Neil Morrissey's cartoon alter-ego versus Damon Albarn's cartoon alter-ego.

Come to think of it, this would have made a great Duel wouldn't it? Maybe Bob The Builder would have ended up trouncing all comers! One to consider if you're going to do some pop Duels, Tom.

Could someone summarise why IL* seems SO very antagonistic to Gorillaz. OK, so I understand people resenting Mr Allbran, but it does seem like extreme hatred for a pop act. I like the cartoons (and Hewlett of course) and I like Mr the Automator's work. Is the music that awful? Or is it just the Nathan Barley aura that the whole concept exudes?

Bob is a cert for pop Duel! nomination. Somebody apart from me is going to have to write the blurbs though because I like Bob. The fast mix of Clint Eastwood is the best thing Gorillaz have done and I don't like it as much as "Can We Fix It?".

(I am not an objective witness here - my girlfriend works with nursery-age kids and in that environment you either submit your brain to the power of Bob or go mad. Some of that has rubbed off on me.)

alan, its a whole raft of things i guess, but to answer two things. 1) its not really very nathan barley at all, although maybe it would like to be?, 2) i don't like dan the automator much anyway. theres just something icky about the whole thing

I can't stand Jamie Hewlett's stuff and was horrified at his new pop prominence. The beats do nothing for me. Albarn is his usual self - he knows his way around a pop song but here the hooks don't catch me. The 'streetwise' cartoon personae and 'punky' interviews are just wretched, too. Made-up characters who have given better interviews than Gorillaz: Roland Rat, Zenith, Zig and Zag, no doubt hundreds more.

BOB is BOB

BOB is BOB, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Agreed the fast version of "Clint Eastwood" is far superior (is 2- step, duh, but then so is "Can We Fix It?" actually), but trying to explain exactly why this is is surprisingly difficult for me. It's not just that Del is replaced by Sweetie Irie... what is it about the Gorillaz project that it's list of musical sources and influences can result in great 2-step but fails so consummately in this case?

tom what did you think of the jamie hewlett issue of doom patrol?

ethan, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Was that the second brotherhood of Dada one? It was OK - I get the feling Grant M is quite a hands-on scripter when it comes to how a comic should look - but Richard Case was better than anyone. I'd forgotten Hewlett did one actually - when I think of him I think of Senseless Things single sleeves first! Thinking about it he owes a lot to Brendan McCarthy who I loads prefer - a Brendan McCarthy Gorillaz would have been much cooler and looked less like a duff skatewear ad.
