Can anyone help suggest any ideas/anywhere to buy CD Storage systems/cases

I've just moved to a new flat, my idea originally was to build purpose built shelving to the walls to store all my CD's (and books).
Unfortunately the walls are not capable of holding that kind of shelve/weight so I need an alternative option.

Can anyone help with either ideas of how to/or places (in the UK) to buy large free standing CD storage equipment? Everything I see seems to hold 100/200 CD's max. I'm looking for something that will hold approx 4000 CD's, preferably tall/tower kind of system to maximise space.

I'm based in London if anyone knows anywhere local....

Thanks in advance

I'd have thought Ikea's modular, freestanding shelving system would be a good bet, with some simple modification (like buying more shelves per unit!).

This is "Billy" and is £168 - I recon that looks pretty easily adaptable and should hold several hundred, maybe more. I have standard book shelves and stack the CDs two-high, with empty casette cases behind the bottom row so that they're not flush with the top and thuse easier to get out. I keep non-jewelcases separate to keep it unifroma nd stop them being damaged.

A shelving unit would be nice though :/

i went the ikea route a few years back. bought 3 tall bookcase type units that had adjustable shelving. get down there, there will be something you can customise i am sure.

i did see an advert in the back of this month Mojo as well, tho for some storage units that looked quite good, mind.

I got mine custom built, which was a sound investment, I feel. Though now, way back in the recesses of my mind, I'm wondering about the possibility of, like others on ILM, just storing the damn things on hard drive instead.

to denote storage/stacking methods.

I spent years going over different types of shelves until I decided to just break down and build my own. There's an initial outlay cost for tools and varnish, but after that the costs of building your own are minimal.

Building your own shelves are not that difficult to do, even if you've never picked up a saw before (though last time I did it, I had the lumber store cut it for me). You get to maximize your wall space and have great show off material whenever anyone askes you where you bought your great CD shelves.

Racks and Stands has a great deal right now on all of their album shelvings. Free shipping. That's huge when ordering items like these.

Was going to post a new thread but found this... I'm on my THIRD CD rack and this one's full. I was wondering if anyone had any more personal recommendations for CD shelves; I have about 200 so far and am acquiring more constantly (discs, not shelves). And it can't be too expensive.

Can anyone suggest a storage solution for about 1,500 CDs in jewel cases? I have a spinning tower that holds about 1,100 but is completely full, and about 400 CDs strewn about the living room in jewel cases, stacked on furniture, etc.

Looking more so for a shelving solution as I don't want to get rid of the jewel cases.

Any ideas?

Anyone know how many CDs the IKEA BILLY Corner Combination would hold?

I decided on using these Extra Tall Storage Towers from Argos when I moved house and had a chance to start afresh in terms of CD storage.

They're very tall and thin, and the modular capability to add more when needed or move them individually was one of the main pulls in choosing them, along with the price.

I have 10 in total (I bought them when they were on sale and got as many delivered in one go as they had available) but have only built up 7 so far, with the others in reserve for adding as my collection expands. They look good lined up next to each other in my opinion (impressively imposing), though on my carpeted uneven floor I really need to work on fixing them to the wall to keep them straight (I'm just too lazy so far).

I recommend them, though building them up can be a bit of a pain in the arse.

I've pretty much decided that I am just going to keep my CD collection the size it is, and get rid of old things I don't listen to anymore when I want to add to it.

I just filled up my third gigantor case logic binder yesterday. 1500 in jewel cases is absolute lunacy.

i had shelves made, seven feet high and two feet across, when i was at the height of my overgrown cd collection. They were actually pretty cheap, I think $100 each. I've whittled that collection down by almost 50% since though so I'm about to be left with a useless shelf.

i'm curious about what people do w/ cd-rs...i have hundreds of cds in drawers, and then hundreds of cd-rs of stuff i've copied or downloaded...so now in order to find somtehing you have to know if it's cd, or cd-r, etc...

nerve_pylon, Sunday, 3 August 2008 18:35 (seventeen years ago)

I tossed most of mine. Figure I can always download or rip a copy somewhere down the road if I really want it hear it.

Mark Rich@rdson, Sunday, 3 August 2008 18:39 (seventeen years ago)

M@rk, i've been doing the add one/subtract one routine for a couple years whenever i can. Down to about 1,500 CDs but no doubt i've owned between 3,000 and 4,000 in my lifetime, so i've gotten rid of over half of my collection already.

How big is your collection? & how do you currently store it?

stephen, Sunday, 3 August 2008 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

i've said this elsewhere recently but i think you might as well just stick the cds in a box in a closet. i've also been copying cds to my computer and making mp3 discs with 12-15 albums on each one and selling the cds. i think i'm going to keep maybe 100 cds in the end, ones that have some nostalgic value or are from my 8-10 favorite bands.

omar little, Sunday, 3 August 2008 19:42 (seventeen years ago)

Stephen - I think I have about that many, give or take maybe 200. I only keep CDs on a shelf if all the art is complete, so with all the promos I have, that means I have several hundred in paper sleeves tucked away in small boxes. The rest I keep on six different shelves of varying size that are all kind of piled on top of each other-- though they are loosely alphabetized.

what are some good classy options for the storage of CDs/covers without the jewel cases?

Expensive but could be a good long-term investment: http://www.can-am.ca/

eh my goal here is to reduce space usage, those don't really help with that

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 4 January 2010 16:55 (sixteen years ago)

This is the only solution you need:

http://www.jazzloft.com/p-34281-space-saving-cd-sleeves.aspx

Have started getting rid of all my jewel cases in favour of these puppies. The space saving is incredible. Yes, you can still see the spine. And Alex Ross likes them, so /thread.

Ooh, I like the look of those things.

eleven years pass...

I got Venture Horizon revolving towers because I needed to save space and they've worked out great. They come in many different sizes, but they go up as high as 1600+ CD's per tower, which is what I have. Instead of wallpapering a room with shelving, everything is tucked away in corners that were otherwise bare.

Only down side is the shelves themselves - the weight of a full shelf will cause them to sag/bow over time. Easy solution seems to be to flip the shelves. They nearly flatten out immediately and gradually correct themselves. After the sag from the first year of usage, I'm guessing every six months if I want to minimize bowing altogether. A little cumbersome but easier than rotating tires or a mattress.
