far (I mentioned the Recovered thing on another thread before)?

On another another thread a while back I mentioned the BBC Choice days where there was a revived Beat Club and this was actually not bad although seemed not very well calculated or clinical (can be a good thing) - Stereolab videos, Dakar & Grinser in the studio and so on. Seven years or so ago.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

who is "the music researcher" of this programme?

pass these ideas on, i say get these on screen:

Bark Psychosis
Jesu
Zan Lyons
Digitonal
Boxcutter
Nathan Fake
Aereogramme
The Durutti Column
Pure Reason Revolution
Patrick Wolf

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

Is Zan Lyons still going?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

yes

http://www.zanlyons.com

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

Martian, 1989 has gone and it's never coming back.

Venga (Venga), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

Um...in response to your wanting Snub back.

Venga (Venga), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

Personally, if they can persuade Bill Fay or Kate Bush to go on one of these programmes I'd definitely watch it. And Plan B, and the Shortwave Set, and David Sylvian and/or Fennesz....

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah sure, and add Scott Walker to that list...
I can just imagine Zane presenting with such a line up... Its the simple economics/demographics of it which mean that TV and (interesting) music don't mix, unless its publicly funded and with an overt "high-brow"/"couldn't give a shit about viewing figures" type remit. Is this on BBC 3? Its going to be an embarassing wannabe-relevant pseudo trendy car-crash... With shitloads of "real" music by "real" musicians (shudders)and some cringe-worthy completely pointless and mis-guided excerpts from more exciting black/electronic scenes. Altho I have to admit seeing Dizzee Rascal being interviewed by Jools on later a few years back is one of my all-time tv comedy moments....

gekoppel, Wednesday, 8 March 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

...second only to said Mr Holland accompanying a Megaman rap with his unilateral boogie woogie piano magic a year or two before Dizzee.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 9 March 2006 08:38 (nineteen years ago)

i don't remember Dizzee on Jools being that funny, what did i miss?

are BBC 3 viewing figures actually that good?

here's today's schedule:

19:00 The House of Tiny Tearaways (useless parents, control your brats)
20:00 Anthea Turner: Perfect Housewife (how to be a good little woman at home choosing the right curtains so your husband doesn't beat you or something - fucked up)
this is followed by 60 Seconds - news for those with too short an attention span to really care
21:00 Honey, We're Killing the Kids (useless parents, control your brats part 2)
22:00 EastEnders (amazingly accurate portrayal of life in East London)
22:30 The Real Hustle (see because BBC have a fictional show called Hustle - so this is the flipside showing how it really is, or something. whatevs)
23:00 Kick Ass Miracles (martial arts thing)
23:30 Wedding Stories (FUCK OFF)
repeats of everything you just saw then follow, until:
03:20 Desperate Midwives (omg DYS! seems like they only came up with this show just so they could use this title)

i don't know who they're trying to appeal to now. all of these programmes are just BBC1 mainstream cast-offs. what junk.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 9 March 2006 11:27 (nineteen years ago)

Now there's talk of forcing the BBC to stick to its public service remit and leave this sort of programming to ITV1, where it belongs.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 9 March 2006 11:37 (nineteen years ago)

On another another thread a while back I mentioned the BBC Choice days where there was a revived Beat Club and this was actually not bad although seemed not very well calculated or clinical (can be a good thing) - Stereolab videos, Dakar & Grinser in the studio and so on. Seven years or so ago.

-- Konal Doddz (stevem7...), March 8th, 2006.

That would be the Beat Room. First series was produced by Duglas T Stewart of the BMX Bandits and it sounded great! When it finally got to BBC2 though they had less control over the bands and it lost its identity somewhat.
BBC Scotland recently did the imaginatively titled Music Show which was a big disappointment. They had plenty of good bands involved (and some stinkers, but hey), but they just filmed them in the dullest possible way. When they had live concert footage didn't use the live audio but rather the studio version - what's the point? The only time it worked was when they had a Belle & Seb special and recorded a whole set live in the studio. At least that had some energy to it. For all of Laters' faults, the everyone live in one studio format does give it a certain energy.
I hpe Guerilla is ok, but the name is rubbish, as are Zane and Annie Mac. The stuff she recommends on the Culture Show is painful!

stew!, Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

Not seen her on telly but I actually quite enjoyed the few Annie Mac shows I heard on the radio. Only heard the odd one or two though mind.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

Get Michael Barrymore to host instead, and move the show to peaktime BBC1.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

I do think BBC Three has failed and now seems a superfluous exercise, considering the above schedule is really just daytime TV for 30something parents - this wasn't the original demographic was it?

I think a BBC Four music show could be terrific though - a global reportage type thing ideally, a heard-but-not-seen narrator exploring favela funk, Congotronics, J-punk, Baghdad grime blah blah.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

Andy bloody Kershaw more like.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

Transworld Splurt

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

yes TWS was exactly the model i was thinking of.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

That's how I sort of remember Rapido, when I remember it at all. Me, I'm still waiting for a free improv version of the Hitman & Her.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

*heh heh heh* (rubs hands, cackles with glee, etc.)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

(the evolution of bbc digital channels is interesting (i never had access during the bbc choice days, mores the pity) anyway:

http://www.meldrum.co.uk/mhp/identzone/bbc_choice/

first night's schedule
http://www.tvradiobits.co.uk/tellyyears/launchtv.htm#choice

a-z of shows (the great egg race!)
http://www.tvradiobits.co.uk/choice/choice.htm
)

i'm afraid this'll just turn out to be more like The Observer Music Magazine rather than, say, classic Whistle Test.

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

INSIDE TRACKS (1998-2000) - Part of Choice's launch schedule, this was a rather good music/discussion series with Kevin Greening (left), presented from the BBC's Maida Vale studios. It veered towards the credible end of the music scene, with features and live sessions from the likes of Cousteau, Broadcast and The Delgados. Later on it was halved in length to thirty minutes, with the consequence that there was now less music and more discussion. Sean Hughes took over at the start of 2000, but the programme was stopped in its tracks soon after. The theme tune was 'Start the Commotion' by Wiseguys.

woah, never saw this but would like to.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

in fact a lot of the Choice shows sounds perversely decent! now that we've got to the stage where more people actually watch the digital channels a lot of that stuff deserves revival. or at least put it all up on the internet for downloading.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

stop complaining and watch titty bang bang.

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 9 March 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

is that their new slogan?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 9 March 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

runners-up:

BBC Three - Oh Come On It Could Still Be A Hell Of A Lot Worse
BBC Three - Unique Funding, Unique Viewer
BBC Three - Bagpiping Toss Into Shite
BBC Three - Because Someone Has To Keep Will Mellor Off The Streets

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 9 March 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, it seemed with Choice that cos nobody watched it they could get away with making all kinds of funny wee programmes. Whereas now they put on mindless shite they think people will watch...

BBC4 seems to have some excellent music stuff, but it tends to be on the documentary side, rather than an up to date more credible Later type show.

stew!, Thursday, 9 March 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

i note that BBC4's launch night included Baaba Maal in concert.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 9 March 2006 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

Matisyahu and The Raconteurs also confirmed.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 16 March 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

Matisyahu - this sounds like a new name for branded electrical goods from dixons or currys

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raconteurs
featuring NME faves Jack White

...where is the british talent that i suggested upthread?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 16 March 2006 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

they're not aiming that obscure/unknown i guess

GRIMEY SIMEY, Friday, 17 March 2006 02:29 (nineteen years ago)

Final live line up is:

The Raconteurs,
Kano,
Jose Gonzalez
Guilemots

Plus one more band for the secret gig and an unsigned act.

Anna (Anna), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

Am I alone in detesting Guilemots? Their singer wears a truckers cap, they sound like a jazzier coldplay.... stil Kano's alright....

gek-opel, Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

Check it out!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/guerilla/

Hang on, it says Radio 1...

Meanwhile, it's 1973 week on BBC4.

At last! A TV show about real music.
