I just received this. Really sad news. Does anyone have any more details/news?

> Arthur Lee from Love has recently been
> diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
> (ALL) and has undergone 3 weeks of aggressive
> chemotherapy. Doctors are hopeful for a full
> recovery, but Arthur still faces more chemo,
> extensive hospital stays, and a possible bone
> marrow transplant. Arthur Lee has no health
> insurance to cover his growing (over
> $100,000+) medical bills.
>
> Arthur Lee (Love) is a man larger than life.
> A flamboyant artist with a trail of myth and
> mythology that follows him like a purple
> feathered boa. His band Love was the first
> rock band signed to Electra, and Arthur is
> responsible for talking Jac Holtzman into
> signing the Doors. Before all this, in 1964,
> Arthur gave his friend, an unknown Jimi
> Hendrix, his first appearance on record (the
> Arthur penned My Diary, by Rosa Lee Brooks).
> Love's third recording, "Forever Changes", is
> still widely considered to be one of the great
> rock n roll discs of all time. Love were true
> artists, but not "careerist". They preferred
> living together in "the castle" near Griffith
> Park, to life on the road. Arthur even turned
> down invitations to perform at the Monterrey
> Pop Festival and Woodstock.
>
> In the 90's Arthur spent eight years behind
> bars for "allegedly" shooting off a gun in
> his apartment. When he was released, he
> wasted no time getting back to the road and
> his music. During the past four years, Arthur
> has performed "Forever Changes" to sold out
> audiences and fantastic reviews throughout
> Europe and the United States, backed by the
> local group Baby Lemonade, and a string and
> horn section. Just when he thought his bad
> times were finally over, he learned he was
> sick.
>
> To help cover his medical expenses, Spaceland
> Productions, Bruce Solar from The Agency
> Group, and Mark Linn from Delmore Recording
> Society are producing a benefit concert /
> tribute for Arthur. We would like to extend a
> warm invitation to those bands and performers
> who want to be part of this benefit to honor
> one of the greatest singer / songwriters of
> our time.
>
> The concert will be held in late May / early
> June; we are looking at venues of all sizes:
> The Avalon, El Rey, Disney Hall, or Greek

:( This is sad. I wish him the best of luck in his recovery.

musically (musically), Friday, 7 April 2006 02:09 (twenty years ago)

This is the first I've heard of this, and I'd like to wish him the best of luck too.

Lotta Continua (Damian), Friday, 7 April 2006 10:09 (twenty years ago)

This is the sort of tribute gig they should do over here too.

A lot of UK artists wouldn't mean zip over there, but owe their careers (or at least a fair proportion of them) to Forever Changes.

I was going to list some, but heck. Be easier to list ones that don't.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 7 April 2006 10:15 (twenty years ago)

Oh here goes anyway.

Doves. Primal Scream. Martin Carr/Boo Radleys. Belle. Sebastian.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 7 April 2006 10:18 (twenty years ago)

and those scouser junkies.

25 yr old slacker cokehead (Enrique), Friday, 7 April 2006 10:21 (twenty years ago)

Will they pull in an audience? Got to go for the bottom line here.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 7 April 2006 10:23 (twenty years ago)

Robert Plant

Lotta Continua (Damian), Friday, 7 April 2006 10:25 (twenty years ago)

I don't really believe that those bands "owe their career" to Arthur and, even if they did, so what? I hope Arthur recovers, he's probably the coolest guy I've ever seen on stage in my life.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 7 April 2006 10:25 (twenty years ago)

Well, you answer your own question, in a way.

It would be nice if they mobilised themselves to help him recover.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 7 April 2006 10:29 (twenty years ago)

This really sucks. I'd been hearing rumors about a new band that formed around him in Memphis (he was born there, after all) with Jack 08l1v1on and Al1cja from the Lost Sounds! Probably won't ever see a stage :(((((

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Friday, 7 April 2006 14:00 (twenty years ago)

Arthur Lee hugged me completely out of the blue after a Love gig - it wasn't wierd or creepy. He was saying goodbye to everyone who went to the show, I put my hand out hoping to shake it - and he grabbed me and hugged me. That guy is fantastic. I will write a song about it and give it to anyone who wants to sell it.

xpost yeah that's Alicja Trout.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Friday, 7 April 2006 14:55 (twenty years ago)

there's a great feature in the new Mojo about the revivified Love

i am not a nugget (stevie), Friday, 7 April 2006 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Alicja Trout looks like a fully grown Alice Grout.

Who knows?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 7 April 2006 15:00 (twenty years ago)

I've had the pleasure of seeing the revived Love with Arthur three times over the past few years and it's always been a great show, the 'Forever Changes' concert especially. I saw him early last year with Johnny Echols for the first time and he was in very fine spirits indeed.

Arthur will beat this. Get well, Arhur Lee.

yer mam! (yer mam!), Friday, 7 April 2006 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 7 April 2006 23:20 (twenty years ago)

joan vich (joan vich), Saturday, 8 April 2006 16:56 (twenty years ago)

hello, I used to be in Zappa's Gto's Girl Group way back.and spent time with Arthur recently. I use to go wuth him in the late 1990's.I was married to Shuggie Otis and I have a great son Lucky Otis who would like to this tribute. I am sorry this has happened to Arthur.

Miss Mercy, Tuesday, 11 April 2006 19:46 (twenty years ago)

Hi Again, This is Miss Mercy here.Last night I called Arthur and talked to him.He was at the hospital for something. He sounded better than he has in along time.Memphis is his home and he is living in his house that was his mothers. He sounds clear and positive, looking forward to playing with his new group. He said he was inspired by something on TV he watched, a young by with leukemia, that beat it and was singing a song or something like that.He is glad to hear about people interested in him and about the benefits and hopes my son Lucky Otis gets to play.Arthur and Lucky were in discussions about performing together before Arthur left for home. That's where it is at.Miss Mercy

Miss Mercy, Friday, 14 April 2006 13:25 (twenty years ago)

thanks for the updates, Miss Mercy!

patita (patita), Friday, 14 April 2006 13:28 (twenty years ago)

Not sure how I missed this thread.

Awful news...Saw them about a year ago with the line up including Johnny Echols. One of the best gigs I've ever seen. He actually split from Baby Lemonade about 9 months ago after refusing to go on tour with them due to vibes being not right etc. The band claimed at the time that he was impossible to work with and needed medical help for some sort of undisclosed mental illness...they then proceeded to go out on tour as 'The Love group' with Echols in tow although he left shortly afterwards. Needless to say, the split with both arthur and Johnny was pretty acrimonious. Suprising therefore, to see Baby Lemonade offering to back anyone up who wants to play this tribute thingie.

Get well soon Arthur.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 11 May 2006 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

xpost well, at least they put the acrimonies aside to work on the fundraiser. Seeing as how they have earned a fair bit from being "love" for the past few years, it's not such a bad thing to do that.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 11 May 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

Shocked to hear some comment on Arthurs illness in passing on radio 2 in the UK. How did I miss that? I'm sure he'll pull through, saw him a couple of times in the last few years playing live and exceeded all my expectations, better than when I first heard forever changes aged 15 in the early ninetees, and I never expected that. Went with my now wife to the Forever Changes tour 2 days before the birth of my son. Sure that gig forced him out. Fucking magician, maverick. Lets hope the bills get paid, and that he gets some realisation of what he means to so many and that he gets to enjoy that and a long and healthy life for many years to come. What can we do to help? Feel pretty useless writing some crappy words to an anonymous text page, but felt it necessary. Why do some miserable old bastard rockers get all the props, arthur should be larging it over everyone. Guess that ain't his style, and his modesty only adds to the great mans appeal.

Rich Hughes, Sunday, 14 May 2006 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

anonymous text page?

But still, yes.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 15 May 2006 12:32 (nineteen years ago)
