Slowest Band Ever

Well, it's a logical progression from the Fastest Band Ever thread. And I doubt the answer's Black Sabbath or Flipper.

Sloth.

Name:sloth

Country:United Kingdom

Description:Heavy, sluggish Doom-metal for fans of Electric Wizard. Keywords would be thick, sludge, psychadelic, crushing, filthy and heavy. Actually it would be heavy 10 times over and then the other keywords!

Discography: 2000: 'The Voice of God' (CD) Eccentric Man / The Music Cartel

Codiene?

Codeine sounds slower than they actually are. Each beat seems to fall just a fraction later than seems right. Same with Low only they actually are, or were, very slow.

Curt, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Earth, surely. They didn't even use drums.

Bluetile Lounge.

I know very little about the band, but I imagine them being in concert and being too lazy to actually stand up, so they all lie down on the floor. :-)

Their two albums are great slowcore stuff (the second album, "Half Cut", is IMO a work of genius, although I can't talk anyone else into liking it!). They sound kinda like the Red House Painters at a slower- than-Low tempo with Cocteau Twins/REM Murmur-era indeciperhable lyrics.

On the other hand, maybe Low is a bit slower. "Born By The Wires" from the "Songs for a Dead Pilot" EP is almost motionless.

Slow and done well: Low, Melvins.

A Nairn, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They didn't even use drums.

On the other hand, playing slow with drums makes a band sound slower still. Listening to Low, I can't help imagining what Mimi would be doing to pass the time between snare taps if she weren't singing.

Curt, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, earth and low. i'm not sure you can look further ?

kieron, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently Bluetile Lounge were excruciating to watch live. My g/f went to school with one of them and saw them live several times. Falling asleep was not uncommon. People brought cushions and pillows to see them.

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

my vote goes for codeine too. lots of dead air.

fields of salmon, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Probably not slowest band ever, but Savoy Grand are Pretty. Fucking. Slow.

emil.y, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned

Earth used drums by album number three and on their fourth they even branched out to vocals (a Kiss cover or something)... admittedly very slow all the same

Sonicred, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, see, never heard the third album. At least not to my knowledge.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Factrix was also Pretty. Fucking. Slow. around the time of Scheintot.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'loads of dead air' about codeine someone said.. then, is 4:33 a slow.. erm, song?

made me also think of a certain song by a band named (something like) ostzonesupperwurfelmachenkrebs.

i recall that listening to it feels a bit like sitting in waiting- room, alone, and for a long time.

9, Wednesday, 13 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, wouldn't the fattest band ever *also* be the slowest?... ;-)

Oh wow, that actually sounds *great!* I can't think of any band I'd rather fall asleep listening to than Bluetile Lounge. :-)

Boris, St. Vitus, Fushitsusha, Melvins (except when they're fast, then they can be very very fast), Earth.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 8 March 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The Melvins. Half the time you don't even know if your record player is on the right speed, especially on Gluey Porch Treatments.

Evan (Evan), Sunday, 9 March 2003 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Khanate is the slowest band I've ever heard, but I haven't heard enough Sunn O))) that I'm willing to argue the point. Southern Lord gets slower with each experiment.

I know with Khanate that I need a definition here on what is slow and what is without tempo. I'm not convinced they follow any time schemes.

Shaun McCormack (shaun), Sunday, 9 March 2003 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd have to say that Supergrass seem pretty fucking Down syndromed to me.

pedro the jagura (pedro the jaguar), Sunday, 9 March 2003 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The Melvins record called "Melvins" (unless you somehow got a copy of it before they had to put a black sticker over the "Lysol" title) and "Charmicarmicat" from EggNog make most of Gluey Porch Treatments sound fleet by comparison. Quite a deluge.

Regarding the amazingly funny comment about Supergrass (whom I actually like), the leader of the band Reynols actually IS Down Syndrome.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Friday, 14 March 2003 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

but Reynols don't play slow.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 14 March 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

dakota suite and savoy grand must be up there in slowness

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 14 March 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The only 3 shows I've ever fallen asleep at and therefore I felt had to be slow: Low, Aerial M and... Amon Tobin.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 14 March 2003 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I have almost no recollection of seeing Amon Tobin except that there was some nice soothing bass.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 14 March 2003 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Corrupted. at least when they bolt the sludgegates and slip into snorecore gear (Llenandose...)

summerslastsound (summerslastsound), Friday, 14 March 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Musically, the slowest bands ever must be Talk Talk or The Blue Nile. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 14 March 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

talk talk, low, red house painters, dakota suite all good suggestions.

codeine perhaps aren't quite as determinedly snail-paced as the aforementioned...

the aptly named black heart procession

j.a.e., Friday, 14 March 2003 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Btw. The Blue Nile is actually a slow band in several ways, not only musically but also possibly the least profilic band ever.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 14 March 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the only bands still in the running are: Thrones, Khanate, Sunn O)) and Earth. It's tough to think of anyone slower. Maybe the heaviness, though, adds a feeling of slowness that isn't really there? Khanate are definitely the "slowest" band I've seen live.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 25 December 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Sunn O))) are so slow they bow to each other every time they hit a new chord, so they're my tip for #1.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Friday, 26 December 2003 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir, how is Talk Talk slow? It's My Life is far from a slow tempo tune. There are many other examples.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Saturday, 27 December 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It's My Life isn't the slowest Talk Talk song.

man, Saturday, 27 December 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

1982-86 Talk Talk isn't necessarily slow, but their 1988-92 style (which, I suppose, would also be their current) is.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 28 December 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Swans, around 1982-86 became very, very slow and relentless.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Monday, 29 December 2003 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Earth. I think Melvins slowness is the most impressive of any band I've heard. My favorite Melvins moments were the ones where it actually sounded like they recorded regular heavy rock tunes and slowed em down as slow as the machines will let em. Mostly the drums. Not many could thump the skins like ole Dale Crover. He would fit crazy fills in between hi-hats and shit. Crover was to slow what Lombardo was to fast.

Frogman Henry, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 00:49 (eighteen years ago)

I've just ordered two CDs by Monarch! (punctuation in original), and I think they may well be contenders for this thread. One of the discs is a split EP with Elysium, a powerviolence/noisecore act who contribute four songs in six minutes. Monarch! fill the rest of the CD with a single hour-long track. Similarly, their s/t release is a 2CD set with two songs on Disc One and one on Disc Two.

unperson, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 00:59 (eighteen years ago)

We talkin tempo here? Or IQ?

factcheckr, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 05:08 (eighteen years ago)

I've heard many of the records here but I'm almost certain that a slower band than all of these is Bohren & Der Club Of Gore. There really is no slower band.

frilly, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 05:10 (eighteen years ago)

Cool. I'll have to check them out.

Drooone, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 05:19 (eighteen years ago)

Frilly is quite correct. They are several snail lengths slower than Swans.

moley, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 05:19 (eighteen years ago)

Slower than the Swans? Man, they sound pretty Bohren.

Bluetile Lounge were excruciating live due to the fact that they'd stand there for ten fucking minutes between songs having a bit of a chat & tuning their guitars & stuff.
