80s hits brought back to life

In the last few months, there was the "Valerie" endless loopfest, aka "Call On Me," and now the new(ish) "Say Say Say" remix, both doing/did well on the charts. What other 80s hit songs are prime for some remix treatment?

"Last few months" = two years ago.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 22:14 (twenty years ago)

i hate their version of that, but the artwork is fantastic!

If I had to have two 80s songs brought back to life by hi-NRG sample loops of the five best seconds of the song, "Valerie" and "Waiting for a Star to Fall" might've been the two I'd choose. You brits are smart ones.

Johnny Hates Jazz and When in Rome might work pretty well.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 22:37 (twenty years ago)

Johnny Hates Jazz's "Shattered Deams" has already been done! Heard it at the gym today for the first time.

Also heard in the last year or so: "Easy Lover" and "Out Of Touch".

alcazar, "this is the world we live in"

'Waiting For A Star To Fall'

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 22:48 (twenty years ago)

Shannon, "Let the Music Play" or Starpoint, "Object of My Desire"?

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 22:50 (twenty years ago)

I heard the Genesis one, I didn't know it was Alcazar.
Did I dream it or has someone given this treatment to Fleetwood Mac's "Little Lies" or "Everywhere"? "Big Love" would work well too.

This is such a weird trend. They all sound the same, I'm surprised they're actually done by different people. Maybe I should make one too before we run out of 80's hits.

has 'broken wings' been done yet?

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 23:02 (twenty years ago)

mylo used 'waiting for a star to fall' and 'bette davis eyes' for 'in my arms' (out in 2004). and miami sound machine for the 'dr pressure' thing. there's also been an awful remake of 'sweet child o mine' by flatpack. and i heard a mock & toof re-edit of 'like a virgin' recently.

jaime, Wednesday, 8 March 2006 23:05 (twenty years ago)

didn't you guys get "Waiting for a Star to Fall" three times in one year?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 23:15 (twenty years ago)

I have heard none of the songs mentioned here except for the Futureheads cover, and I want to hear them all!

Oh, there was that semi-reggae cover of "Break My Stride" by Blue Lagoon that came out last year...

T/S: Pinks/Oki Dog/Scoobys/Tail o' the Pup (Bent Over at the Arclight), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 23:23 (twenty years ago)

there was that ska version of "come on eileen."

Knute Rockne, All American (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 23:28 (twenty years ago)

Oh, god. The Save Ferris cover? Worst thing ever.

Didn't the Postal Service have a cover of a Phil Collins song recently? (the one that goes "Take a look at me now." I didn't like the cover, but it made me go back and listen to the original song, which made me realize I actually like the original song.

Yup. Infernal did a version, although it's not so much eurobeat as euromoody.

yesterday Kanye totally rocked Aha's 'Take On Me', complete with an appropriate Fresh Prince Carlton dance

rizzx (rizzx), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:27 (twenty years ago)

I heard a new one again at the gym this morning, "Africa" by Toto. They just loop the "It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you" line over and over.

I think I heard Level 42's "Something About You" done like that too last year.

LeRooLeRoo (Seb), Thursday, 9 March 2006 18:07 (twenty years ago)

The main prob I have with these remixes is that they take the great lines out of context. Like with "Call On Me"...the great thing about that line in the song is that the verses all lead up to it/build up to it, and it was always a high point in the song. When it's looped over and over, it loses its charm and excitement I guess, and the song becomes kind of flat.

musically (musically), Thursday, 9 March 2006 18:18 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I think "Call On Me" is the one that works the best. I understand what you're saying though, I kept wanting to hear the line "I'm the same boy I used to be". But repeating the loop so many times makes it become very euphoric.

My main problem with these remixes is that they completely lack originality. The first song I heard done like that was "So Much Love To Give" by DJ Falcon and Thomas Bangalter and I was blown away. Now these new ones are just cashing in on a good idea.
