I know you've all got 100's of cd's and records but who have you managed to miss on your travels?

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A Krautrock double whammy, Can and Neu! Even after reading Krautrocksampler.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

roxy music. omni trio

gareth, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

gareth, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and of course, arovane!

gareth, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bill - get Neu75 now!!

I haven't heard lots of hip hip - Jay Z, NWA, Public Enemy... oh look just name them, I won't have heard them.

There's lots of new-ish American stuff that I haven't heard - No Doubt/Blink 182/Hootie/Blind Melon - but they're not exactly critical darlings are they?

I've only heard about 30 seconds of the Grateful Dead as far as I know. I've never heard Jewel, Melissa Etheridge, Ani Di Franco and loads of other birds with guitars. I'm proud of this.

I have never heard Phish, nor must I.

From the post-punk era I don't think I've ever heard PragVEC or Sudden Sway. I ought to put this right.

Dr. C, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hip-hip = hip-hop. hurray.

Dr. C, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I got Uncut yesterday and there was a long, praise-filled article in there about a band called "the sound" I had never heard of them at all, I fear that I should have, but no.

chris, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Comus (only a Current 93 cover and a few snippets) Anima Sound, the No New York comp (although I have a DNA live album which is decent) Harry Partch, and Fela Kuti spring immediately to mind.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris, check your Uncut CD - The Sound are featured!

DJ Martian, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Good thinking Martian!

chris, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dr. C's response suggests that he has in fact heard everything. He's scraping the barrel a bit, no?

N., Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gram Parsons

Leigh, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the Strokes.

Dare, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

velvet underground.

i'm sure if i gave a shit i'd listen to them.

Wyndham Earl, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Peaches, Moldy Peaches, White Stripes, Four Tet, Mogwai, Miss Kittin...

Nothing I've heard/read gives me any reason to want to change this.

Jacob, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

jennifer love hewitt, david hasslehoff

Queen G, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

none of those mouse bands. no fieldmice, mice on mars or modest mice.

minna, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Scooter

Tom, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Most classical. Here's something I bet most of you have missed : Dave Cloud "Songs I Will Always Sing". Find it. -jeff

mxyzptlk, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Here was a similar question for those interested. I have since heard Fugazi, by the way, I just borrowed their new album a couple of days ago. I like one song a lot ("Full Disclosure") but so far it's not my thing. Might take a few listens to sink in, though. Which one of the two lead singers sounds like John Lydon?

Mark, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Henry Cow, The Passage, Clock DVA (apart from one track).

DJ Martian, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth, how have you managed to not hear Omni Trio??? That's MAD impressive!

Up until last week, I hadn't heard Andrew WK. I also haven't heard The White Stripes, but I've seen their album.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not nearly as impressive as never having heard any Roxy Music - not even Dance Away or Jealous Guy on Capital Gold's Better Music Mix approximately 18 times a day!

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Black Flag. I am sure I will one day bump into them.

Nathalie, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't heard any Omni Trio either and as for Dave Cloud???? Who he? Is he really a 'critical darling'?

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark: neither of them.

Col, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I've heard only "Sunday Morning" in full, and that's it by the VU. I don't think I've ever heard a Roxy Music song although I've heard 10000 Maniacs's "More Than This" and that was their song, right?. Hmmm, who else? Television and Can, I think.

Vinnie, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Any Clash or Pistols albums.

dan, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not all these are necessarily critic's darlings but:

Never knowingly heard anything at all by:

"Be My Baby," "What's Going On?", The Go-Betweens, Aztec Camera, The Feelies, Big Star, Cannibal Ox, Prefuse 73, Nas, The Beatnuts, Alicia Keys, DNA, The Stone Roses, The Happy Mondays, The Chameleons, Can, Cluster, Amon Duul, Heroin, Angelhair, Antioch Arrow, The Beta Band, Death, AMM, Keith Rowe, Fred Frith outside of Henry Cow, James Taylor, Barry Manilow, Serge Gainsbourg, Smog, The Clientele, "I Feel Love", Engelbert Humperdinck, Royal Trux, Run On, No New York, UGK

an entire track by:

Belle and Sebastian, The Fall pre-Shift Work, Slipknot, The Wedding Present, Suede, Morton Feldman, Spacemen 3, Ride, Neu, Jan Jelinek, Superchunk, Pussy Galore, Throwing Muses or Kirsten Hersh, Philip Jeck

More than one track in its entirety by:

Roxy Music, T Rex, The Manic Street Preachers, The MC5, Faust (except for the Tony Conrad collaboration), Spiritualized, Stereolab, Boney M, Blue Cheer, The Dandy Warhols, The X-Ray Spex, Chic, Arvo Part, The Human League, Mudhoney, Pere Ubu, Sofia Gubaidulina, Celtic Frost, Phish

More than a few tracks by:

Blur, Gorecki, Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh, any soul artist, any popular musician from the 50s (except I've heard a Chuck Berry greatest hits album), any country artist, The Minutemen, Black Flag post-The First Four Years, Run DMC, Slayer, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, Godspeed You Black Emperor, any black metal band except Cradle of Filth, The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Love

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Would you consider Phil Jeck a critical darling? Well, he does have those pinchable cheeks ..

Dare, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i've yet to hear momus. they seem to be an ILM fav.

Brock K., Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I said not all of them were necessarily critic's darlings. In Jeck's case, for example, it's more just that he's someone who seems do be doing important stuff in an area of interest to me.

an entire track by:

Jay-Z, Broadcast, the United States of America, Talk Talk

more than a few tracks by:

any Elephant 6 band

an honest-to-goodness studio album by:

Cream

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

more than one track by Momus

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sundar, don't worry No New York is crap. ;-)

nathalie, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You're probably joking, but I really do think No New York is crap. I'm long, long past listening to records that don't give me pleasure. I love saying this, since it's now a $100 collector's item, but I threw mine out.

I've never heard Momus; I imagine him to sound like the guy from the Divine Comedy. Am I right?

I've never most of the electronic stuff talked about here. Since nobody shuts up about the Boards of Cananda, I bought their first one, and it's pretty good. I'm actually using ILM as a music guide more than any other media source these days.

Sean, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never heard Momus; I imagine him to sound like the guy from the Divine Comedy. Am I right?
No way. What I have heard of him (some tracks from "Stars Forever" and a song which is about his penis) is more like sprechgesang. His voice isn't as smooth as Neil Hannon's. His lyrics are quite odd but good.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Minna (shouting way upthread), add Mice Parade to your unheard mouse bands.

Curt, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Haven't heard a thing on Kompakt ... any suggestions there? That Markus Gunter guy gets lots of praise ... any others stand out? One more question -- the collection Pop Ambient -- is it really pop? Does it have vocals?

I'll Never Tell........, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Greil Marcus. Lester Bangs. (Never heard or read either of 'em.)

Dave225, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe some people (sundar) should say what they HAVE heard instead...

g, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Never heard Belle and Sebastien, nothing at all.

I've heard nothing by too many other darlings to mention.

Ronan, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the collection Pop Ambient -- is it really pop? Does it have vocals?

Not really. That would be more like the Teil 1 compilation on a Kompakt affiated label.

Curt, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe some people (sundar) should say what they HAVE heard instead...

Led Zeppelin. I like the fourth album best.

(Barely heard Elvis Costello too, BTW.)

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I have no idea who the 'critical darlings' are, but here are some bands I haven't heard, but want to: EAR, Tall Dwarfs, Negativland (this one the most), Oval, Space Negros, Ut, Laraaji, Swell Maps, Pearls before Swine, Godz, Shonen Knife, Salif Keita, King Tubby, Mad Professor, Eugene Chadbourne, Jim O'Rourke, Biff Rose, Cabbagehead, Buckethead, Tackhead, gong, Shady, Happy Flowers, Nirvana(from the 60s), Cybotron.

A Nairn, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And all those people who haven't heard any Roxy Music, Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, Velvet Undergorund. Go buy their cds!

A Nairn, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think I've ever heard Steps. Are they critical darlings or just Tom's? Their record covers look fascistic.

Curt, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Am I not a critic? Do I not bleed? Um OK no Steps are not really critical darlings and they're not really my darlings either. I suspect the Five greatest hits is better, ABBA Gold surely is.

Tom, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what makes you so sure i haven't heard mice parade, curt? actually, you're right. i haven't even heard of them. but i have heard the mouseketeers.

minna, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nigel Mansell

Sonicred, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lee Scratch Perry

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bernhard Gunter. Ho ho.

Bob Zemko, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't own much on Kompakt, but Total 3 (a compilation) is great, as I'm sure others will testify. As far as I know, there aren't many single-artist CD releases on the label thus far, and I'm looking forward to some of the artists on Total 3 releasing solo records. I don't have the budget to drop ten bucks on a 12" single!

Clarke B., Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A lot of Nineties bands, unfortunitly, since I pretty much stopped buying records for a decade after I married my husband in 1992. I'm not going to make a list for fear of sounding even more pathetic than I already am. I'm trying to catch up now.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I pretty much stopped buying records for a decade after I married my husband in 1992.

I'm sure you had your reasons, but I have this bizarre image of him forbidding you to buy music or something. Which I'm sure wasn't the case!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Now that I think about it, I think I've actually heard an entire Dino Jr album in someone's car. (It sucked). And they had a bunch of songs in The Year Punk Broke. I have a Talk Talk song on a mix tape somewhere too. (It sucks.) I've heard some Can in the background at a cafe.

And just in case I missed someone's favourite band the first couple times around:

Nothing at all:

The Telescopes, Sparks, Turbonegro, Anal Babes, Gluecifer, The Divine Comedy, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Flipper, The Au Pairs, The Dead Boys, The New York Dolls, Bathory, Fad Gadget, Lotion, Eugene Chadbourne, Steps, Jessica Simpson, Aldo Nova, Del the Funky Homosapien, Kool Keith, Stereophonics, Travis, Dilated Peoples, People Under the Stairs, Robyn Hitchcock, Fairport Convention

Not an entire track:

The Raincoats, The Damned, Orff, Yngwie Malmsteem, Derek Bailey, Leonard Cohen pre-80s, John Fahey, Lil' Kim, any Dirty South other than Outkast and Goodie Mob, Mobb Deep, Mos Def

No more than one track in its entirety:

The Cramps, The Strokes, Venom, Kardinal Offishall, The Misfits (As in Glenn Danzig's band. I heard stuff by Jem's enemies.), Vanilla Fudge

No more than a few tracks in their entirety:

Jane's Addiction, Devo, Kiss, Cheap Trick (might come to 7 songs if you include 80s comeback stuff), Alice Cooper (maybe 10 songs ditto), DOA, NoMeansNo, Fleetwood Mac, ELO, Gang of Four, Germs, Fear, X pre- Under the Big Black Sun (which sucks), Slowdive, The Plasmatics, Suicide, ELP, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, probably any given synthpop artist except New Order and the Magnetic Fields, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Jurassic 5, Motorhead, Tricky, Massive Attack, The Yardbirds (maybe 6 or 7 songs tops)

Not an honest-to-goodness full-length studio album:

Husker Du, The Beach Boys, Pierre Schaeffer

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

to my knowledge never heard any Xenakis, Canned Heat, Death Cab for Cutie, Oblivians, Uresei Yatsura, Mick Harvey, Lamb, Residents, Godz.

must be many many many more.

elizabeth anne marjorie, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the words "critical darlings" are being missed a few times here..

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I pretty much stopped buying records for a decade after I married my husband in 1992.

I can relate. I pretty much stopped buying records after I got my computer in 1989. Seriously, Christine, if I had tried to answer this question five years ago, I would have shown you pathetic.

Curt, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I still haven't read "Gravity's Rainbow".

geeta, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I remember a discussion like this on a book-related group once, where people were saying things like "I must confess, I've never read The Gulag Archipelago" and "I never made it all the way through Finnegans Wake." Like, who HAS?

Justyn Dillingham, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a total hip-hop illiterate. Don't even know if Timbaland is hip- hop or whatever. Have never heard De La Soul neither. Emo is a terra incognita as well. I heard maybe one track by Fugazi and two or three by the Dismemberment Plan. I don't remember ever having heard anything by Henry Cow. Slayer nada as well. The whole metal genre I completely missed out except some AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Motörhead, NIN and Ministry. No memory of Hank Williams, he is overrated anyway, isn't he? No Flying Burrito Brothers and Uncle Tupelo neither.

alex in mainhattan, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Forgot Jay-Z and Basement Jaxx or how where they called?

alex in mainhattan, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hank Williams, he is overrated anyway, isn't he?

Junior and III maybe, but Senior is justly rated high. Give him a listen before you decide.

fritz, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Here's my list from last time we did this (January). Still not heard any of these:

Pet Sounds
The Stooges
MC5
The vast majority of Stax singles
The Nirvana (studio) LPs
Every Pulp LP
Every Jay-Z recording ever 'cept that one that samples "Annie"

and let's add:
Momus, 2Pac & Biggy, Can, Amon Duul 1&2, Black Sabbath (save for "Paranoid"), Spacemen 3 (again, save for 1 song), Johnny Cash (save for about 3 songs maybe) and Ryan Adams. I have one Hank Williams tune on a compilation CD, but that's all of him I've heard. (Country and alt. country in general I've mostly avoided thus far).

I've also never heard anything by half the people who've so far featured in DUEL! 2002. Hasn't stopped me voting tho' - tee hee.

Jeff W, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sundar you're missing out on some good stuff. aldo nova, ELO, etc. I guess yr not one of us eclectics

g, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I tried to pair the list down to 'critical darlings', but may have slipped on a few. Faust
Kraftwerk
Eno's solo stuff
Roxy Music
Massive Attack
X
Liquid, Liquid
Aztec Camera
Royal Trux
Pere Ubu
Human League
Cabaret Voltaire
Magazine
Teardrop Explodes
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
P.I.L.
Violent Femmes
Beat Happening
Lush
Slint
Jawbox
Big Black
Minor Threat
Pavement
Tortoise
Lambchop
Sly & the Family Stone
Ween
Trashcan Sinatras
A hell of amount of dance/electronica/techno..etc...
A LOT of jazz/funk/hip-hop

JC, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You have a very exciting exposure period ahead of you, then. ;-)

Clarke B., Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
