How come nobody ever talks about Tuning Spork here, except Aaron since his return.

Isn't it like, one of the best German labels???

(I think Vahid might like it too)

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

I mean V might like it, if he heard it, if he hasn't already, that is.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

I feel a bit left out because I haven't had much luck tracking down stuff on Tuning Spork and Mobilee and all the other hip new labels.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

Tuning Spork is good. Some of the Contexerrior stuff is amazing too.

rchinn (rchinn), Thursday, 6 April 2006 07:53 (nineteen years ago)

Whenever my wallet recovers from New York I intend to buy a crappy mp3 player with a line out so I can record my vinyl to mp3. When this happens I promise I will YSI a load of Tuning Spork and Mobilee stuff.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 April 2006 09:16 (nineteen years ago)

full Mobilee back catalogue is available at beatport.
Tuning Spork: I downloaded Dan Curtin's "Tricks Pt.1" and I believe they are putting more stuff in there ...

nocure, Thursday, 6 April 2006 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

i have the discography :/

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 6 April 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

Will I be beaten up for honestly assuming that Tuning Spork was a meta-joke blog devoted to deconstructing TuningFork's deconstructions of PFM?

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Thursday, 6 April 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

I thought they were based in Amsterdam, not Germany? it used to be based in Philly but Jay Haze moved.

yuengling participle (rotten03), Thursday, 6 April 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

Minikool Remixes [Turning Spork 11] is good stuff.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Thursday, 6 April 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

They are based in Berlin.

Their website features a flash game where you can slap a raver too.

rchinn (rchinn), Thursday, 6 April 2006 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

ooh, i see the original b - minikool is downloadable from textone.
http://www.textone.org/index.php?fuseaction=releases.show_release&rel_id=txtn009

Good Dog (Good Dog), Thursday, 6 April 2006 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

have i talked about TS or is that another aaron? anyways, i like both of the krak street boyz eps on Tuning Spork Family Affair, and the Guido Schneider record and remix on the parent label. i am checking all of these releases out via WAS, so I am tending to shy away from the vocal tracks as I dislike to buy vocals without hearing the entire record. the early tuning sporks, back when the label was in philly, are deep tech-house. its an interesting contrast from that to Bearback!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 6 April 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

tim - "hip" labels on beatport:
cadenza
mobilee
vakant
WIR
minus
get physical
lan muziz

plus most of:
bpitch
playhouse
trapez & ltd
traum
mbf & mbf ltd

(and there is probably more... that is off the top of my head)
or did you mean on vinyl? i have a hard time getting records in the us sometimes, but i use beatport, etc., to figure out what i want. there are no shops in DC so i cant physically flip through any of this stuff.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 6 April 2006 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I meant on vinyl - listening in vinyl stores (whether I buy or not) is the predominant way I keep track of all this stuff.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 6 April 2006 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

Vahid focuses on quirky, yet grooving dancefloor material that is avant-garde and tongue-in-cheek at the same time.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 6 April 2006 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

the only thing i've heard off this label so far is "earth browser", which of course i really liked. guido schneider = hottnessss

i'm super-curious to hear everything else on the label. i like jay haze almost as much as jay tripwire! who is this "architect" character, though??

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 6 April 2006 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

serious, does that minikool hit the spot or not?

jay haze = rotten in my book :(

Good Dog (Good Dog), Thursday, 6 April 2006 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

I love everything I've heard by Jay Haze (plus Guido Schneider, Vahid I restarted that Bugnology thread to talk about him and his new album which I haven't heard yet). What was Jay's album from last year like, peoples?

I realise I have heard a couple of Tuning Spork tracks, that Bearback "Funky Voodoo Mama" track is pretty good. And "Earth Browser" yes!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 6 April 2006 22:07 (nineteen years ago)

tim, which Jay Haze is good? I haven't liked anything I've heard.

My fav Gudio Schneider is Moesko from Unterwegs Mit Guido Schneider (Poker Flat)

I have a low tolerance for plip-plop!

Good Dog (Good Dog), Thursday, 6 April 2006 22:12 (nineteen years ago)

My fave Jay Haze is probably "Socrates Rules" by Robag Wruhme Vs Jay Haze.

Is there a Tuning Spork sound and if so what is it? The only record of theirs I was ever compelled to buy was Bearback's Tuning Spork Family Affair 01.

JoB (JoB), Thursday, 6 April 2006 22:22 (nineteen years ago)

I like "Appreciate" on the M.A.N.D.Y. Body Language mix, "I Can Love You" on Sven Vath's Sound of the Sixth Season and his remix of Mambotur's "Vamos Viendo" on Tobi Neumann's Pass Your Bedtime mix.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 6 April 2006 22:24 (nineteen years ago)

Referring to Jay Haze just there.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 6 April 2006 22:24 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, I'm listening to these now. Sometimes I don't know what I've been hearing!

Good Dog (Good Dog), Thursday, 6 April 2006 22:34 (nineteen years ago)

ok. there is something about jay haze i don't like. i am not a critic; I can't be more specific than that sorry.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Thursday, 6 April 2006 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

not personally, mind. I'm sure he is a nice fellow. Just his music. It's like I can't get into Lawrence, even though I oughta.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Thursday, 6 April 2006 22:54 (nineteen years ago)

Hip labels NOT on beatport:
Perlon
Tuning Spork
Liebe*Detail
Hello Repeat
Kitsuné
.....

nocure, Friday, 7 April 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

and Kompakt of course. oh wait, they arent really hip anymore ;}

fez, Friday, 7 April 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

However ... WIR with just one record out is hip ;-)

nocure, Friday, 7 April 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

isnt Wir affiliated with Treibstoff? that would make them insta-hip of course!

fez, Friday, 7 April 2006 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

But Minilogue is Son Kite which is unhip hippie trance. can the same man be both hip and unhip?

Good Dog (Good Dog), Friday, 7 April 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

They moved from Progressive Goa Trance et al to Traum Schallplatten ... not a bad move ;-)
Well, also James Holden didn't have the best of the startups

Tuning Spork, Liebe Detail and Hello Repeat can all be previewed at WAS.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Saturday, 8 April 2006 04:00 (nineteen years ago)

the architect is jay haze under a pseudonym. i didn't know he was from philly. i like contexterrior more than tuning spork, but i think that's only because i've heard more of the contexterrior releases (and because i like weirdo shit). ricardo vs. jay - "prefer summer" - shimmery and like being in the desert except for fat bass, jay & robag - "socrates" is so good (minimal to the point of nothing and falling apart, but still a total groover), mister e minimal is weirdo shit that reminds of very early trapez = great!) jay haze's stuff is often wide-angle....opposite of navel gazing. i'd imagine his vocal tracks are bit much for some, but that he's from philly completely makes sense in that regard (philly soul). my last few mixes on the "djs post your mixes for download" thread have some jay haze stuff on them.

i like guido schneider a lot, too! his remix of taksi's "regeneschauer" is insane (it's on that berghain mix i was going on about on the villalobos thread). it sounds like his other stuff (total rhythmic disorientation and immersion), but it's way more straight and dancefloor-oriented. nice change of pace.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Saturday, 8 April 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

also good and on contexterrior (i was just looking at this record) - the no compromises mini-comp. "don't give in if you are doing the right thing" on the center label. jay haze/dapayk/matt john/fark...looks like there's a part two out now.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Saturday, 8 April 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

Friends Of Tomorrow is worth checking for people who like this stuff too.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 8 April 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

for me personally he is one of the best producers over the years. he has been involved in soo many different projects, and all are gold to me. his labels are not only new hip labels people. his labels have helped to set a new standard and change thigns. also he makes a free internet label called textone www.textone.org where he released some of the best stars of now before anyone heard of them. this is not someone who is new. i got his first record 7 years ago. his style is diverse and so is the style of his labels. so for those who dont know about this producer keep your ears open cause he is gonna tear up the place from all genre directions.

joncobb, Tuesday, 11 April 2006 12:42 (nineteen years ago)

it's OK Jay, no need to be so insecure

Did anyone else know that Contexterrior have downloadable mp3 podcasts on their website?

The Michael Ho one from June is fucking awesome, a fantastic showcase of the current Tuning Spork sound.

Vahid might argue that this is just a slightly abstracted take on the Music For Freaks sound (albeit different to Perlon which fits the same description perhaps), and he might be right - but this is also probably why it is so good!

I wonder what Ronan will make of my dastardly implication.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 25 September 2006 05:55 (nineteen years ago)

The Argenis Brito live set is also fabulous - a Luciano homage that is better than Luciano usually is! There's this brilliantly deep track halfway through that is like this one loop that could just go on forever... and then maracas come in...

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 25 September 2006 07:21 (nineteen years ago)

This kind of music always makes me think: how anorexic the line b/w captivation and boredom. This stays on the right side of the line, but often with Mobilee-style stuff I'm thinking "wow i love this groove....zzzzzzz......oh this bit is gorgeous.....zzzzzzz"

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 25 September 2006 07:23 (nineteen years ago)

I'm gonna keep bumping this thread until someone downloads that Michael Ho mix.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 05:31 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's a bit more meandering than MFF, the beats are never quite as bumping either...but I can see the connection as regards sense of humour and stuff.

The Falco Brocksieper one before the Michael Ho is so good too....

I will check out that Michael Ho mix.

"Fuckpony House of Haze from the forthcoming album"

Does this mean what I think it means? I'm almost afraid to hear a follow-up sans Sammim.

Tim F, Monday, 7 May 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

Well, Jay would say he made most of the first record except for two tracks!

I've heard one track from the new album and I liked it, it was very lurid old school Chicago house with a hiphop sort of vocal. Not really like what I'd play but pretty cool nonetheless.

The new one is done I think, pretty much.

Ronan, Monday, 7 May 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

the jay haze tuning spork mix from last year is still hairs-on-the-back-of-the-neck great

like superlongevity 2 levels of sickness

creme1, Friday, 25 May 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

also there is a new tuning spork, blackwell "you are now about to enter the twilight zone" or something, how is it?

creme1, Friday, 25 May 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

the Blackwell is nice, simple acid house.

I still think "Set The Limit" is amazing.

the last three or so releases on this label have been stunning, so glad its back on form. how great is the michal ho album? and i love the rhadoo mix of "takeaway". in fact every remix on that 12" is the shit.

r1o natsume, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

haven't heard this yet. actually i've been sleeping on fabric mixes for the whole year for some reason.

is it in the typical haze twitchy percussion style? i could go some of that.

Hey Hey It's A Blackface Incident (haitch), Thursday, 8 October 2009 02:44 (sixteen years ago)

half twitchy, half dubby. big chunks of it are not too far off from my beloved classic / MFF template of boompty house but with a lot more, uh, space in between the beats, if that makes any sense. but then big chunks of it are not.

i dunno, just listen to it. it's fantastic.
