Bands I am surprised to see ILM hate

Not that these bands deserve universal praise but I am surprised at the overwhelming voices of dissent heaped upon the following bands:

Nirvana
TV On The Radio
Jane's Addiction

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Thursday, 9 March 2006 12:04 (twenty years ago)

you can also call those:
bands that would never be popular if humans would start living at the age of 20.

shake basements, Thursday, 9 March 2006 12:18 (twenty years ago)

too cool for school

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 9 March 2006 12:29 (twenty years ago)

I still live at the age of 31 and can appreciate nirvana and janes addiction and completely adore tv on the radio.
so there

simon 803 (simon 803), Thursday, 9 March 2006 12:31 (twenty years ago)

Nirvana are well-liked.

TV on the Radio seem to have lots of threads about them.

Dunno about Janes.

All three of these bands I suspect you need to be quite into rock to really love. Some people on ILM aren't.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 9 March 2006 12:43 (twenty years ago)

too polish-sounded to be really liked.
though if they were polish-sounded bands influenced by music from poland - ilm would love them.

system works well, Thursday, 9 March 2006 12:49 (twenty years ago)

Jane's have been positively gushed over on here at times, which I have no problem with personally

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 9 March 2006 12:57 (twenty years ago)

I like Jane's (especially Ritual de lo Habitual ) a lot; pre-reformation, of course. Nirvana's fine with me, too, in doses. Never heard of TV on the Radio...

Joe (Joe), Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:00 (twenty years ago)

you can add red hot chilly peppers too.

certt, Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:01 (twenty years ago)

If anything I am amazed at the love for Jane's Addiction, but I think they are especially awful. Nirvana is okay, but it's not my impression that ILM is that overwhelmingly down on them.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:03 (twenty years ago)

1. They are all white
2. They play guitar
3. You can't dance to their music.

That is the reason for the ILM hate.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:05 (twenty years ago)

ilm likes to make fun of nirvana cuz they are fun to make fun of, but there are plenty of fans here. even i like nirvana. or the hits anyway. and the unplugged album. i have only heard tvotr's post-katrina song and i like that a bunch. and i like nothing's shocking. great zep rips on that thing.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:06 (twenty years ago)

4. They are all males.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:06 (twenty years ago)

they are too over-played.

der i, Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:07 (twenty years ago)

I can too dance to Jane's Addiction Geir - come over here and I'll PROVE it

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:08 (twenty years ago)

Geir, shut up.

Dan (Seriously) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:08 (twenty years ago)

(I say that out of love and concern.)

Dan (The Meds Aren't Working) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:08 (twenty years ago)

"been caught stealing" was a dance-hit in some clubs 10 years ago

der i, Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:09 (twenty years ago)

3. You can't dance to their music.

Maybe you can't Geir, plenty of others do.

dddddddddd, Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:18 (twenty years ago)

All three of these bands I suspect you need to be quite into rock to really love. Some people on ILM aren't.

Also Tom otm here.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:19 (twenty years ago)

I don't know that anyone would here would EVER describe me as being "quite into rock" and I love both Nirvana and Jane's Addiction.

Dan (Exception!) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:21 (twenty years ago)

but not TV On The Radio?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:25 (twenty years ago)

I don't know that anyone would here would EVER describe me as being "quite into rock" and I love both Nirvana and Jane's Addiction.

Ditto. Tom not OTM, as usual.

Merryweather (scarlet), Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:26 (twenty years ago)

Not real excited about anyu of them, but Nirvana and Janes Addiction can have their moments of being the right thing at the right time. Someday, I'll read a TV on the Radio thread and try to understand what all the fuss is about.

Dave will do (dave225.3), Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:31 (twenty years ago)

people always make the mistake of reading 2 or 3 individual but shared opinions here and calling it a hivemind community.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:33 (twenty years ago)

I think you're off base here, Brian. I've seen very little evidence that people hate Nirvana. Janes, sure, but I can't see why that's surprising.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:35 (twenty years ago)

[I like Janes but can see how Perry Ferrel annoys the fuck out of people]

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 9 March 2006 13:38 (twenty years ago)

I love Jane's, I like plenty of Nirvana songs, I've yet to be bothered to hear TVotR. If those bands seem to draw excessive amounts of bile its probably more to do with idiot fans or unreflective critics tickling people's backlash reflex.

Raw, Uncompromising, and Noodly (noodle vague), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:05 (twenty years ago)

I like how Geir's claim that these bands are undanceable is what gets debated when number one is factually false:

1. They are all white

TVOTR.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:28 (twenty years ago)

not to mention dave navarro.

Can we make that a theme for this thread please?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:29 (twenty years ago)

I've never heard of TVOTR.

I don't know why "not everyone likes them" seems to = "ilm hate".

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Wilco is the most hated ILM band that I've seen here. Followed closely by Ryan Adams.

Compared to those two, Nirvana and TV on the Radio are like Abba and Steely Dan in this strange ILM universe.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:36 (twenty years ago)

Are you saying Abba and Steely Dan are bad?!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:41 (twenty years ago)

Please don't forget the Kills. and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. And Feist. These ones really are horrible.

snowballing (snowballing), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:43 (twenty years ago)

but not TV On The Radio?

I've never heard them! Would I like them?

Dan (What Are They Like) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:52 (twenty years ago)

I think you would yes, although i only know a couple of tracks myself (Staring At The Sun v good).

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 9 March 2006 14:58 (twenty years ago)

Are they the best glazed band in showbiz or what?

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 9 March 2006 15:01 (twenty years ago)

I have to admit I wasn't familiar with TVOTR. The two others are very familiar to me though, and it is quite obvious that to the typical narrow minded dance/hip-hop/R&B fans at ILM, they are not what they are likely to like.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 9 March 2006 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Geir, do you a) believe what you're saying, b) say it to get a rise out of people, or c) live inside some kind of giant bong?

Raw, Uncompromising, and Noodly (noodle vague), Thursday, 9 March 2006 15:06 (twenty years ago)

I mean EXHIBIT A: This thread is full of people saying they like those fucking bands.

Raw, Uncompromising, and Noodly (noodle vague), Thursday, 9 March 2006 15:07 (twenty years ago)

"Wilco is the most hated ILM band that I've seen here"

wrong.they are great.search the threads again

deer hooh, Thursday, 9 March 2006 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Are you saying Abba and Steely Dan are bad?!

Easy big fella. I'm saying that they're probably the most revered bands on ILM, at least that I've seen.

Personally, I love Steely Dan. Abba's not my thing, but that doesn't mean they're bad.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Thursday, 9 March 2006 15:08 (twenty years ago)

x-post

bong! bong! bong!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 9 March 2006 15:09 (twenty years ago)

ILM hates Astral Weeks, a favorite of mine and generally acknowledged Sacred Cow. I am not sure what it is about this album that irritates The ILX0R.

Aaron A, Thursday, 9 March 2006 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Ha, no mob violence for you today then.

I think the most divided ILM opinion based on nationality is about CCR: Yanks love them, the English hate them (for the most part).

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 9 March 2006 15:12 (twenty years ago)

Babyshambles seem mostly hated.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 9 March 2006 15:12 (twenty years ago)

isn't the astral weeks hate more of an old-ilm thang? you know, all those abba fans that used to hang with geir on pre-war message boards.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 9 March 2006 15:15 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad that's not the only TVOTR song I've heard or I might hate them too...

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 9 March 2006 15:31 (twenty years ago)

it's the only one i've heard and i like it. not enough to buy an album or anything, but i thought it was cool when i first heard it.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 9 March 2006 15:33 (twenty years ago)

Thx for the link, Martian. I must confess, if that's representative it's hard to imagine anyone working up h8 for it unless they've got an obnoxious street team or something. I mean it's ok, but, er....

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 9 March 2006 15:35 (twenty years ago)

just listening to bauhaus she's in parties...i wonder if tv on the radio are fans of bauhaus

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 9 March 2006 16:23 (twenty years ago)

I like Nirvana. Janes are a little cloying. I don't know TV On The Radio.

The only rock music I listen to is Rammstein. And The Clash

Adamrl (nordicskilla), Thursday, 9 March 2006 16:26 (twenty years ago)

FWIW, I think Nirvana are fun to put down because they are widely held up as this sort of generation-defining watershed moment in the history of rock/pop, but after all is said and done, they remain still a pretty great band. Janes I can largely do without, and I've never listened to much TVOTR, though I probably should at some point.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 9 March 2006 16:28 (twenty years ago)

When I first started reading ILM about 2 years ago, I was surprised by all of the "corny indie fuxor" stuff. It kind of makes sense to me now, but I still don't really get why people get so worked up over Sufjan Stevens and his ilk.

darin (darin), Thursday, 9 March 2006 17:36 (twenty years ago)

I love Janes & Nirvana.
I have never actually heard TV On The Radio, I think.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Thursday, 9 March 2006 17:39 (twenty years ago)

i'm very interested to see what dan thinks of TVOTR. i could see it going either way.

I enjoy all three of those musical artistes.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 9 March 2006 17:54 (twenty years ago)

I think Nirvana is basically bland.

I like Jane's Addiction.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Thursday, 9 March 2006 18:29 (twenty years ago)

tv on the radio = unlistenable
nirvana = hilariously bad (and my god the lyrics)
jane's addiction = i have never heard them and am very happy with that

i do like some rock music, i like hole for instance. and i like the yeah yeah yeahs AND the kills!

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 9 March 2006 19:34 (twenty years ago)

2 sacred cows + 1 lame duck = an ilm barnyard of fun

harshaw (jube), Thursday, 9 March 2006 19:36 (twenty years ago)

ILM is mostly a bunch of white males who hate white males.

shookout (shookout), Thursday, 9 March 2006 20:02 (twenty years ago)

That's not true, I hate everyone.

tv on the radio = unlistenable

I wouldn't go that far but they were pure 'in one ear/out the other' stuff when I heard them. I seem to remember Chuck and I both going "Wait, people actually actively care about them?" on ILM at about the same time.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 March 2006 20:05 (twenty years ago)

TVotR's black though, right? xp

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 9 March 2006 20:05 (twenty years ago)

It seems odd that The Lex hasn't heard Jane's Addiction.

darin (darin), Thursday, 9 March 2006 20:30 (twenty years ago)

The bands that really don't deserve the ILM hate are Coldplay, Keane and Travis.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 9 March 2006 21:19 (twenty years ago)

It seems odd that The Lex hasn't heard Jane's Addiction.

No it isn't! This is the same person who hadn't heard of John Wayne!

(BTW, that song Martian linked is kind of awesome!)

Dan (Hermetically-Sealed Bubble) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 March 2006 21:26 (twenty years ago)

Dave Matthews Band is the most hated band here.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Thursday, 9 March 2006 21:38 (twenty years ago)

I think the DMB backlash backlash must be due.

Raw, Uncompromising, and Noodly (noodle vague), Thursday, 9 March 2006 21:42 (twenty years ago)

For Dan and anyone else interested:

You might enjoy this other TV on the Radio track, "Staring at the Sun". It's my favorite of theirs.

http://toolshedmedia05.com/ts/TVOTR-staring-at-the-sun.mp3

darin (darin), Thursday, 9 March 2006 21:47 (twenty years ago)

I endorse "Staring At The Sun."

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Thursday, 9 March 2006 23:51 (twenty years ago)

I don't get at all why so many people like Dave Mathews, and Coldplay sound like radiohead filtered and made safe to play on the stereo in the nation's Banana Republic stores. Nirvana and Jane's are ok by me, although I was more into Hole and Jesus Lizard at the time. never saw anyone hatin-on TVOTR, I liked the links though, thanks.

JB Young (JB Young), Friday, 10 March 2006 00:25 (twenty years ago)

Anyone who hates Jane's Addiction isn't worth listening to.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 March 2006 00:41 (twenty years ago)

..and I just hate TV on the Radio because of that guy's hair (which is also the reason why I hate Coheed & Cambria).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 10 March 2006 00:48 (twenty years ago)

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Friday, 10 March 2006 04:45 (twenty years ago)

The Wilco and U2 hate is also stupid. I can understand the hatred towards Americana, but Wilco have long since abandoned Americana and gone on the break sophisticated quality pop.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 10 March 2006 08:57 (twenty years ago)

Geir Geir Geir, only YOU would hate Americana. Also, Wilco is overrated guff.

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Friday, 10 March 2006 10:17 (twenty years ago)

I quite like Nirvana and TVOTR.

I also rather like Wilco.

I think my long established and deeply entrenched loathing of U2 has already been reasonably well established.

I also used to be a massive Killing Joke fan - to the extent that (around '80-'83) I actually had the words "Killing Joke" and the picture from the "Requiem" / "Change" 12" painted on the back of my leather jacket, and used to follow them from gig to gig around the country when they were on tour.

Unfortunately however, I am not worth listening to because I've both seen and heard Jane's Addiction, and I think they're utter pants.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 10 March 2006 10:44 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't go that far but they were pure 'in one ear/out the other' stuff when I heard them

i WISH they were in-one-ear etc! at the time i was actually pretty curious about them, they sounded interesting, but it was this one horrid discordant mess. actually, possibly i am thinking of the mars volta. i can't tell this indie crap apart.

Kaiser Chiefs are pretty unpopular here, especially among the British ILM-ers, though I don't think they are that bad, at least they should be in not the same category as Coldplay or Keane. These two bands deserve what they get here, but the Kaisers are not.

I HAVE SO MANY OF THEIR ALBUMS LAST 3 MONTHS...

My opinion, pop music is rediculous.I was at a Bon Jovi concert last month in Tampa, and it was by far the best concert Ive ever been to.They’re so real. And I envy them.Theres no better feeling in the world than being there listening to them perform live and knowing, that theyre doing it because thats what they love. They put all they have into it.And it shows.I can’t wait to go back! They seem to think of themselves as ordinary people just doing their job.

I never liked Jane's Addiction, but never cared to give them a fair chance. TV on the Radio are just forgettable, like a bunch of other boring indie-rock from the last few years.

Nirvana-hate is driven by familiarity, I think - I know I could do without ever hearing Nevermind or Unplugged again, but In Utero and Incesticide and Bleach all have great songs.

micarl,
There was a flood of awesome chick punk bands in the 90s inspired mainly by frightwig, hole, babes in toyland, L7... here is my favorite Hole lyric that predate kurt (maybe smashing pumpkins guy wrote these - kidding):

When I was a teenage whore
My mother asked me she said, baby what for?
I give you plenty, why do you want more?
Baby, why are you a teenage whore?
I said I feel so alone and i
I wish I could die
Seen the things you put me through and
I wish I could die

I was not so into the later stuff but I do like the new plastic surgery addict look Courtney sports these days.
