atomic wasted, Thursday, 6 April 2006 10:29 (nineteen years ago)

Clicking and viewing your shitty MySpace page is far too much effort to be wasted here in our hectic modern world.

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Thursday, 6 April 2006 10:44 (nineteen years ago)

... and yet relentlessly posting unfunny crap to a messageboard doesn't appear to be too much effort. Strange old world isn't it, eh Esteban?

Internet trolling is a popular hobby these days, one without the time wasting of creating model train scenery or waiting fucking hours before the fish start to "bite".

Ah come on, is there any city more mind-bogglingly tedious than Adelaide? Perth maybe.

Do Your Worst is a great name for a band.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 6 April 2006 12:35 (nineteen years ago)

can't hear the songs, but i like the drawring.

eedd, Thursday, 6 April 2006 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

Good band name, decent guitar sound (might want to filter out some of the amp static), the drums are recorded way too hot. Unremarkable songwriting. Never ever describe yourself as "grunge" - this is what unimpressed critics will lob at you.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Thursday, 6 April 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

I think you sound ok, but sounds like you need a year or two of seasoning. There's some potential there.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 6 April 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

What abbadavid said, also the vocals are mixed way too low.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 6 April 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

sounds like you need a year or two of seasoning.

Actually, I could have guessed that just by the fact that you're posting a "rate my band" thread on a message board.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 6 April 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

you sound like B52s. Nirvana. Blur. Sebadoh. Frank Black. And others.

youth problem (YouthProblem), Thursday, 6 April 2006 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

You sound better than that Craigslist ad band we made fun of last week, I'll give you that.

darin (darin), Thursday, 6 April 2006 20:55 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe, but Epsi1on Rising were striving for auric utopia and you really can't ask for much more than that.

I like some of the guitar stuff, too -- sounds a little like your friend Coxon when he's in his sloppy mode, or else Beatnik Filmstars, who've done a whole lot of the stuff you're doing here with guitar, vocal, and recording technique. Joseph's right about the drums, though: recorded too hot, and also too muddy (the kick's the real problem), which actually makes listening a little uncomfortable.

The songwriting is the problem, though. It has good energy and can sound both cool and "convincing" in lots of spots, but in the end all the songs are hitting the exactly same kind of groove and not really changing from it. They all have basically the same hook and vocal delivery, too, to the point where I'd have to listen to them a lot more times to even be able to tell you which was which. There are some actually quite cool rhythmic variations in them, but the fact that you just do power-chord stuff and don't change your vocal delivery much keeps you from ever doing much more in any song than what the first thiry seconds have already pinned down. Like on "Em Girl" the guitars actually shift into what could be a nice chorus or break, but you keep singing the same thing around the same notes, so that change-up doesn't accomplish very much. "Cold White Death" tries and fails on that front, too.

So umm these are alright for home recording and everything, but if you really want people listening you'll have to:

(a) stop trying to brag about not knowing the recording software and start getting all the sounds to fit right -- the "I don't know what I'm doing" schtick is also lame because you actually have this sounding half-listenable enough to indicate that you're putting some work into it;

(b) write a whole lot more variation into your songs instead of trading on pure energy -- you don't have to do verse/chorus but you could use some dynamics and changes;

(c) in the interest of that, work on expanding your guitar technique and broadening the palette of guitar sounds you're using so it's not always the same power-chord clunk and occasional one-note up-the-neck squeal -- you can get away with being aesthetically single-minded, fine, but you're gonna need to change it up at least for the occasional intro or middle-eight or something, otherwise it's the same damn song over and over. Same goes for vocals, too -- even if you're gonna sing rock and not really do melodies, you still have to know how to express different things and work different rhythms and types of delivery; and

(d) listen to some Beatnik Filmstars, cause you'd probably like them a lot.

your music isn't too bad, but you need to do stuff to make it gooder.
