I have everything on this apart from the KoD and Wasted Youth, so will give it a miss, but good to see a decent Hannett comp.

It's been done twice before though with 'Martin' and 'Here Is The Young Man'. They may as well have done a definitive job this time and included New FADS, The High, Kissing The Pink,Crispy Ambulance, Blue In Heaven,Freshies, Minny Pops,ACR, Stone Roses, etc etc...but good to see SXXV and Pauline Murray included this time.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 31 March 2006 08:25 (nineteen years ago)

I was listening to an instrumental mix of Chris Sievey's "Camouflage" and enjoying the sonic resonance, off an old cassette. But I guess it's harder to licence and market some sort of 'rarities' box set based on a producer-for-hire.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 31 March 2006 08:31 (nineteen years ago)

I don't see why they couldn't have expanded up to 2CD, added second trax from the likes of New Order, Buzzcocks, Mondays etc and then accomodated some of the less well known bands that I mentioned. The marketing job would be the same. I don't know about licencing - the SXXV and Names tracks are available on LTM, so I don't see why the likes of the Stockhom Monsters and Minny Pops couldn't be included. Good cross-marketing for LTM, I'd say.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 31 March 2006 08:41 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I thought a 2CD would have made more sense.

19. Quick As Rainbows - Kitchens Of Distinction

whaa ... this was hannett? good god almighty, i never knew that. how did i not know this? i love hannett. i love the kitchens. this is like some weird synaptic misfire.

i have everything here (some of it several times over) except the only ones, but i'll buy it simply to have "she's a rainbow" on CD. greatest perfect-pastiche cover-version EVER.

i'm also going to buy the "hacienda hits" 3CD box, or whatever it's called ;)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 31 March 2006 09:24 (nineteen years ago)

actually, hang on. i don't have this:

17. Rebecca's Room - Wasted Youth

or this

14. The Last White Christmas - Basement Five

either.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 31 March 2006 10:12 (nineteen years ago)

Yes I have HITYM - that's not the right track order tho.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 31 March 2006 10:15 (nineteen years ago)

"suspended sentence", btw, is my favourite JCC track ever.

"they'd hang you for incontinence and fiddling your tax
failure to hang yourself justified the axe
A DEEDELY DEE, A DEEDELY DUM
looks like they brought back hanging
FOR EVERYONE"

and that awesome, awesome fuzz guitar. wow. i need to hear this song RIGHT NOW.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 31 March 2006 10:15 (nineteen years ago)

xpost I wondered about the alphabetical.

Is that "Second aspect" recorded off the flexi, like the Durutti Column "return of" CD?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 31 March 2006 10:37 (nineteen years ago)

Yes.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 31 March 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

I think I've got everything on this already.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 31 March 2006 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

whaa ... this was hannett?

The original single version, which is different from the album cut.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 31 March 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

should've used Dream Sequence 2, that's where Hannett really stretches his wings!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 31 March 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

"I was listening to an instrumental mix of Chris Sievey's "Camouflage"

That is a very strange thing for anyone to say.

everything, Friday, 31 March 2006 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

Best Reading massive thread ever.

The Day The World Turned Dayglo Redd (Ken L), Friday, 31 March 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

Grimly, I share your pain. I thought I was enough of a Martin Hannett fanatic (hey I've even got that Wasted Youth 7" so there!) but I guess not because I didn't bloody know he did Kitchens OR New FADS. So can I go outside and put a gun to my head now?

Also what happened to that lovely Hannett website that disappeared off the face of the earth one day?

Bimble The Thimble (Bimble...), Saturday, 1 April 2006 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

The original single version, which is different from the album cut.

coo ur. thanks ned. i can't wait to hear this now.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 2 April 2006 12:58 (nineteen years ago)

xpost it was still there yesterday (well, Friday), but unupdated to say the least.

mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 2 April 2006 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

Is Chris Sievey Frank Sidebottom?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Sunday, 2 April 2006 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

"Best Reading massive thread ever."

'Tis a little-known fact, but in the early days the various members of Joy Divison all regularly used to affect Berkshire accents and pretend to be from Tilehurst, in order to enhance the band's credibility and an air of authenticity to their post-industrial gloom.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Sunday, 2 April 2006 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

They originally wanted to build The Hacienda down the Basingstoke Road, but Safeway beat them to the site they were after.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Sunday, 2 April 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

"Is Chris Sievey Frank Sidebottom?"

Before becoming Frank Sidebottom, Chris Sievey was in a band called The Freshies, where he wrote a song called "I'm In Love With The Girl On The Reading Butts Centre Our Price Records Checkout Desk" (although he was later obliged to revise the title somewhat for legal reasons).

Stewart Osborne (who once went out with a girl who worked on the Reading Butts C, Sunday, 2 April 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

I did once visit the Mcr Virgin store, about the time of the record. There was a 'sandwich board' in the window, so I know it was the right store. It was not a megastore, just an ordinary Virgin shop. I guess they all are nowadays.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 3 April 2006 07:10 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, so, anyhow...
Is this (or will this) be available in the US? I didn't see this in the store when I was out looking yesterday.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Sunday, 9 April 2006 22:47 (nineteen years ago)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EJ9KJE/ref=sr_11_1/103-6142138-5479026?%5Fencoding=UTF8

It does say Big Beat UK, so I'll presume it's an import.

Lotta Continua (Damian), Sunday, 9 April 2006 23:02 (nineteen years ago)

I have got this CD now. It looks nice. I swapped it for "The Cabs".

Where is Reading Butts Centre?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 10 April 2006 10:37 (nineteen years ago)

It's called "Broad Street Mall" now.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 10 April 2006 11:05 (nineteen years ago)

Don't look for "Our Price", it's not there anymore.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 10 April 2006 11:06 (nineteen years ago)

Isn't there a health food shop where Our Price used to be?

Listen Records (which used to be opposite the top the of the escalator - there was some hippy clothes shop there last time I looked, right next to where all those food stalls are now) was always a much better record shop, but all the staff were male and not particularly atractive....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

The Sound Machine used to have bags that referred to second mysterious shop in that "precinct", but I never found the shop in question.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 07:10 (nineteen years ago)

Bah - I always preferred the original Factory 7" version of "Electricity", which wasn't produced by Hannett.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 10:04 (nineteen years ago)

[nextel spam]

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 15:54 (nineteen years ago)

does nextel sell ringtones that play Martin Hannett compositions?

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

Our IT support guy used to have "Electricity"* as a ringtone on his 'phone and was completely bemused when I started singing along to it one day - apparently he'd just downloaded it 'cos he liked the tune and didn't realise it was a proper song!

*- the OMD version, not the Beefheart one, sadly. What wouldn't I give....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

I like this CD - Jilted John is very good.

It is funny that U2 sound like Joy Division.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 20 April 2006 06:38 (nineteen years ago)

Everybody did (or wanted to) back then.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 10 February 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

Has any of Invisible Girls stuff been re-issued?

Ice Cream Electric (Ice Cream Electric), Saturday, 10 February 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

Not that I know of. Just noticed Penetration have new music and are touring. I don't really know their stuff that well, but the Pauline Murray LP and 10" and, as mentioned above, especially the b-side to the Dream Sequence 7", Dream Sequence 2. If you haven't heard this, you don't know what Hannett is capable of!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 10 February 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

yeah well i have the 24" and the special magical turntable to play it on

I've been outdone!

MY NAME IS FREEZER BURN (Bimble...), Saturday, 10 February 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

"Not that I know of. If you haven't heard this, you don't know what Hannett is capable of!"

Sounds like another job for Dan or James Nice then.

Ice Cream Electric (Ice Cream Electric), Saturday, 10 February 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

Dream Sequence 2

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 10 February 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

Ice Cream Electric (Ice Cream Electric), Saturday, 10 February 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

Holy shit Dan, that mother fucker ain't on my mother fucking Pauline & Invisible Girls CD!! What are you trying to do to me????!!!!!!!!

MY NAME IS FREEZER BURN (Bimble...), Sunday, 11 February 2007 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

I had to get it on vinyl because I am a Hannett whore.

MY NAME IS FREEZER BURN (Bimble...), Sunday, 11 February 2007 03:04 (eighteen years ago)

I got this on 10" vinyl, no sleeve! back in the day.

It sounded fantastic in the shop. As it did every time I played it after.

But no big hit? What a world.

mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 11 February 2007 09:24 (eighteen years ago)

Hannet really needs a "1981" style comprehensive box set, I reckons.

mark grout (mark grout), Sunday, 11 February 2007 09:29 (eighteen years ago)

Has anybody mentioned that Monsieur le Fopp has "Zero" for a fiver? I wish I didn't have it so I could buy it again, or whatever it is I always say.

PJ Miller, Thursday, 22 February 2007 13:06 (eighteen years ago)

I have the "Martin" cassette in the car, and the "Zero" CD in the other one.

Is there a one called "Hannett"?
