How in the world would you compare the two? That's like asking, "who's the singer supreme--Diamanda Galas or the Tuva Throat Singers?" If the question were posed in seriousness, would either of those two be in the final running, outside of some semi-esoterica bent?

I guess the answer, if there is one, should be "neither."

Only have heard Ribot with David Poe, Chocolate Genius and David Sylvian. I like his playing...Wouldn't classify him as "guitar hero" though. That term usually has negative connotations.

i saw ribot with his cuban band here last year. he came out with greying hair and looked like he has been up all night. he had this messy pile of papers in his hand.. it was solos and melodies written out in pencil and he layed them out in front of him all un organized and messy. he was sight reading these fucking solos he wrote like the night before doing all these radical variations on the album material. man that night kicked my ass.

I'd never call him a "guitar hero supreme" because AFT's music transcends technique. What comes across to me is the emotion of a piece - the stories within each melody translate from the tone of his notes or the inflections of his voice.

Simply stated, Ali Farka is a Master -- why even attempt to make comparison beyond that?
