whoooo…boy…tuff one! for the moment SS is best, since MC's shitty, horribly toned lick on "woman in love" comes to mind…

Mike Campbell for co-writing "Boys of Summer" and for fronting a really good surf side project. And for providing some of the shortest, simplest, most tasteful guitar solos (see: "You Got Lucky," "I Won't Back Down"). Though Steve Stevens did, if memory serves, record a flamenco record. Don't know if that's a pro or con.

I think you're confusing Steve with flamenco maestro Esteban, who just happened to save a lot of money on his car insurance.

I gotta go with Mike Campbell: he's taller and his playing is easily more tasteful.

Admittedly, the footage I have seen of Stevens playing flamenco involves him using a pick, so it is certainly non-traditional. It's still better than Esteban's cheez-wiz.

Both brilliant players and consummate collaborators.

I just found out that Campbell has a side project and plays out ocassionally in the LA area. Woo-hoo! Also, he's rockin' a full beard and dreads these days, and looks great! More at www.thedirtyknobs.com

For equal time, Steve's official site is www.stevestevens.net, and it's awesome in its own way. Do not miss out on the guitar collection slideshow featuring killer guitars, amps, and scantily-clad rawk chix0rz. Classic.

His surf group was/is called the Blue Stingrays. When I saw Tom Petty a few years ago he let Campbell and the Heartbreakers do a three or so song set of surf tunes.

That weird occilating guitar effect Steve Stevens gets in "Rebel Yell" vs. Mike Campbell dropping those cool Ennio Morricone/Duane Eddy style licks in "You Got Lucky"

It that particular case, I'd call that one a tie, as both are some pretty wicked guitar tricks.

Johnny Marr.

Well, Steve Stevens wins, 'cause Campbell's never really had a chance to show off, and who even knows (or CARES, even) which parts are his and which are Petty's. (But Stevens nearly blows it all by playing one of those horrible guitar-synth thingies back in the day - as egregious an offense to the eyes as anything Chapman or Steinberger ever blessed us with. Luckily, they apparently also played lousy, and soon vanished. Man, '80s guitars was ugly.)

two weeks pass...
Cambell blows away Stevens with his amp on standby...

i guess you've never seen the heartbreakers play? petty always gives campbell a song or two to just showboat. he's one of the best guitarists i've ever seen, easily.

Word. Seeing Campbell play live is the only way to judge his awesomeness.

That said, I'm torn between Stevens & Campbell...don't think I could pick. Stevens blew my mind with the acoustic stuff he did on Billy Idol's 'Storytellers' gig on VH1 a few years back.

I think they're both magicians. I declare a tie.

[Note to self: Avoid making grand sweeping statements when (a) you really don't know what the fuck you're talking about 'cause you're the proud owner of a modest 20% of an artist's catalog; (b) you're forced to post in 10-second intervals at work; and (c) you're likely to be challenged by someone who DOES know what the fuck they're talking about. And anyways, that "American Girl" lick is pretty damned exhilarating indeed!]

I saw Steve Stevens play his guitar with a toy laser gun on VH1 and my mind was thoroughly blown.
