Shakespears Sister: "Hormonally Yours"

I'd totally forgot the whole this band even existed, but I recently spotted "Hormonally Yours" in of a bargain bin and bought it, and I've been enjoying it immensely. Catchy dream-pop with a bit of a hippie tinge, it never quite falls into Enya territory, not that there's anything wrong with that. The production isn't experimental or anything but it's filled with lots of lovely sonic details, though I guess they own some to Eurythmics, and the other singer, the one who isn't Marcella Detroit (her name escapes me right now), does occasionally imitate Annie Lennox a bit too clearly. Aside from that it's a great LP, though very early nineties - but I guess there's bound to be a revival sooner or later.

I think I'm going to spin this at my next DJ gig. What say you?

The one who isn't Marcella Detroit is Siobhan Fahey from Bananarama! I still like that record a lot.

Do I remember correctly that there were accusations of satanism or something like that because of the video for "Stay"? That in the video Detroit was Satan coming to claim Fahey's boyfriend? It's been over ten years since I saw it, so my memory's kinda unclear.

I can't remember the last time I heard "Stay" on the radio.

I think "I Don't Care" surpasses "Stay" as a clever pop single, even though their Eurythmics debt is even clearer there.

I play this CD
as bed-time music for my
daughter all the time

I really love the last song on the record, was it released as a single or does it sound familiar for some other reason?

The one that isn't Marcella Detroit is indeed Siobhan Fahey from the original Bananarama line-up and she was married to Dave Stewart (who co-produced the first two albums, which might explain some similarities). The very dificult 3rd album (sans Marcella, who was technically speaking a session musician in Shakespears Sister) was finally officially released a couple of years ago and it's very different from the Sacred Heart and Hormonally Yours. Last December a compilation of rarities and unreleased material also was put out on a CD. Both Siobhan and Marcella put out solo stuff up to this date. Siobhan's current stuff is very electro.

seven years pass...

As I mentioned on the old fogey thread, this was among the first 3 albums I ever bought on compact disc. Listening to it right now for the first time in eons, and I had no memory of "I Don't Care" being such a Pretenders homage (to an extent).

Also, "Stay" is still awesome.
