Magazine freebie CDs that are worth keeping!

I just broke my phobia about throwing away records/CDs by this method:

Remove CD from case
Remove inlay from case
Bin CD and inlay
Reuse the tray for a CDr of your choice.

So, I now am in a position to get less cluttered by owning tons of CDs I will never play. You know the thing "Keith Richards selects his favourite Eric clapton blues bands in tribute to the Beatles' and Americana".

But having said that, I've been playing the latest NME 'new bands 2006' CD and actually enjoying it (rather than something you have to do to keep up). It's on its third play now.

So, any old mag cds you want to mention that you're glad you still own?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 3 April 2006 10:44 (nineteen years ago)

The DFA mix that came free with the last copy of Muzik magazine. TBH though I throw them all away. The only thing I wish I still had is the excellent Carl Craig track, Poontang (yes really!) that came free with Muzik's R&S tape. I've never found it on Soulseek.

Treblekicker (treblekicker), Monday, 3 April 2006 10:51 (nineteen years ago)

There was a CD from an old, old copy of "Ucunt", which had a really good baby huey track and a really good calexico track.

The Ladytron track on this otherwise pretty dreadful cover CD is great, different to (& better than) the album version.

Other than that, nothing, really. Cover CDs tend to get biined pretty quickly - I haven't got the space for them!

marcus (d90), Monday, 3 April 2006 10:59 (nineteen years ago)

musik did a good acid house cd, back in like 1998.

Real Goths Don't Wear Black (Enrique), Monday, 3 April 2006 11:03 (nineteen years ago)

Real Goths otm about that Muzik CD- Joey Beltram, Hardfloor, A Guy Called Gerald was on that CD.

Also, I quite liked those NME and Select cover tapes- Jon Carter and Fatboy Slim both did fun mixes in the mid 90s.

Jockey Slut's cover CDs were pretty decent as well.

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Monday, 3 April 2006 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

Well, I'll let that Keith one off. (I still have it)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 3 April 2006 11:07 (nineteen years ago)

I still have "Papercuts Route 147" or whatever it's called.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 3 April 2006 11:10 (nineteen years ago)

mixmag did a pretty good acid house revival one in '03, mixed by jon carter, I was listening to it before actually.

the last run of muzik covermounts were awesome - that dfa one, erol alkan, a french house thing mixed by cassius.

haitch (haitch), Monday, 3 April 2006 11:33 (nineteen years ago)

The recent Soulwax mix cd from Mixmag is quite good, especially the blend of Vitalic's "Fanfares" with Erol Alkan's Franz Ferdinand remix. And Mylo's compilation for Mixmag as well- it's nice to have "Put Your Booty Shorts On," "The Sky Was Pink" remix, "Texas," and "Piccadilly Circuits" on cd in one place. DFA/Muzik seconded, along with the Cassius mix for Muzik.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Monday, 3 April 2006 11:34 (nineteen years ago)

Lots of good ones from Mojo - the reggae primer one 3 or 4 yrs ago, 'Up Yours' the old/new punk comp, last month's Psych compilation, 'Instant Garage', The Roots of Hip-Hop and the Soul one that came before it. Also 'Class of 66' freakbeat comp. There was also a good soundtracks one.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 3 April 2006 11:47 (nineteen years ago)

The Postpunk Mojo one was decent as well, including the Fall, Mission of Burma, Scritti Polliti etc.

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Monday, 3 April 2006 11:57 (nineteen years ago)

I still have an old Vox covermount CD from Island, called "you can all join in again" (I think), which was good enough to include MBV's "We've got all the time in the world", so I didn't have to buy the real compilation it was issued on.

Mojo frequently do good CDs, especially when it comes to psych - they did one a few years back which reintroduced me to "Time Seller" by the Spencer Davies Group, a track I'd been hunting for years after hearing Jimmy Saville play it during his Sunday lunchtime show back in the early 80s when he played charts from various years. Worth the wait.

Rob M (Rob M), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:05 (nineteen years ago)

one of my FAVE EVER orbital tracks is a live from glasto version of 'impact' on a select tape from 1994.

if someone could WHY ESS EYE it i'd... be very grateful (did it ever get put on CD at all?)

Real Goths Don't Wear Black (Enrique), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

Mixmag did a kickass techno/hardcore freebie called 'I Love 1991' with Altern 8 / Scientist / Shamen / Joey Beltram / loads of other stuff. The Kurt Cobain tribute thing with NME from 3 or 4 years ago is pretty great (Slits / PJ Harvey / Bad Brains / Buttholes / Rites of Spring etc) altho I have most of it already.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

Oh HELL YEAH! Great stuff. Can't help you with the YSI but I'm fairly sure it was on some sort of charity comp, there must be an Orbital discography somewhere?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 3 April 2006 12:22 (nineteen years ago)

'Later' Lounge vols 1&2

A Select Mag - Festival Anthems thingy they could have sold for at least a tenner.

All my Smash Hits flexis (Nash The Slash, XTC ... all on coloured vinyl). We also released some of these with our fanzine. The make 'Lyntone' really takes me back to my early childhood .. itenabled countless tiny indie bands to be virtual label mates of the Beatles (well, the Christmas flexis, at least).

Jez (Jez), Monday, 3 April 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

Mojo's "The Roots of..." CDs are great, but they seems to have stopped the series. But the "Roots of Hip Hop" one is fantastic.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Monday, 3 April 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

DFA mix muzik
erol's One louder mix for muzik
Muzik acid house mastercuts CD
NMEs chemical brothers tape (w' tristessa durera)
the skint/wall of sound tape from jockey slut w' quadrophenia smaples.

the acid house mastercuts one is so good I have to check that it was given away free.

free gifts with muzic magazines.

flexi vs. tape vs. CD -taking sides?

dannyboy, Monday, 3 April 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

thos mojo comps were great .. helped by the fact that the packaging was pretty damn cool as well, something that is often missing from these freebies.

another good'un : electroclash by miss kittin.

i have a mad 50 track mash (2003 or 2004 ?) by Freelance Hellraiser that was covermounted but it doesn't appeal quite as much now as it did when i first got it.

mark e (mark e), Monday, 3 April 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

the Roots of Led Zeppelin Mojo CD I have is actually pretty great - Muddy Waters, Davey Graham, Spirit, Little Richard, Bert Jansch, John Fahey, etc. (the Roots of Hendrix one is yawwwwwwwwwnzz)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 3 April 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

The John Peel one is worth having, as is the Morrissey one, as is the Tommy one. Instant Garage is good, and saves you buying £15 CDs for just one track.

I don't like the ones that are just 'new stuff out this week' or whatever.

Obv, you can't beat Daily Mail Love Songs Vol 1 and 2.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Monday, 3 April 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

That orbital track (which is fantastic) was on a cd that was released i think by melody maker, for road trip which was similar or part of the war child charity.

I think it was a mail order only release, but could be wrong. I've got a copy but i'm in the process of moving, so it could take me a few days to get my hands on it.

davedave, Monday, 3 April 2006 18:59 (nineteen years ago)

Oh another Mojo vote, for the Chili Peppers influences comp. Harmonia and Circle Jerks on one free CD

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 3 April 2006 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

I will YSI Poontang and Impact Live at Glasto this weekend.

Tannenbaum Schmidt (Nik), Monday, 3 April 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

Les Rythmes Digitales mix CD for now defunct "Revolution" mag.

scnnr drkly, Monday, 3 April 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

I've got an LRD mix cd which came with the Melody Maker several years ago somewhere, will try to find it sometime.

I miss Select as they invariably had some good stuff (and some chaff) on the freebie cd's they dished out.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 3 April 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

the mojo ones are usually pretty good across the board...there was a raw soul one that was good...the mod one was good....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 3 April 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

Nice to see the DFA one fondly thought of. a weird skeleton in the closet, only because the magazine cover had this randdom model zombie dressed in an "electroclash" outfit, basically looking like Madonna in the Borderline video. We were horrified.

enjoy those of you who do not have it....

GALKIN (GALKIN), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 00:13 (nineteen years ago)

the Orbital was on a 3xCD set called A Serious Road Trip. I believe it was the only track on disc 3. I have it and have ripped it recently. Will send it when i get home unless someone beats me to it.

here it is:

biz, Tuesday, 4 April 2006 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

SKINT/WALL OF SOUND CASSETTE seconded

I guess no one likes Breaks here....but Muzik's plump dj's mix from about 4 years ago was tops...as was Mixmags ? krafty kuts from 3 or so years back

and knowledge mag often has excellent D'n'b mixes

grapple (grapple), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 00:43 (nineteen years ago)

Another good one from MOJO: Feed Your Head: 16 Mind-Blowing Classics

http://www.makingtime.co.uk/rfr/100drugs.html

Great Justin Robertson JDJ mix from Select:

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 00:53 (nineteen years ago)

"Another good one from MOJO: Feed Your Head: 16 Mind-Blowing Classics"

yeah..that's great....i have it in a 2 cd case with" MOJO guide Vol 1: Instant Garage" - also great : MC5, ELECTRIC PRUNCES,NY DOLLS,LOVE,RAMONES,COUNT 5,PAUL REVERE ETC ETC

grapple (grapple), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 07:44 (nineteen years ago)

You're talking about a different Orbital track, biz. Impact != Remind

Anyway, I ripped that Impact from the Select tape - see the YSI thread.

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 08:04 (nineteen years ago)

It's credited as "Remind (Live At Glastonbury)", but it's actually both "Impact - The Earth is Burning" and the beginning of "Remind" in one track.

Duh. You were right after all. Ignore.

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 08:05 (nineteen years ago)

thx stan! thx galkin!

Real Goths Don't Wear Black (Enrique), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 08:17 (nineteen years ago)

there was a cool big beat tape NME did that had chemical bothers and saul kane and stuff like that. i liked that one.

i am not a nugget (stevie), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 09:53 (nineteen years ago)

the one mixed by the chems (dec '94)?

i have a good select tape from '93, with one dove and... uhh, some other things on it.

Real Goths Don't Wear Black (Enrique), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 09:55 (nineteen years ago)

Mojo frequently do good CDs, especially when it comes to psych - they did one a few years back which reintroduced me to "Time Seller" by the Spencer Davies Group

Credit where credit's due, that was Uncut

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 09:55 (nineteen years ago)

i love the jon carter heavenly social one, that starts with st eitenne.

Real Goths Don't Wear Black (Enrique), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 09:56 (nineteen years ago)

Lime Lizard's guide to indie rock circa 93 is a pretty dudless tape. 'Limbs' by Truman's Water is on it

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 10:04 (nineteen years ago)

Lime Lizard's guide to indie rock circa 93 is a pretty dudless tape.

something's just plain wrong about this sentence.

Real Goths Don't Wear Black (Enrique), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 10:17 (nineteen years ago)

I remember the Lime Lizard SubPop one, purely for the sidelong "Earth" track.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 10:20 (nineteen years ago)

American indie rock, it was. Not that that would automatically preclude it from being shit, but like I say, all good choices

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 10:24 (nineteen years ago)

the one mixed by the chems (dec '94)?

that's the one.

i am not a nugget (stevie), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

unironic ysi?

(i had JUST started reading nme that autumn, but not every week, to my long-term chagrin.)
