MRI - All That Glitters

Er... I forget when this is being released exactly but after the second listen I'm convinced it's the second-best Force Tracks release -- I think Luomo's Vocal City still leads their catalog, albeit by a nudge now. Anyone else heard it yet? Impressions? I'm obviously quite knocked out by it thus far.

(Feel free to spread further Force Tracks luvvv ritecheear...)

(There's a cute little doggie wearing some tres chic neckwear on the cover!)

Maybe this will be my next electronic purchase, then... ;-)

You think this is different from 'Rhythmogenesis,' Andy? How so?

Also, I cannot get a peep from the guy Jon at Force Inc. I really want my radio station to receive promos, but he absolutely will not answer my emails. I know the records would do great - I've gotten two calls just this semester of the "What's this? Where can I find it?" variety while playing 'Vocalcity' on my show. Any advice?

1. The productions aren't as sparse as the ones on Rhythmosupertramp; there's a decent amount of ornamentation (synths, synthetic strings, those vapor smudges) without overdoing it.

2. They seem to be more directed at the dancefloor, more straight-to- the-gut.

3. Hooks are a bigger factor (I swear the synthetic string lick on the second track comes very close to ripping off the CHiPs theme).

4. There are two full-blown vocal trax that aren't merely in the buried repeated phrase vein.

5. It sounds like they've been listening to a fair amount of disco and R&B lately (the disc is dedicated to Aaliyah and there's a spin on "Try Again").

6. It has the feel of an album.

7. It's not just enjoyable -- it's flat out fun.

It's definitely bigger and much more disco-y, maybe even to a fault. More listening will bare out the details, but the first spin left me questioning what exactly is 'microhouse' about it, if anything. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but the initial spin felt way more trance-y than I'd expected.

Another thing: the vocal track is something of a disappointment compared to the more fully realized one on the Electric Ladyland comp, and the quasi-'Try Again' Aaliyah tribute may in fact be lame.

This after one somewhat cursory listen, of course, but it did leave me thinking about loving certain things to distraction...

(And oh yeah, it's due out in April.)

You have advance copy of this album = I hate you.

two weeks pass...
Wow. God. Damn. I picked this up today on a day trip to Richmond, not at all expecting to find it (since I thought it didn't come out until next week!), but becoming very delighted when I saw the hideous cover! (Actually, I used to have a dog of that breed, so it's pretty touching on a personal level. :-) I'm only 2/3 of the way through my first listen, but Christ! It's fricking 5:15 in the morning here, and I'm completely awake, my nerves alive and my brain tingling. Juicy, tactile, electric, stealthy sizzles just racing through my headspace, a big fucking rush. This has my full and enthusiastic recommendation, and I can't wait to see what the rest of you all think of it.

To clarify for the neophyte -- okay, the exact name of the band/outfit/ guy/whatever is MRI? I need to know what to ask my local store for.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 31 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yup, Ned - MRI - and they're on Forcetracks. (If they can't find it under "Forcetracks," you might check "EFA.") I hope you like it!

...but the first spin left me questioning what exactly is 'microhouse' about it, if anything.

Andy B., I'm wondering what you mean by this. It still sounds VERY intricate, despite its more overt danciness than a lot of minimal house/techno. Perhaps I misunderstand what the "micro" in "microhouse" refers to, though.

Listening: MP3s of "All That Glitters", "Amethyst Pop Star"

Thinking: these guys need to get on the phone to Kylie re producing her next album STAT.

Luvvin it, obviously. Will say more when I've listened to everything, and more than once.

has time been kind(er) to "blue"? it seems to make more sense now, &c.

etc, Monday, 6 September 2004 21:49 (twenty years ago)

does "tied to the 80s" trick anyone else into thinking it's gonna turn into "u don't know me"?

etc, Monday, 6 September 2004 22:03 (twenty years ago)

eight years pass...

"Tied To The 80s" was robbed in the 00s poll. Friend who's has more Lamp-oriented tastes is digging it, reminds him of ... Teams? Apparently Ital was talking about Force Tracks w/him while they were hanging otu a few months ago, too.

Luvvin it, obviously. Will say more when I've listened to everything, and more than once.

Also you were right about the "Tied to The 80s" / "You Don't Know Me" connection, way back when.
