mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 09:35 (twenty years ago)

Tell MES that Morrissey likes him now. He'd appreciate that.

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 09:43 (twenty years ago)

MES to Morrissey, sometime mid eighties, NME reception (passing through): "Good Morning, Steven!"

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 09:45 (twenty years ago)

Cue shocked and horrified Morrissey.

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 09:47 (twenty years ago)

The Fall live shows are not as good as they used to be.enjoy.

sam puller, Tuesday, 21 March 2006 09:52 (twenty years ago)

Lat time I went tssf, it was the "Extricate" tour, and a fine evening it was.

I think I also saw them at Reading Festival (vaguely remember him swinging a boot at a roadie onstage), but that wasnt going out tssf specifically.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 09:56 (twenty years ago)

According to a review last week, they're on good form but MES finished the gig after only about 30 mins or something. Probably had to rush off to read the midweek footie scores or something.

Anyhow FWIW, the Fall are subjects of the Primer feature in the new issue of the Wire. Obviously it'll all be old hat to most of you, but there you go. Stewart Lee wrote it. Haven't read it yet though, so might be total bullshit.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 10:10 (twenty years ago)

...or something.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 10:11 (twenty years ago)

1987 was a good year for Fall shows. Walthamstow Town Hall and Astoria were excellent.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 13:14 (twenty years ago)

i saw The Fall in a packed unairconditioned club, crowd is sweating like mad in sauna-like conditions. MES walks onstage in a heavy leather blazer and managed to keep it on for at least the first half hour, don't know how.

meth lab for doug flutie (sanskrit), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 14:45 (twenty years ago)

I saw the Fall the night that N1g3l Fooking K3nn3dy was on This Is Your Life with Brix in tow. I'm told Mark wasn't in great shape pre-gig, but they still chugged like fuck.

Why does the birds always shitting on me? (noodle vague), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 15:29 (twenty years ago)

I'm not going to see The Fall on Thursday!

sold out! what were the chances?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 14:04 (twenty years ago)

I was expecting a ticket to Thursday's performance. I was very dissappointed. It was the government's fault. It was the fault of the government.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 14:15 (twenty years ago)

too right it was!

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 14:49 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
just got tix to see them on Tuesday, first date on the US leg of the tour. I'm thinking MES is like God of Cookery.

patita (patita), Friday, 28 April 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

I got my tickets to see them on Thursday, May 4th.

Harpal (harpal), Friday, 28 April 2006 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

They cancelled in Seattle, so I figured the whole thing was cancelled.

Obviously too lazy to check the Fall site (Bimble...), Friday, 28 April 2006 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

Crossing my fingers that the Pomona gig is still a go...

LOL Thomas (Chris Barrus), Friday, 28 April 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

Shit! It's already nearly May!

It's gonna be Tuesday here, and I don't have tickets yet. Hope it ain't sold out yet.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 28 April 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

The Fall is playing Mpls in May! Excited! my friend's band is opening and he's a huge fan, so it should be a fun evening.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 28 April 2006 22:26 (nineteen years ago)

Crossing my fingers that the Pomona gig is still a go..

I'm with ya there. They're still on the Glasshouse calendar.

van igloo (van smack), Friday, 28 April 2006 23:40 (nineteen years ago)

p@reene (Pareene), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 00:30 (nineteen years ago)

i picked up a dirty banana peel ran onto the stage and threw it in his face as hard as i could and walked away he ran after me with some 1800's English boxing hands and wanted to fight i laughed and walked away knowing in my head this man has only a few years left..

Somehow, I don't think this Peel session will be released anytime soon.

van igloo (van smack), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 00:38 (nineteen years ago)

Hahaha...southpaw show? WTF?

the only other time i've seen them was in a virgin megastore, so...

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 00:40 (nineteen years ago)

"I feel like he goes to brush his teeth in the morning..."

WRONG!

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 00:41 (nineteen years ago)

x-post:

nice one, van igloo!

that's so taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 01:01 (nineteen years ago)

i saw em the other night! pretty good! i didn't know any of the (new) songs but all fall songs sound more or less the same anyway so it didn't matter too much. they did two encores, which kinda floored me.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 01:17 (nineteen years ago)

fuck justin williams and his shitty shitty band ... who i havent heard

hjksfd, Tuesday, 9 May 2006 01:50 (nineteen years ago)

yer, but if he personally hadn't asked them to come, they wouldn't have played even that much!

What?????

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 06:39 (nineteen years ago)

remind me a year from now, when I'm a huge The Talk fan, how much I don't give a shit about The Talk.

Somebody bring along one of those old Manchester City inflatable bananas to the next gig!

Bring Me The Head of ESTEBAN BUTTEZ (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

Wheee!

The Official Fall site has confirmed that Ben, Spencer and Steve have quit the US tour and are returning to the UK. The Fall tour will continue with members of Chicago's Cairo Gang filling in

LOL Thomas (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 13:19 (nineteen years ago)

So, anybody heard the Cairo Gang?

TRG (TRG), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

We should start a betting pool on which dates will be actually played.

Southpaw's a long shot, Knitting Factory might be MES and yr granny on bongos.

Edward III (edward iii), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

.. especially if it's a knitting factory.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

The only part that is surprising is that he found a banana peel and didn't just use a bottle.

patita (patita), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

This is from the Chicago Reader regarding the wunderkind behind the Cairo Gang.

The Continuing Adventures of Emmett Kelly
Local guitar wunderkind Emmett Kelly, profiled in the Meter in January, continues to keep exceptional company. He spent most of the past four months on the road backing Beth Orton, and this winter he was part of the studio band on Then the Letting Go, the forthcoming disc from Bonnie "Prince" Billy, aka Will Oldham. (Due from Drag City on September 19, it'll be preceded by the single "Cursed Sleep" on July 25.) The disc was recorded in Iceland by Bjork collaborator Valgeir Sigurdsson; the band also included Jim White of the Dirty Three on drums, Oldham's brother Paul on bass, and Dawn McCarthy from Faun Fables on vocals. It's still not clear if Kelly will accompany Oldham on tour this fall, but in the meantime his own project the Cairo Gang will be doing some road work in support of its self-titled debut -- originally scheduled for an April release, it comes out on Narnack in July. The Cairo Gang has also landed a plum gig opening for the Fall on May 30 at the Logan Square Auditorium.

kwhitehead (stephen schmidt), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

.. especially if it's a knitting factory.
-- mark grout (mark.grou...), May 9th, 2006 10:48 AM.

Octogenarian slaves-ah do mah bidding
In this sweatshop-ah of alarming knitting!
Bongo fury never sounded this off the rails
and I swear! The barman's got a prehensile tail!

Edward III (edward iii), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

The Cairo Gang has already been sacked. Latest word is
Tim Presley - guitar (Darker My Love)
Rob Barbato - bass (ibid)
Orpheo McCord - drums (On the Hill)

- stefan (- stefan), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

Poor old Cairo Gang. Is that a new record sacking for The Fall there?

The Notorious ESTEBAN BUTTEZ (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

Probably. But by midnight it may not be.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

They're playing venues like the House of Blues. How much are tickets? And he's going to play these gigs with a pickup band they've rehearsed with twice?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

the record for getting sacked by the Fall is 16 seconds and is held by Arthur Kadmon. I am not kidding. He's somewhere on the "Room to Live" album

chris besinger (chris besinger), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

And he's going to play these gigs with a pickup band they've rehearsed with twice?

Let no one accuse MES of lacking a pair of great shiny brass balls.

Edward III (edward iii), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

ok, this has all made me want to purchase tickets more.

p@reene (Pareene), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

How is this any different from Chuck Berry, whose contract specifies that the promoter will provide a backing band?

pdf (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

MES doesn't watch you when you pee

chris besinger (chris besinger), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

yeesh, I thought this The Cairo Gang has already been sacked was a joke.

I hope the new lot can make it until Brooklyn. I have tickets but, who knows what to expect now.

kwhitehead (stephen schmidt), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

Ever since I heard that story about Mark E Smith going on Later.. and having a contract written up saying that Jools couldn't play piano with him I've considered him a bit of a fake. Total nonsense. All he'd have to do is say "no" as I'm pretty sure a lot of bands who go on that show do.

I think a lot of this is PR and mythmaking. The irony is so many people fall for this man of the people act and cite him as one of the "real" ones.

Dannyl, Tuesday, 9 May 2006 21:37 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, driving your band to quit halfway through the american tour is a pretty brilliant PR move.

p@reene (Pareene), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

Are you the new DJ?

The Notorious ESTEBAN BUTTEZ (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

Poor old Cairo Gang. Is that a new record sacking for The Fall there?
-- The Notorious ESTEBAN BUTTEZ (estebanbutte...) (webmail), Yesterday 8:15 PM. (later) (link)

Wasn't there that evening with Terry Hooley (of Good Vibrations fame) where they were going to play Beach Boys cover versions? Which was a goer for about 15 seconds?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 07:30 (nineteen years ago)

What happened to the gang who played with the Fall on the 2003 tour?

They managed to make it to Seattle then, and that was a good show!

And the band seemed the happiest of them all... outside MES and his keyboardist/girlfriend (or wife?)

At this point, anyone who agrees to tour with and play with the Fall must absolutely sign a I'm Doing This To Build Character clause... Hell, I'll be guitarist for the Fall if a tour falls (no pun intended) during a contract break. I don't mind a miserable mean guy fucking with my guitar amp every night.

DOQQUN (donut), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 09:17 (nineteen years ago)

Hell, I'll be guitarist for the Fall if a tour falls (no pun intended) during a contract break. I don't mind a miserable mean guy fucking with my guitar amp every night.

Neither do I! Someone get word to MES that there is an ILX Fall-pickup band ready to go here

LOL Thomas (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

They'll be starting an ILTF board soon. Esteb?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:09 (nineteen years ago)

Narnack says that Rob, Tim and Orpheo are all in the Cairo Gang, as well as being in Darker My Love and On the Hill. Mea culpa.

- stefan (- stefan), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

Cairo Gang is not the backing band, nor ever was

Holy shit, I just got the BEST idea for a reality show!

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 14 May 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

Mike Leigh. Not the film director, but his exact double (or thereabouts). 1977.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 15 May 2006 12:34 (nineteen years ago)

reports from SF last night? anyone going to see em tonight?

that's so taylrr (ken taylrr), Monday, 15 May 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

Both NYC gigs are now sold out, which doesn't completely surprise me, although I remember buying tickets a few days in advance the last couple times they came through.

TRG (TRG), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

saw part of the SF show last night, and left after about 4 songs. it just seemed way too weird to see four 20-somethings trying so hard to do everything right while one 50-something tried so hard to do everything wrong. just became such a complete caricature of everything the Fall once was. i was praying for a banana peel to come out of nowhere... would've at least made it a bit unpredictable

that's so taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

four 20-somethings trying so hard to do everything right while one 50-something tried so hard to do everything wrong.

that's like the best description of the Fall ever.

p@reene (Pareene), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

"The Fall"

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

Incredibly, Smith is still only a 40-something.
