DFA Remixes Chapter #1

so, what do we think of this? i like it quite a lot, altought i knew most of the tracks from 12", singles and other stuff. but, hell, the "dare"-remix still kicks ass.

Regular John (Regular John), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 16:48 (twenty years ago)

they all still kick ass, great to have in one place... tracklist is only slightly disappointing, but the second edition should take care of that. and i think the remixes they chose for the 12" set are slightly odd

http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000ERU5A4.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_V54760136_.jpg

1. Le Tigre - Decaptacon
2. Blues Explosion - Mars Arizona
3. The Chemical Brothers - The Boxer
4. Soulwax - Another Excuse
5. Radio 4 - Dance To The Underground
6. Fisherspooner - Emerge
7. Gorillaz - Dare
8. Metro Area - Orange Alert
9. Hot Chip - Just Like We (Breakdown)

yours fondly, harshaw. (mrgn), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 17:35 (twenty years ago)

yeah...this doesn't excite me much. i await volume 2!

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 17:55 (twenty years ago)

it's a bit sparse. *9* tracks!!??

piscesboy, Wednesday, 5 April 2006 18:01 (twenty years ago)

the boxer and emerge are okie-dokey

yours fondly, harshaw. (mrgn), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 18:02 (twenty years ago)

only because DFA releases tend to be an embarrasment of riches.

xp

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 18:05 (twenty years ago)

One of my personal favourites has always been the Metro Area one so I'm glad to see that's on there. Hasn't inspired me to rush out and buy it though (although I probably will at some point, completism rules!) and it's slim pickings, considering. I agree with Geeta. Chapter 2 should be better. Slide In, (Far From) Home, Sister Saviour and Rise all in the same place.

yer mam! (yer mam!), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 18:09 (twenty years ago)

i have them all in one place already. it's called #1 YOUR HARD DRIVE

a.b. (alanbanana), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 18:22 (twenty years ago)

*9* tracks!!??

The CD is nearly full, though- 76 minutes and change, IIRC. DFA remixes have many virtues, but compactness is not one of them.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 18:35 (twenty years ago)

Isn't that Gorillaz relick like 15 minutes long or something?

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 18:40 (twenty years ago)

i havent been too impressed with this so far

nervous (cochere), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 19:09 (twenty years ago)

If Sasha and Digweed made a rock record.....

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 19:14 (twenty years ago)

are you people out of your minds?

Metro Area - Orange Alert

don't play the "over it" card just because you've heard all these tracks. some people will discover this collection with fresh ears.

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 19:20 (twenty years ago)

right, geeta's not so hot on "Dare."
and six of the nine are over 8 minutes long.

imbidimts, Wednesday, 5 April 2006 19:22 (twenty years ago)

I adore the DFA! Long may they live and remix!

nicky lo-fi (nicky lo-fi), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 19:27 (twenty years ago)

i like most of these tunes, but i've burned out on all of them! it would have been cool if there was something totally new on this.

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 19:28 (twenty years ago)

yeah i'm with geeta, no arguing the goodness of most of these tracks but i can't really get excited about the orange alert remix some 4 years after the fact (or however long it's been)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 19:31 (twenty years ago)

dare and orange alert and one or two others aside, most of my favorite remixes aren't on this one. like "rise (dfa mix)," "far from home (dfa mix)", the dfa dub of 'sister saviour'...

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 19:34 (twenty years ago)

i mean dfa compilation 2 was a lot better in the newness & remixes department

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 19:36 (twenty years ago)

Almost every DFA remix is a hit or a miss depending on the vocals in the source material...as far as I'm concerned.

And sure this is true of lots of big remixers, Tiefschwarz to name one, but it's resoundingly true with the DFA.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 19:38 (twenty years ago)

so for people like me who haven't kept up w/the remixes, how is this album?

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 19:42 (twenty years ago)

(I've only heard the Le Tigre, Blues Explosion, and Radio 4 ones.)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 19:45 (twenty years ago)

yeah ronan i agree about the vocals aspect. i prefer dub/instrumental versions, especially if they involve the rapture!

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 19:47 (twenty years ago)

it's a tad overlong matos, but even while the vocals can be enervating (see k-han, j. spence, shaun ryder...) to where i honestly think the DFA seeks out cringeworthy vocal trax, they somehow trick me into tolerating them.

imbidimts, Wednesday, 5 April 2006 19:56 (twenty years ago)

i don't think that the dfa is that great at dealing with vocals in their remixes to be honest. this is one aspect where i think tiefschwarz might be better.

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 20:03 (twenty years ago)

I think they work great as a single package of elonagated disco nouveau. Made me appreciate the Chemical Brothers remix I had previously dismissed as "too slow". The Radio 4 is the only one I don't care for, even if it still *sounds* nice enough. What's the problem with the vocals? I like hearing voices like Jon Spencer, Damon Albarn and those people from Hot Chip and Le Tigre in a style (dance/house) you don't usually hear them in.

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 20:07 (twenty years ago)

THIS IS 2006 PEOPLE

Fight the Real Enemy -- Tasti D-Lite (ex machina), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 20:11 (twenty years ago)

Yeah what I meant was if I like the vocal or if it's interesting the remix is, if not or if it's a dub it's usually crap! This also might be because the vocals are the only thing that give alot of these remixes some kind of impact/point/reason people might notice if you play them out, when DJing.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 20:12 (twenty years ago)

should clarifiy, I don't mean the above for all remixes but definitely with the DFA, the Gorillaz one was huge, yes because it was a good remix, but without the vocal it'd be nothing.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 20:13 (twenty years ago)

that said, releases from the dfa stable with kickass vocals:

get up/say what
dance with me
casual friday
sunplus (dfa remix)
give me every little thing

all lcd productions would be vastly improved with a disco/house diva, i think

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 20:15 (twenty years ago)

wait till you hear their gavin & delia remix then...

imbidimts, Wednesday, 5 April 2006 20:18 (twenty years ago)

i think this is why i like the lindstrom approach to vocals. introduce them slowly, in an easy, almost sloppy way over a loose, ambling groove, and then slowly build to a peak that sounds tighter and tighter as it goes on. like the lindstrom version of lcd soundsystem's 'tribulations' (which is incredible) doesn't introduce the vocal until almost 3 minutes in--when they come in, it sounds revelatory.

this vaguely reminds me of the big argument we had on ILM a few years ago about tiefschwarz remixes being like kinder eggs!

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Tracklisting for Chapter 2:

01. Far From Home - Tiga
02. Shake Your Coconuts - Junior Senior
03. She Wants To Move - N.E.R.D.
04. Colours - Hot Chip
05. Hand That Feeds - Nine Inch Nails
06. Slide In - Goldfrapp
07. Destination Overdrive - Chromeo
08. In A State - UNKLE

This will be every 3rd party (i.e. non-DFA Records) remix we have done. The total running time on this is almost 80 minutes. It will be released before the end of the year.

OK sorry to interrupt, let the hating and debating continue!

and remember, the question is: "what do we think of this?"

GALKIN (GALKIN), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 20:31 (twenty years ago)

why they didn't make a double or triple cd box with (almost) all the remixes, should have been better so.... (and cheaper)

francesco brunetti, Wednesday, 5 April 2006 20:32 (twenty years ago)

Lindstrom's mix of "Call me Mr telephone" waits 'til 5:30 Chicken Lips mix doesn't drop the vocals til 8:30!

xp

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 20:33 (twenty years ago)

oops

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 20:34 (twenty years ago)

even while the vocals can be enervating (see k-han, j. spence, shaun ryder...) to where i honestly think the DFA seeks out cringeworthy vocal trax, they somehow trick me into tolerating them.

I tend to imagine it's the other way around--most of the time, remixers are contacted by the artists (or the artists' managers). as the Vol. 2 tracklist shows, it seems obvious that the first one was all indie/indie-identified artists, and the next one will be less so overall.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 20:35 (twenty years ago)

the Gorillaz one was huge, yes because it was a good remix, but without the vocal it'd be nothing

i agree that the vocal makes up a big part of the hook on that remix, but the vocal-less version is amazing! it's like vitalic gone disco!

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 20:38 (twenty years ago)

but they do decide how much to excise or leave in.

imbidimts, Wednesday, 5 April 2006 20:47 (twenty years ago)

is the vocal-less DARE remix difft in any other way, i mean, besides being vocal-less? (avocal?)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 21:06 (twenty years ago)

nah it's the same thing

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Lindstrom's mix of "Call me Mr telephone"

WHATTTTTTTTT. i need to hear this!!

joseph (joseph), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 21:41 (twenty years ago)

the cover is pretty fucking great. it totally sums up the DFA style. one part early hip hop/old soul concert poster

"our flight through the cosmic music"!

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 21:50 (twenty years ago)

yo Galkin, what is the 2x12" tracklisting for volume 2?

and Geeta, you have a point:

get up/say what
dance with me
casual friday
sunplus (dfa remix)
give me every little thing

i too would rather any of these substituted into the compilations. but the way i see it, these comps seems to be their "guns for hire" collection for the non-DJ, non-music critic, non-P2P using white belt + iPod set.

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 22:34 (twenty years ago)

per Galkin: "This will be every 3rd party (i.e. non-DFA Records) remix we have done."
i like that they use the absolute most ridiculous pictures of themselves for it. tho this is the best one:
http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/2331/979/1600/dfa.jpg

imbidimts, Wednesday, 5 April 2006 22:43 (twenty years ago)

I was surprised by how much I like this! I think the Chemical Brothers remix and the Hot Chip remix are up there with the Goldfrapp remix as some of the best stuff they've ever done. And there's not really a duff track on there at all, the Radio 4 remix screams "archetypal nu disco-punk" but that's because it sort of defined the archetype.

Maybe it's because I hadn't been keeping up with all the more recent remixes as they were coming out, so it's more of a pleasant shock for me.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 22:47 (twenty years ago)

I doubtless will be with Tim and Matos on this one, ie, "I haven't heard much of this, therefore let me enjoy it as it stands."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 22:50 (twenty years ago)

I think the Holiday Mix made me really warmly disposed towards DFA again, it reminded me that disco is still their first and last true love.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 22:52 (twenty years ago)

That would make a lot more sense if you replace "disco" with all the bands that were mentioned on "losing my edge".

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 22:58 (twenty years ago)

I heard you gave up wakeboarding for snowboarding

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 23:01 (twenty years ago)

Well maybe not James Murphy then. I dunno I think that the disco core is a lot stronger on DFA remixes than on LCD or other artist projects on the record label (obv. this goes without saying for D&G, Black Dice etc.). Like, "The Boxer" sounds psychedelic, but more in a balearic 808 State way than a psych-rock way or whatevs.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 23:09 (twenty years ago)

I have a question but would rather not start a new thread:

on that awesome Deceptacon remix, you know at the end when it goes

Edit.
DEEeee.. EFFFff.. AAAyyy..
RRRrrremix.

f-f-f-f-fresh

is that James Murphy's vocodered voice or mebbe a Speak 'n Spell? that part is so dope.

Wrinklepaws (Wrinklepaws), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 23:56 (twenty years ago)

asking for: get up/say what, dance with me, casual friday, sunplus (dfa remix) and give me every little thing to be "substituted" for the included tracks is just insane. you realize if we actually did that, this entire thread would be complaining how every single one of those tracks has been released on CD already, most on the very last compilation we put out? What would be the point?

we actually tried to make this a double CD but it would have been way too expensive with all the 3rd party licensing, royalties etc.

GALKIN (GALKIN), Thursday, 6 April 2006 00:04 (twenty years ago)

WHATTTTTTTTT. i need to hear this!!

here's a YSI of the lindstrom & prins thomas mix of "call me mr. telephone" ... incidentally, i've never heard the original! (this file plays mostly through the left channel - not sure if that's on purpose, but it's been like that whenever i've come across it. still kills!)

rajeev (rajeev), Thursday, 6 April 2006 00:08 (twenty years ago)

Deceptacon voice over: that is Tim. The EDIT things came from listening to Janet Jackson, i forget which track. The FRESH thing came from watching that old rap show Graffiti Rock by MIchael Holman too many times. They keep rolling in these amazing gfx during the show that say "Fresh!".

GALKIN (GALKIN), Thursday, 6 April 2006 00:11 (twenty years ago)

I think it's "All 4 U" which has Janet's totally ace, totally gratuitous "EDIT!" announcement.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 6 April 2006 00:15 (twenty years ago)

what mix of The Hand That Feeds is included on CD 2?

biz, Thursday, 6 April 2006 00:16 (twenty years ago)

Isn't the Janet Jackson "Edit!" from the skit on Rhythm Nation right before "Escapade"?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 6 April 2006 00:17 (twenty years ago)

for NIN: the 12" vinyl vocal version. i guess they had a promo cd with other alternate takes they did but they are not that different, i dont think...they actually released a 9" record of the remix too! Man that Trent guy gets anything he wants.

GALKIN (GALKIN), Thursday, 6 April 2006 00:33 (twenty years ago)

asking for: get up/say what, dance with me, casual friday, sunplus (dfa remix) and give me every little thing to be "substituted" for the included tracks is just insane. you realize if we actually did that, this entire thread would be complaining how every single one of those tracks has been released on CD already, most on the very last compilation we put out? What would be the point?

ha ha! well, i wasn't asking for any of those tracks to be substituted; that was just my off-the-cuff assessment of the dfa tunes with the best vocals.

and agreed with tim on the dfa holiday mix 2005 being pretty great. if anyone hasn't realized this yet, you can buy the whole mix for 99 cents on itunes, which sure beats buying it in a shop.

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 6 April 2006 00:55 (twenty years ago)

i don't hear an ounce of disco in that holiday 2005 mix unless techno is the new disco?

team jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 6 April 2006 01:01 (twenty years ago)

even when I bought it from a shop the holiday mix was pretty cheap. it did have this, though:

http://zorlac.ca/images/copycontrol_logo.gif

luckily that doesn't work, haha!

haitch (haitch), Thursday, 6 April 2006 01:02 (twenty years ago)

thx, rajeev, this is great! esp. when valerie dore's vox finally come in

i can gmail you the orig. if you want, don't want to clutter this thread with non-dfa-related mp3-files and such

joseph (joseph), Thursday, 6 April 2006 02:44 (twenty years ago)

that'd be great, joseph, i'll shoot you an email.

rajeev (rajeev), Thursday, 6 April 2006 03:11 (twenty years ago)

"just like we (breakdown)" wld be my pick from this - not really my favourites . . . hope the 2nd pack will give the jnr snr rmx some more exposure - maybe my favourite dfa rmx EVAH. though as soon as I've got cash (& a few of them are released), there's a whole lot of nu dfa stuff I'm really excited about - the d&g 12", shit robot & the hot chip rmx!

etc, Thursday, 6 April 2006 06:36 (twenty years ago)

"we actually tried to make this a double CD but it would have been way too expensive with all the 3rd party licensing, royalties etc"

thanks GALKIN this explain a lot, pity to have to wait about 6 months for volume 2.
by the way any possibility of a DFA compilation vol.3? you know, those 2 before are some of my fave records ever, and also were great for people like me who don't have a turntable (yah it can happen you vinyl feticist!)

francesco brunetti, Thursday, 6 April 2006 06:41 (twenty years ago)

i'm pretty crazy about that 'just like we (breakdown)' mix (rollerskating jam called dfa), and get a kick out of that blues xplosion mix if only cuz hearing it in the midst of other stuff the first time i heard it i thought 'i-i-is this jon fucking spencer???'. lot of stuff on there that's tired or i'm tired of or both (guess which is both).

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 6 April 2006 06:52 (twenty years ago)

Question for Galkin: did Albarn revoice "Dare" for the remix because I don't think he was on the original, was he?

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 6 April 2006 22:07 (twenty years ago)

my friends actually feature on the cover. albeit with their eyes blackedout

ladyintheradiator (ladyinradiator), Thursday, 6 April 2006 23:38 (twenty years ago)

JoB: Those are his vocals. I think they may have pushed them more upfront or something. I cannot remember the original version of the song and am too lazy to go find it! But they used whatever they were given and they may have just fucked with it a bit, or taken off all effects/reverb etc and changed it around....

GALKIN (GALKIN), Friday, 7 April 2006 00:38 (twenty years ago)

If you listen to the original on headphones you can hear Albarn's vocals in the background.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Friday, 7 April 2006 01:38 (twenty years ago)

Black Leotard Front,
the Juan Maclean, &
Pixeltan

best things on DFA. particularly BLF and Pixeltan.

more releases, please!

these are the groups that seem to have a more unique sound. maybe i'm wrong, but they're just really on. you can hear it, too. in the way that a band has a certain energy in their earliest collaborations. just a feel that other thigns don't have.

and can someone explain "Far From Home" to me? i think this is awful.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Friday, 7 April 2006 02:52 (twenty years ago)

it's great! it sounds like the spaceship is taking off to carry tiga back to the planet sexor!

haitch (haitch), Friday, 7 April 2006 03:44 (twenty years ago)

haha haitch stole my answer!

geeta (geeta), Friday, 7 April 2006 03:56 (twenty years ago)

Galkin looks exactly like my former weed man in Cgy - hay mane. Oh, and he's a certified gold dude of dudes for going out his way to keep me from tripping all over myself and landing in all sorts of industry trouble last year...fuckin solid dude. DFA dudes are coq-certified for life simply by sheer universal bro-ness, y'eeerd.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Friday, 7 April 2006 04:29 (twenty years ago)

galkin, sorry for drunk babbling at you at the sxsw pitchfork show. i got like an hour of sleep and was partying with modular pav which meant trouble, and i had a bottle of champagne for breakfast.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 7 April 2006 05:14 (twenty years ago)

rajeev I sent you a rip I did my self of Lindstrom remix of 'Call Me Mr Telephone" It's sounds better.

Jacobs (LolVStein), Friday, 7 April 2006 05:35 (twenty years ago)
