NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 27 March 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

I can't read this thread because it just kills me to think I live 5 hours from Montreal and theres no way I'll be going to this.

Now if this was a mutek 2007 thread. Isn't Richie Hawting confirmed too.

Tokyo Ghost Stories (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 01:11 (nineteen years ago)

i'm planning on being there! i have a feeling they're going to announce more big acts soon...

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 01:12 (nineteen years ago)

Jan Jelinek man!

I found reading that was among the most painful for me. I think he's being billed as Farben for it too, which is arguably more of a miss-out for me at least.

Tokyo Ghost Stories (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 01:33 (nineteen years ago)

He played as Farben in 2003, so I would expect (and prefer) that he perform the material he's recorded under his real name since then.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 01:40 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, probably, what with releasing a new album and all.

Tokyo Ghost Stories (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 01:48 (nineteen years ago)

lineup looks really good so far!

breakfast pants (disco stu), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 02:02 (nineteen years ago)

Hell yes it does!

particularly excited for:

Alex Under
Guido Scheider
Akufen
Dandy Jack

-Think there's any chance of a crazy laptop electronic percussion orgy fest the likes of last year's (under the "narod niki" name I believe)?

Trace Henry (Trace), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 03:36 (nineteen years ago)

narod niki happened in berlin...not in montreal, sadly. i don't think so.

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 03:37 (nineteen years ago)

Narod Niki played at Mutek in 2003, not last year. But I would definitely count on a festival-exclusive collaboration or two ...

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 04:16 (nineteen years ago)

i meant, narod niki last year happened in berlin.

i'm still looking at this list of acts thinking they're going to pull a rabbit out of a hat! also, there aren't enough women on this list so far!

also: DEMF? is it happening? i heard that it is? if so, i might make it to detroit this year...

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to be missing this by being only like £100 or so shy of making it, argh!

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

yeah DEMF is on this year, the paxahau people are organizing it

should be good

manuel (manuel), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
Let's add the following "confirmed" artists to the list above:

Clark - UK
Deadbeat - Canada
Eliot Lipp - US
Hrdvsion - Canada
Junction SM - Switzerland / Chile
Magda - USA
Marc Houle - Canada
Mike Shannon, feat. Anaïs & Tim Bones - Canada
Mossa - Canada
Pole & Band (H. Leichtmann: drums, Zeitblom: bass) - Germany
Richie Hawtin - Canada
Sensors_Sonics_Sights (Cécile Babiole, Laurent Dailleau, Atau Tanaka) - France

No indication where we'll find Hawtin and Magda as yet.

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Monday, 24 April 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

'as yet' because: "The complete and detailed program of performances, panels and workshops will be posted on this site starting April 26th."

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Monday, 24 April 2006 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

Anybody else going to Detroit and Mutek both?

Faso (underlit), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 07:16 (nineteen years ago)

Wow. The line-up got real exciting all of a sudden! I mean, sure, I'm biased because I'll be in town for all of these events, but...

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 23:35 (nineteen years ago)

This looks good, but like last year, it's stocked with MUTEK alumni. I wouldn't think twice about going if I lived in Montreal, but as an out of towner, this is getting a bit repetitive.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 27 April 2006 01:33 (nineteen years ago)

25 of the 35 thus-far-confirmed/listed artists have not played a previous Mutek.

Of the 10 artists that have played previous Muteks, more than half have released something new/significant (e.g., a full-length) in the past 12 months.

Three of those 10 live in MTL.

And so, speaking as an extremely-biased-by-way-of-deep-love-for-MTL and five-hours-away-out-of-towner, 70% 'newness' is still enough a draw for me.

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Thursday, 27 April 2006 02:52 (nineteen years ago)

i might be going the weekend before, so if that happens, i might as well stick around for mutek

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 27 April 2006 02:54 (nineteen years ago)

lawrence!! henrik schwarz!!! hawtin's special guest!!!! (who better not forget his passport!)

breakfast pants (disco stu), Thursday, 27 April 2006 03:20 (nineteen years ago)

25 of the 35 thus-far-confirmed/listed artists have not played a previous Mutek

I was only looking at the 3xNocturne + 1xPiknic you listed ... 16 acts (incl. collabs), 9 alumni by my count. They also keep turning to the same big names every year (e.g. Hawtin).

But I don't want to judge too harshly before the full schedule is released.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 27 April 2006 03:30 (nineteen years ago)

who were the swiss guys that everyone went nuts for last year? i forgot their names

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 27 April 2006 03:38 (nineteen years ago)

Galopiereinde Zuversicht (sp?)

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 27 April 2006 03:52 (nineteen years ago)

Richie Hawtin at Picnic Elektronik! RIDICULOUS! that is going to be unreal,I wish I was home in MTL for that. Now does anyone know what the fuck the "Darline Foundry" is?

Daniel Gelfer (gelfball), Thursday, 27 April 2006 07:50 (nineteen years ago)

The Darling Foundry is a former metal-works factory, empty for a time, since recycled into a visual arts space.

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Thursday, 27 April 2006 11:28 (nineteen years ago)

I will say this about the thus far announced line-up: I wouldn't object to a few (more, in some cases) Kompakt/Areal/Sender/Traum/Trapez artists added to the list.

On the other hand, supercool coup landing Lawrence.

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Thursday, 27 April 2006 11:32 (nineteen years ago)

Hypothetical question: DEMF or Mutek?

With limited funds and vacation days available, which one do you choose and why?

Trace Henry (Trace), Thursday, 27 April 2006 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

Having never been to Detroit, it's probably unfair (if not, uninformed) of me to say but for food, eye candy (male & female), and all around environment - for my money - I don't know if there's a city in North America that compares to MTL.

(Although I do miss the 1.00 USD -> 1.50 CAD conversion rate. Used to be that the high-brow cuisine and top-notch hotels of MTL were a little easier on the budget. It's been getting closer and closer to a 1-to-1 dollar match over the last few years [thank you Meeester Bush!] and, as a result, a little less luxurious.)

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Thursday, 27 April 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

i don't miss it!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 27 April 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

i don't miss it!!

The exchange rate or MTL? If the former, and you're Canadian, I know (judging from a few of my Canadian colleagues) you're not alone. I guess it makes buying things stateside a little more luxurious?

But, as an aside, isn't tourism one of Canada's biggest draws/moneymakers (at least during the summer)? And doesn’t a better-for-we-gringos exchange rate, in turn, actually help the Canadian economy (assuming it needs "help")?

I noticed what at least I perceived to be Canada’s recognition of a downturn in number of visitors manifested by the increased adverts in the subway, etc. for tourism in MTL/Quebec/Canada in Greater Boston (and "local" Web sites) last spring/summer and figured it was triggered by the steadily slowing stream of U.S. tourists (which was, I assume, precipitated by the aforementioned, less favorable exchange rate).

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Thursday, 27 April 2006 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone been to both DEMF and Mutek that could shed some light on the festival v. festival debate?

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Thursday, 27 April 2006 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

I wasn't trying to poise my initial hypothetical in terms of debating the merits of one festival against the other. I honestly can only choose one, and since there seems to be a good deal of overlap between the two festivals, I wanted to see what would draw people strongly to one instead of the other.

I'm personally drawn to DEMF to see the big name Detroit acts (Carter, May, Craig, et. al) on their home turf, not to mention the label showcases from Kompakt and Ghostly plus the J-Dilla tribute.

Mutek, on the other hand, has the advantage of being held in a city I'd much rather hang out in if alone for the weekend, and the possibility of the "special guest" in Richie's set during the Piknic thing has me feeling all spindly inside.

Trace Henry (Trace), Thursday, 27 April 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

...also I've never been to either festival, if that sheds some light on the query.

Trace Henry (Trace), Thursday, 27 April 2006 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

i'm canadian, i live in montreal, and having a stronger dollar relative to the US makes it way easier for me to travel in the states or buy US stuff.

and frankly i could do with a few less tourists up in my grill!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 27 April 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

What?

You mean to tell me you (and the rest of MTL) could use fewer single/married/soon-to-be-married U.S. men being loud and/or obnoxious up 'n' down St. Catherine, St. Laurent, Sherbrooke, Crescent, St. Denis -- they really are everywhere, aren't they?

As far as my "festival v. festival" remark, I don't mean in that in the pissing contest my-dad-can-beat-up-your-dad sense (although mine could...) -- I'm honestly curious to know if my suspicion is correct that Mutek might be more of a more intellectual/sultry/adult affair, whereas DEMF is a bit more of a sleepless/sweaty/ravey undertaking.

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Thursday, 27 April 2006 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

more of a more? more of an...

ah yes, thank you.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 27 April 2006 22:34 (nineteen years ago)

Galoppierende Zuversicht - and that's plain German, they could have gone for something much worse in Swiss züridütsch.

Styro2000 & Bang Goes brought their A-game (and now they're in a really good place)

I went to Fuse-In and Mutek (and Elektra) in 2005. They complimented each other really well, So it'd be hard to recommend one over the other. Mutek has a much wider range of experiences, probably because the city itself offers so much more. Detroit is not very fun to explore after festival hours. It is like going to Mecca for some, however. History just bleeds from the sidewalks and the abandned skyscrapers give the whole thing a really epic feel. You won't get the good feeling of a real pilgrimage by going to Mutek, but you won't trip over as many giant pants and glowsticks either. And there's so much more to do. Detroit has one iffy greek resteraunt open after festival hours, for instance. The downtown is really abandoned. I guess I'd choose Mutek if I had to.

Mutek might have you sitting down to listen a bit too often and your feet might ache from endless activity in Detroit. Either way, you're going to have an amazing time.

Jason W Fellows (underlit), Monday, 1 May 2006 03:50 (nineteen years ago)

So the updated Mutek site has Ricardo Villalobos vs. Richie Hawtin playing in the Piknic rather than "special guest". I guess it was always assumed to be him, but I'm still excited.

Trace Henry (Trace), Thursday, 4 May 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)
