TS: Pebbles' "Mercedes Boy" vs "Girlfriend"

Two rather forgotten huge hits in 1988 by the subsequent manager of TLC. The former strikes me as one of the best L.A. Reid-Babyface productions: all slinky guitar, beat box, and Janet-esque understatement.

What say you?

"Girlfriend" did say the guy in question is just a "canine runnin' 'round in heeeaaaaat..."

Followed by a barking SFX.

Good times.

I shed not a tear for how utterly time-forgotten Pebbles is.

Gimme Cathy Denis or Michel'le or something.

So what is she up to nowadays?

"Mercedes Boy" by several lengths; it's just perfect.

Who's forgotten these songs?

Dan ("Mercedes Boy") Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 March 2006 19:58 (twenty years ago)

"Mercedes Boy" yes indeed--one of the greatest songs of its decade. Especially the remix: M-M-M-Merceeeedes...

Who's forgotten these songs?

I never hear'em on the radio! (then again, South Florida's urban stations have no sense of history).

"Giving You The Benefit" is pretty good too.

Yes, "Mercedes Boy." The gender flip is great: the title invites you to think it's about a boy who owns a Mercedes, and in general it's more usual to have a song where it's a man being skeevy about taking women for rides. But instead...dum dum dum.

Pebbles received exposure in 1987 when she appeared on the Beverly Hills Cop II soundtrack LP. Under the production of Andre Cymone, she sang "Love/Hate"; ...love this song.

nine months pass...

I love how fucking dramatic the synth strings are in "Grilfriend" but even moreso how she pronounces "question." "THAT IS THE QUESCHEEYON"

three years pass...

Just strutted the entire length of my commute from the train to work strutting in step with "Mercedes Boy."
