the new N.E.R.D. vs. the old N.E.R.D. (or "the year of black rock? veron reid is turning over in his grave.")

to be fair, al asked this question on the original neptunes thread, but with that one already lost to the googlers, i figured it deserved a fair shake.

has anyone heard the new, "live" version of in search of.... i'm going to buy it anyway, of course, but i am curious as to others opinions. i thought the original was only about 2/3 successful, but the highlights were pretty damn high.

also, with the neps playing guitars, that mos def thing, greg tate's tribute-cum-pastiche funkadelic/70s miles project some critics (desperate for that next big thing?) are trumpteting 2002 already as the "year of black rock." was there ever a year where there were enough black people playing rock music to consider it a movement? (aside from, you know, the early days, before those crackers from england ruined everything.)

that should be vernon reid in the subject line, of course, rendering my hilarious joke useless.

I think Living Colour has reconvened. Cue the PR deluge.

I will not be satisfied with any YEAR OF BLACK ROCK poppycock until Oxbow gets some love.

And, no, I will not answer Jess' question.

OK, I will - 1924.

Hmmm... I like what I hear so far, but I suspect it's because it manages to sound like the Neptunes without using the percussion sounds that always give them away. So it's a rather refreshing side-step for now.... a step towards distinguishing themselves from the legions of pop/rap acts they're always producing.

In Search Of? I've cooled more on the first than when it came out, but I'm also keen to hear this new version. The low list price is welcome, too.

If they've found a way to get "Run to the Sun" to sound even better, I'm really going to want to hear this.

From what I've heard, only a severly beefed-up Rock Star has improved. Mind you, the songs on the original were so good that it will probably be impossible to ruin it.

Yeah, I only paid $7 for this. Are they trying to scare people off?
