579 tracks.

All 32 of his albums.

10 out-of-print exclusive records.

1 previously unreleased album.

61 rare mono singles.

81 singles and rarities.

Cost? $189, because it's only available on iTunes. Not a bad price AT ALL. Can you imagine how much a physical copy would cost? I am still seriously considering purchasing this, even though I hate buying music online and I hate iTunes. But you got me now, iTunes, you finally got me.

I've seen a few things like this before, but this is pretty something I gotta admit. We'll be seeing tons more of it as well as the need for physical releases continues to collapse.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 March 2006 05:53 (twenty years ago)

i don't even like stevie wonder and i think that's pretty rad

team jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 10 March 2006 06:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm not seeing this in the music store... where is it?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 10 March 2006 07:02 (twenty years ago)

I hate 'check this out' threads with no link.

LINK!

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 10 March 2006 07:03 (twenty years ago)

It's on iTunes; finding links isn't the easiest thing in the world to do w/iTunes, y'know?

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Friday, 10 March 2006 07:13 (twenty years ago)

Actually no. I've never bought anything on iTunes, or even clicked the store button, except by accident.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 10 March 2006 07:15 (twenty years ago)

Search for "Complete Stevie Wonder" in the music store.

musically (musically), Friday, 10 March 2006 07:34 (twenty years ago)

Holy shit! This is fucking ridiculous. Can anyone tell which records are the unreleased/out of print ones?

regular roundups (Dave M), Friday, 10 March 2006 08:46 (twenty years ago)

wow, those six demo versions of conversation peace are a revelation!!

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 10 March 2006 08:56 (twenty years ago)

The Complete Stevie Wonder (iTunes link — right-click, 'Copy iTunes Store URL').

Mike W (caek), Friday, 10 March 2006 11:25 (twenty years ago)

By which I mean right-click and 'Copy iTunes Store URL' to generate such a link in future, not to follow the link in my post.

Mike W (caek), Friday, 10 March 2006 11:27 (twenty years ago)

can't they do one without 'SECRET LIFE OF PLANTS'
'IN SQUARE CIRCLE' 'CHARACTERS' and 'CONVERSATION PEACE' on and knock 50 quid off the price?

wow even 'Feeding Off the Love of the Land (B-Side)' is on it,
which was stupidly buried on the b side of some godawful song off the JUNGLE FEVER soundtrack.

piscesboy, Friday, 10 March 2006 11:43 (twenty years ago)

it would cost $640 ?
my three faves are 'CHARACTERS' 'JUNGLE FEVER ''IN SQUARE CIRCLE' but i agree "converstaion piece" was terrible with no singles on it and that one with prince and en vogue had no hook.

it's got you so - you don't know what you're do(wnload)ing, oh yeah , etc.

retrogurl, Friday, 10 March 2006 12:13 (twenty years ago)

does it have that jam he did with the sampler and the Cosby family?

"Baby.. Baby.."

"JamJamJam Jam-it-on-a-one"

"I don't-I don't know what to say what to say"

midi sanskrit (sanskrit), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:36 (twenty years ago)

wow, I totally might do this next time I have money to splurge. this isn't a limited time offer, is it?

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:39 (twenty years ago)

the only thing I don't like is that every track lists "The Complete Stevie Wonder" in the album field. if I got it, I'd probably end up doing what I did with the Steely Dan box set and going back and putting in the individual album titles.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:41 (twenty years ago)

OHHHH man!!! That's worth the price alone!

His duet with Claire Huxtable on "I Just Called To Say I Love You" shits all over the original.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:57 (twenty years ago)

tell me that's on youtube.

Knute Rockne, All American (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 10 March 2006 15:59 (twenty years ago)

funny, i remember watching that when it came out...

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 10 March 2006 16:28 (twenty years ago)

Kind of cool, but anyone can buy his 6 essential albums from 1971-80 for $60...and save hours of deleting time...

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 10 March 2006 17:33 (twenty years ago)

also this would be cooler if it weren't all in 128kpbs

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 March 2006 18:06 (twenty years ago)

If I'm going to pay $189 for some music I want to be able to hold it, man.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 10 March 2006 18:45 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki and Tracer Hand OTM

Annalea Rodriguez (Mama Roux), Friday, 10 March 2006 19:17 (twenty years ago)

You can hold your iPod.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 March 2006 19:17 (twenty years ago)

I bet you can buy his all his best CDs brand new for $60 or so. Is getting the extra/out-of-print/rare tracks and remaining post-70s crap worth three times that?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 10 March 2006 19:43 (twenty years ago)

I was tempted to just post "YSI?" but I feel I'd be banned.

Is the unreleased stuff worth it? I mean some of it looks interesting, but, y'know, I've already sunk probably $50-$100 into Stevie, and I'm not sure why I should keep doing that.

js (honestengine), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:51 (twenty years ago)

I guess the problem with unreleased stuff is that since it's unreleased it's hard to judge its quality. That said, it was released in 1963 so it'll be a Little Stevie Wonder kind of album.

And for those of you who say that things are unreleased for a reason...Motown could get kinda stupid about (not) releasing stuff. I have lots of "Motown Vaults"-type albums, and the stuff on them is superb. Especially Stevie Wonder's version of "I Hear A Symphony," btw, which I think is better than the Supremes version. I'll upload it if anyone wants to hear it. And one of David Ruffin's solo albums was just released in 2004 by Hip-O, and people say it's a masterpiece-OTM. It was shelved mainly because they didn't like him all that much as a person (not that Stevie had that problem) and because Motown simply had too many other good albums to release at the time. So who knows about this unreleased Stevie stuff!

musically (musically), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:16 (twenty years ago)

...yeah, but then there's the Shuggie Otis phenomenon, where people find something that was overlooked and suddenly it's a "classic" without being all that great...

js (honestengine), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:28 (twenty years ago)

If someone wants to YSI the 12" extended "Did I Hear You Say You Love Me" (which I only have on vinyl), I'd be thankful.

Already got one of this set's other selling points, though, in "Feeding Off the Love of the Land." And a lot of the original albums, et al.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:53 (twenty years ago)

At first I was all like, whoa this is an awesome idea. But then I realized that anybody even considering dropping $189 on Stevie Wonder music probably already has a good chunk of this stuff anyway. I guess its probably for people who either wake up one morning decided that they have to have the entire Stevie disco NOW, or rich people who don't have the time or motivation to digitize their collections.

jonviachicago, Friday, 10 March 2006 22:06 (twenty years ago)

see, I've only ever owned a couple Stevie albums, and never paid for any of them, so this is perfect for me. sometimes a huge catalog of great music is so intimidating you don't know where to start and put off buying anything, but getting all of it at once for a low price is pretty cool.
