people wot talk like written reviews - c/d

i find it embarrassing when people talk like this.

me and my s/o were talking to this music hack recently, and he basically did a review of the band stars during a conversation, over beers. it made me...uncomfortable.

i think this fits in with my "embarrassment talking about music in person" thread - i would hate to talk like a music review, which is why i like to avoid a lot of IRL music conversations.

do you ever talk like a written/published music review?

do you know anyone who does?

do you find it excruciating?

i know an (ex-)music hack who did this, excruciatingly.

i've probably done this a couple of times (but regretted it immediately after) :(

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:58 (twenty years ago)

People who verbally communifelinee like written reviews are almost as wholly unsatisfactory as people who write like the original poster in this redundant thread.

Ron Dennis, Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:11 (twenty years ago)

my ex-boss wrote or claimed to have written for the nme in the late '90s (i certainly couldn't remember who he was) but anyway he was a total cunt and spoke like this. his name was r0b3rt h3113r.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:12 (twenty years ago)

Ron Dennis?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:13 (twenty years ago)

Could you please give the given moniker of this journalist in words, not numbers? I cannot read numbers. Additionally, are you totally decided he was a "total cunt"? Did he look like a vagina? Did he perform the actions of a vagina?

Ron Dennis, Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:14 (twenty years ago)

It's to googleproof it, you t4rd.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:15 (twenty years ago)

DON'T FEED THE MORAN.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:16 (twenty years ago)

ron, when come back bring funnee.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Again, I cannot read numbers.

If you are "Googleproofing" your claim, then maybe you have a not inconsiderable amount to hide from the public. Maybe this man was not a "total cunt" after all and you are slandering him. Or maybe you are a "total cunt" too and if this man found the current discussion, he would inform the public of this, possibly in conjunction with evidence.

Ron Dennis, Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:18 (twenty years ago)

ron = marcello?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:18 (twenty years ago)

His name rings a bell. Did he do dance reviews mainly?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:19 (twenty years ago)

probably yeah.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:19 (twenty years ago)

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:20 (twenty years ago)

so wait, are you talking about the ron heller who writes for playlouder?
or am i not reading this correctly?

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:33 (twenty years ago)

oops looks like i got it wrong.
maybe it's ROBERT HELLER who writes for playlouder?

noe?

hmmm

Robert Heller @ PlayLouder?

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:34 (twenty years ago)

ron = marcello?

no. i could out them but reactions would be just shrug/indifference probably.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:36 (twenty years ago)

anyhoo it doesn't really matter because, like me, he shares a nname with someone a lot more famous.

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:38 (twenty years ago)

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 14:39 (twenty years ago)

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 20:16 (twenty years ago)

i can't even write like written reviews, god knows i can't speak that way.

deeeej, Wednesday, 15 March 2006 20:28 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

journalists talk like this. this guy who i know is training to be one and the other day someone asked him just who bob geldof was (hes from france) and this trainee guy included the phrase 'he shot to prominence' in his explanation. then the other day i was chatting to him about toryism and maybe thinking we were on newsnight he went off on one about 'the evasive individualism which thatcher promulgated'. wtf.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Saturday, 27 December 2008 11:11 (seventeen years ago)

Did he also make sweeping and unsubstantiated claims based on highly flimsy evidence? Some journalists do that too

da cryypiä (DJ Mencap), Saturday, 27 December 2008 17:23 (seventeen years ago)

i like how "journalists talk like this" because one guy that titchy knows who isn't even a journalist talks like that.

what U cry 4 (jim), Saturday, 27 December 2008 18:35 (seventeen years ago)

i'm a huge fucking dork so i'm sure i do this all the time to my friends

winston, Sunday, 28 December 2008 00:15 (seventeen years ago)

on the plus side, i don't actually write about music (or read much music journalism) so it must just come from my drunken dork heart

winston, Sunday, 28 December 2008 00:17 (seventeen years ago)

the real stupidity here is using phrases like "he shot to prominence" either when speaking or in text. I mean, ideally there shouldn't be any difference in how a writer writes and how he/she speaks, apart from the fact that writing may involve discussing specific things in a detail that demands unusual words or more words.

Local Garda, Sunday, 28 December 2008 00:21 (seventeen years ago)

I hate when I do this and I'm sure the people around me that occasionally have to listen to it hate it even more.

The Reverend, Sunday, 28 December 2008 00:28 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i guess i was actually more referring to just spewing pretentious unnecessarily flowery prose to describe a song/artist...
stuff like "he shot to prominence", "after cutting her teeth in (band)...".. that's more like one-sheet promo talk or something i guess..

winston, Sunday, 28 December 2008 00:29 (seventeen years ago)

shot to prominence in journalism doesnt really seem like a BAD overused cliche -- overused cliche sure but reading it in a newspaper doesnt really grate or anything

choom gangsta (deej), Sunday, 28 December 2008 00:33 (seventeen years ago)

i mean some things are just classic turns of phrase here

choom gangsta (deej), Sunday, 28 December 2008 00:33 (seventeen years ago)

right, but when people actually speak them, it just sounds completely wrong/unnatural

winston, Sunday, 28 December 2008 00:37 (seventeen years ago)

just the whole divide between phrases whose meaning is better understood on paper versus better understood spoken

winston, Sunday, 28 December 2008 00:39 (seventeen years ago)

I still think it's just that these phrases are pretty poor. "Shot to prominence" is one of those prefabs. I mean, why say it at all? Instead of just saying "formed band x with friends in 1983 and released record y a year later" or whatever.

I actually kind of enjoy overblown clichés but sort of as a joke as I get older. I love writing wikipedia entries in a ridiculously wordy style.

Local Garda, Sunday, 28 December 2008 00:48 (seventeen years ago)

"i like how "journalists talk like this" because one guy that titchy knows who isn't even a journalist talks like that."

yawn. its quite a common thing with journalists actually.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Sunday, 28 December 2008 12:35 (seventeen years ago)

yawnh
