****GROOVY MAN! IT'S THE THREAD FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE ILX 60'S POLL****

Message Bookmarked
Bookmark Removed
Following popular request here's the thread for nominations for the ILX best of the 60's polls.

You will be allowed 15 nominations for tracks and albums, split anyway you like. If you want to pick 15 albums and no tracks or vice versa then you can. Please specify what format your choices are, as per my entry below.

Only albums releasd in that decade will count, so no subsequently released compilations. However I'm minded to allow concert recordings which were subsequently released to be included e.g Sam Cooke's live at the Harlem Square Club or Bob Dylan's live at Manchester Free Trade Hall.

Deadline will be 17:00 BST 30th April 2005

Use this thread to also pimp for any songs/albums, YSI tracks, to discuss what format you'd like the voting to be in and any other folderol.

The deadline is a year ago?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

won't splitting tracks and albums make the voting really splintered?

-- sovietpanda (sovietpand...) (webmail), March 29th, 2006 5:21 PM.

1. Oops, deadline is 30th April 2006 of course.
2. I'm not sure what you mean by splintered. There'll be two separate polls, and I'm sure there'll be sufficient noms over the next month to make it worthwhile.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

xxpost

I suppose you can nominate something which has already been nominated, but it's a little pointless as it'll still only be allowed to get voted for once.

I nominated Maytals - Pressure Drop way up top, but it appears to have placed in the 70's poll, making its nomination here somewhat moot. Can I replace?

The Maytals was included in the 70s poll because noone pointed out that it shouldn't be there until it was too late. It sort of went in by default, but its a 60s song.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Monday, 24 April 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

Hmmm... It doesn't look as if "Son of a Preacher Man" has been nominated yet, and this poll wouldn't be right without it.

So, please delete my nom. for "lovechild" by the Supremes (if someone else nominated that, that would be nice) and insert:

Dusty Springfield "Son of a Preacher Man"

hobart paving (hobart paving), Monday, 24 April 2006 14:16 (nineteen years ago)

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 27 April 2006 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

I think I've got all the various nominations down, but please check to see that yours is there. There's a little over two days to go for nominations so get them in (hint - more Tim Hardin and Nina Simone).

At the moment I'm planning to allow people to vote for up to 40 tracks/albums, with 800 points to be split between them, with a max of 50 points. In addition one track/album will be allowed a bonus 100 points, so could get 150 points in total. But as always I'm open to suggestions.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 27 April 2006 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry to make a minor change over a nomination that has no chance of making the final list, but now that I think of it, the Fairouz album is just: Bint el Harass. (Safarbarlek is a different soundtrack album, but the two were put togehter on CD.) Thnx.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Thursday, 27 April 2006 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

All tracks, no albums from me:

1) The Beatles - The Word
2) The Doors - Strange Days
3) The Doors - People Are Strange
4) The Doors - The Crystal Ship
5) The Everly Brothers - Cathy's Clown
6) Jimi Hendrix Experience - Spanish Castle Magic
7) Jimi Hendrix Experience - Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)
8) The Kinks - Sunny Afternoon
9) The Kinks - Tired of Waiting For You
10) The Mamas and the Papas - Creque Alley
11) The Monkees - Last Train To Clarksville
12) The Small Faces - Itchycoo Park
13) Velvet Underground - Venus in Furs
14) Velvet Underground - Sunday Morning
15) Velvet Underground - Here She Comes

if any of these are invalid for some reason then I'll have The Beatles - You Never Give Me Your Money as my subsitute

Teh HoBBler (the pirate king), Thursday, 27 April 2006 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

I think the 70s poll had a good structure, although the pollster allowed for 70s votes...that might be too much? Or not. And do you want blurbs? Say yes!

musically (musically), Thursday, 27 April 2006 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

Can we have transferrable votes, please? So that if something I give 25 points to doesn't make the top 100, my votes are transferred to a second choice and so on until my votes actually count for something. Also we need to ensure that too many Americans/Brits/whatever don't skew the votes, so every country gets the same number of points, so Tuomas would get as many points to spend as all Americans put together, but obviously since we don't know how many people will vote from which countries, this will need adjusting after the poll...

Or we could just list two top 30s and forget about the fannydangle.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 28 April 2006 11:36 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry if I didn't make it clear but there will be 2 polls, one for albums and another for tracks. If people just wish to submit an ordered list then I'll use 1=40 points, 2=39 etc which will work out around 800 points in total. Unordered lists will get 20 points each.

I think the idea of transferable votes while nice in theory will be a nightmare to do in practice. I don't think you can do something about weighting different countries votes, however I'll get people to state their country and I could produce separate polls after the main one.

As for blurbs, I'll be very happy and will encourage people to write something.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 28 April 2006 13:52 (nineteen years ago)

I really like the idea of a more democratic poll with #1 not having that much more sway over #2. I think it's also fitting for this decade as people aren't as fanboyish about certain 60s albums and songs as they are about more recent years in music.

Cunga (Cunga), Friday, 28 April 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

Bump - Just under 24 hours to go.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Saturday, 29 April 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

C'mon people, let's nominate some Beatles songs! And FYI, there are a lot of 70s tracks in the last round-up you did...ABC, Gotta See Jane, and Signed, Sealed, Delivered (sadly, and I bet it wasn't even nommed in the 70s poll because everyone thought it was a 60s track), etc. And since I never replaced my nom for ABC with anything, replace it with "Love Child" by the Supremes.

I'm ready for some voting and some revealing. Could we have (much) less than a month for the voting, plz?

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 29 April 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

Bless ya, musically, both for nominating Love Child and for saying nice things about the 70s poll.

Billy - I would advise making things relatively easy for yourself and laughing heartily at anyone who suggests transferrable votes. Certain people whinged at me for not allowing more than 70 votes in the 70s poll. Do what you can cope with counting, otherwise its way too much.

a note: Sugar Pie Honey Bunch was known as I Can't Help Myself in some countries. Also, I'd nominated This Old Heart Of Mine half a dozen posts earlier.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 1 May 2006 09:39 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's only known as "I Can't Help Myself." Oh wait, that was probably a joke. My mistake.

I've been away past couple of days so missed the 'deadline' yesterday. The nominations phase is now closed, however I'll include those nom's which have came in since yesterday.

I'll post details tomorrow as to how the voting will work out. Thank you for your interest so far

Do de doo...

Fastnbulbous (Fastnbulbous), Friday, 9 June 2006 05:11 (nineteen years ago)

I'm about halfway tallying the votes, all being well I'll get them finished by the weekend. However once I've checked them all and asked people for blurbs/searched for comments it'll probably be later this month.

nicky lo-fi (nicky lo-fi), Friday, 9 June 2006 05:41 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks, I couldn't find the other thread. It doesn't come up in a "60's poll" search.

Fastnbulbous (Fastnbulbous), Friday, 9 June 2006 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

Got about another dozen ballots to go through, should get it done tomorrow, if the sun and the football don't distract me that is.

I think I know what's going to win the singles poll. Unless there's a lot of votes for some other tracks it looks pretty unassailable at the moment, and it's not one I would have expected to win too. Albums is a little less clear cut, with only 8 points separating the top 3, numbers 4-8 are all in contention too.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 9 June 2006 12:32 (nineteen years ago)

Funny I would have guessed the exact opposite, a very tight singles poll and a runaway for album.
