Not a replacement for the 3-disc Salsoul comp, but it covers a lot of classics (Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Heartbeat, Don't Make Me Wait, etc.), and has the Talking Heads mix, the first time I've seen it on CD.

Looks great! The Patrice Rushen is a personal favorite o' mine.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 17 March 2006 03:50 (twenty years ago)

Cool! I can't wait to get this. I've got some of these but not all, and this looks like a great suite of music. (No Ednah Holt or Loose Joints, though . . . maybe they figure everybody has the West End comp.)

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 17 March 2006 05:07 (twenty years ago)

Hmmmm, I think I still have the Peech Boys and Taana Gardner on vinyl somewhere.

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Friday, 17 March 2006 16:02 (twenty years ago)

What does Levan do to the Talking Heads track?

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 17 March 2006 16:03 (twenty years ago)

dunno, I have a really great Masters At Work remix of it.

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 17 March 2006 16:05 (twenty years ago)

Levan merely spun some of the tracks on the comp (what, no Benatar?).

Andy_K (Andy_K), Friday, 17 March 2006 16:12 (twenty years ago)

well, it says mixes above, so i assume these are remixes or edits?

They're contemplations.

(I'm reading Shapiro's disco book right now, oddly enough, so this is a fortuitous announcement.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 March 2006 16:21 (twenty years ago)

looks like your right, i'm guessing they float some of his work in there, namely the peech boys and the taana gardner

three weeks pass...
I just picked this up today and it's fantastic. It's especially thrilling for me since I have never heard Heartbeat and Don't Make Me Wait before. Works well as a starting point and a primer of Levan's best work.

Heartbeat's been sampled 1,000,001 times so you're heard the bassline before no doubt

Washable School Paste (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 20:10 (twenty years ago)

i wish i could replicate the feeling i had when i heard 'heartbeat' for the first time. i almost lost it. i was like 'my god what is this perfect music'

i should get this comp.

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 20:16 (twenty years ago)

If you've never heard "Heartbeat," go for all the spin-offs too: Sweet G's "Heartbeat Rap," D'Bora's "No Sense" and... damn, I know there's some others. Ini Kamoze's "Hotstepper"...

aack xpost

Kenny Nix also did some similar ones: Inez Brooks' "Chillin' Out" and Ednah Holt's "Serious Sirius Space Party."

treacherous three dude!

I'm revoking your MPC license.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 20:35 (twenty years ago)

Nile Rodger's remix of Lost in Music is incredible! ( Sorry, just kinda talking to myself here.)

Thanks for all the Heartbeat spin-off recommendations, guys.

Jeff K (jeff k), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 20:45 (twenty years ago)

Yes, this is actually really great and makes a really nice set with Live at the Paradise Garage (in the sense that there's almost no overlap... just the Janice McSmack Dab track). It's also sort of cool that it's split down the middle between Levan's mixes/productions and stuff he just thought was great.
