Writing about the Starlight Mints:

"Why is it that, with only a few exceptions, I almost always prefer songs that sound sort of like David Bowie to the ones actually written and performed by the man himself? It's similar to how a lot of my favorite acts owe some stylistic debt to Bob Dylan, but I'd be hard pressed to fill out a cdr with Dylan songs that I kinda like, much less love. In the case of this song, it sort of falls into my Bowie sweet spot between The Man Who Sold The World and Hunky Dory, so it's certainly playing to my bias against Ziggy Stardust, which I would never say is a bad album so much as it is one that I'd really rather not listen to again. (You know, kind of like Appetite For Destruction.)

If you're a member of the Starlight Mints, I feel like I should apologize to you for spending all of my time in this review talking about David Bowie. But please keep in mind that I'm basically saying that you wrote a better David Bowie song than 95% of the ones that he actually composed himself, and on top of it, you pulled off a better string arrangement than any I've ever heard on one of his albums. In other words, you have pwned a rock icon."

And Microsoft is hiring this guy? To write about music? That writing is as bad as their code, so I guess it fits. Enjoy those WMAs!

Starting a dim thread like this anonymously about a really nice guy who contributes a lot to this board? Dud Dud Dudley Moore.

why are those comments ridiculous anyway? i mean, he may be wrong (and i have a hard time believing that the starlight mints did what he said they did), but it's just his opinion based on what he has heard and what he likes. maybe the pwned part is a bit much. they weren't TRYING to pwn bowie, were they? who knows, maybe they were. i'm all for indie acts showing any hint of ambition or oneupmanship. if only cuz they are so often lacking in venom and vigour.

I'm not sure what the problem is here - is it that I'm just not way into Bowie and Dylan and Guns N Roses, or that I think that particular song is a better Bowie-style song than most Bowie songs? Or is this just someone really hating me? I'm not really clear on this.

But you know, that whole post is pretty firmly rooted in my own tastes and the way that I've experienced all of those artists. It's definitely true that the three of them are totally tainted by negative associations with people and being tied to bad experiences in my life, so it's kind of a personal thing, and I think that it's pretty clear that's where I'm writing from in this case. I'm also taking great care not to trash those artists or diminish them - there's songs by all three that I quite like. But if you're just going after me for not bowing at the alter of the canon, I don't know what to tell you other than "sorry, but I'm just not way into your favorite band."

those comments are not ridiculous - plenty of people prefer the rolling stones to, um, muddy waters or something; this sort of anonymous bashing is pretty piss-poor form
