Is it the concept of a Pitchfork orgasm that makes you sad?

Daver, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Taking sides: being full of living shit vs. being full of dying shit

Andy K, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ethan doesn't want to be Def Jux' bitch. Come to think of it, I'd prefer to be referred to as their pimp.

Dare, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

regardless of what's being covered that fucking review takes smug punchability to new unforeseen heights, i seriously considered sending a complaint letter after reading it which is not only something i've never done in my life but sort of ridiculous considering i'd be attacking the organization i work with (oops).

ethan, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But smug punchability can be a good thing for an MC ... why not a reviewer? Is it just that particular articulation of it?

Dare, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

anything good is bad when pitchfork does it.

ethan, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

whoever this brad haywood is, he seems painfully unaware. does ryan endorse this sort of writing? pitchfork at one point was a wonderful outlet for musical discovery...jesus is not alone

otis, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"it's almost ridiculous how good Eminem's beat is-- strings, synth and 'Good Vibrations'-style theremin tones roll easy like 1987."

?

Dare, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but dare you're forgetting that i fucked your girl!!

ethan, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No Ethan is right. The three albums a year quota thing is either wicked satire blunted by the probability that its actually true or is just unironic acknowledgement, in which case, ugh. And remember kids - NONE OF THOSE BEATS ARE "DANCEABLE"!

You're not writing PF because -- as the review says -- you don't have the balls. And you're a lemming.

Andy K, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When people make fun of backpackers, this is the sort of thing they're talking about.

Jordan, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I try to ignore the lame smug collegiate self-congratulatory bits and skip ahead to see what he has to say about the comp. At least he wrote something about the music, and what he wrote wasn't horrible. I haven't seen the record written up anywhere else, and it's something I'm interested in, so I was happy to see it. Where should I go, Ethan, for a better write up on this particular record?

dan, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I fully agree that the perspective in the review's a bit condescending, and could have been articulated better. I was just giving Ethan a hard time because I'd rather see him write about hip- hop for Pitchfork (or any site) than just whine about those who do.

Dare, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I couldn't read past the first couple of paragraphs. Why didn't Ryan get Ethan to do this piece?

RickyT, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Whatever disease the NME has, it appears to be catching.
