Taking up Andy K's "XTC on Steroids" description of Burning Airlines, what parallel equations would you propose?

Curt, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Obviously, formulas such as "Grateful Dead on pot" or "Nico on smack" are disqualified.

Curt, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate when ppl say such and such are like the "Beatles on acid". Werent the Beatles on acid anyway?

Michael Bourke, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i read in a biography of john lennon that the beatles were fond of coke+heroin speedballs during the recording of sgt. peppers. but that's somewhat off topic.

"x on acid" is the most abused cliche in music writing. Even pointing this out feels like a cliche.

fritz, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

More literature needs to be written about the effects of Special K and GHB and huffing and other such things. The drug-metaphor vocabulary of today's critics will remain stunted until such steps are taken.

Of course THIS IS A CLICHE! Some might even say an ABUSED cliche.

Syd Barrett = (Robyn Hitchcock) * (Robyn Hitchcock)

Roxy Music = David Bowie - (David Bowie - Bryan Ferry - Phil Manzanera - Andy MacKay - A), where A = Eno if album = 1-2, A = Eddie Jobson if album = 3-5, A = undefined if album = 6-8.

Joe, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I remember accidentally putting a Joy Division LP on at 45, and it sounded like Eartha Kitt Sings Punk, if that counts...

Martin Skidmore, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

David Cassady - Bubblegum = Grant McLennan

Dave225, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Martin, I see no reason why it shouldn't count if you're the one taking the drugs.

Curt, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Spacemen 3 - heroin = Low

"x on acid" is the most abused cliche in music writing. Even pointing this out feels like a cliche.
But calling The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion "X on acid" works nicely.

I have heard my own band often referred to as:

"Primus on acid", "Primus on crack", "Primus on speed", "Primus on crystal meth", and even, yes, "Primus on angel dust".

Which is funny, cause I'm sure before anyone was familiar with Primus, they were often referred to as "[band name here] on [drug type here]", too.

I wanna hear some "[band name] on Prozac" or "[band name] on Zyrtec" prescription-comparisons instead of all these referrences to illegal substances from now on. DO IT. ;-)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 2 December 2002 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I think the Andrew WK formula is more like...

Trent Reznor - absynthe + nitrous oxide = Andrew WK

Just my opinion...

I wanna hear some "[band name] on Prozac" or "[band name] on Zyrtec" prescription-comparisons instead of all these referrences to illegal substances from now on.

How about:
Anthony Keidis = Meatloaf on Feldene

~~"How about:

The "Mr. Bungle = [band name] on [drug name] trifecta"!

Beach Boys + mescalin = Mr. Bungle (California only), whereas...
Frank Zappa + absynthe = Mr. Bungle (Disco Volante only), and...
Fishbone + crack cocaine - melatonin = Mr. Bungle (first album only)

John Wesley Harding == Billy Bragg after a whole gallon of Colyte (its an industrial strength laxative)

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

That reminded me of a headline on my "The Onion" calender from this month, which reads:

"Ritalin Cures Next Picasso"

I about busted a teste laughing.
