Erm... Why not? It's not illegal if your willing to pay, and providing it's a legitimate site

www.allofmp3.com has to be the best on price and flexibility. Not really for obscure/rare I guess, but that depends on your distinction of such.

Yeah it's Russian and for awhile I was wary of it for fear of soviet block revolutionaries stormin' me door offering all manner of dubious delights:

"Could you look after a package for us?"

"How big?"

"Oh kinda coffin size really. Not that it is. Hah! Hah!"

However, it checks out and I've been using it for over a year now, with no hassle.

I don't think those russian sites are legit at all. May as well do it illegally.

We plan on offering rare digital only downloads soon:

the pretty awesome chicago-based reissue-oriented record-label Numero Group has something they call the Digital Dig:

http://www.numerogroup.com/dig_main.php

They consider it sorta loose ends, like a cutting room floor.

My record label has been debating doing something similar for a long time, but in this day and age of thorough and great (and yes, illegal) mp3 blogs, it's a bit hard to justify.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 7 April 2006 15:33 (twenty years ago)

i mean, easy to justify in an ETHICAL sense, hard to justify in a MAKE MONEY sense! But it's coming...maybe.

so - can one buy perlon stuff anywhere online yet?

toby (tsg20), Friday, 7 April 2006 15:54 (twenty years ago)

I dunno but it should also be mentioned here that Warpmart is a huge resource for legal downloads.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 7 April 2006 16:02 (twenty years ago)

also, NYC's minimal techno faves Wolf and Lamb, who've gained attention for throwing after-hours loft parties and such, are selling tracks on their site:

http://wolflambmusic.com/music/

In addition, they sell the tracks as MP3s...or the Ableton Live native files for you to mix with and edit their tracks!

Not my favorite kind of music, but pretty damn cool.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 7 April 2006 17:13 (twenty years ago)

Can people still not REQUEST rare stuff, but then rely on people emailing them the file? Means the site is clean of YSI links etc.

Griff Sheridan (Griff Sheridan), Friday, 7 April 2006 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Dan,

did numero group license all these tracks? seems like it would be difficult.

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Friday, 7 April 2006 19:53 (twenty years ago)

yeah...I'm pretty sure Numero Group is on the up-and-up. They're people who used to work at much bigger labels and probably have a great deal of experiance. I have their Antenna reissue and it's beautifully done...and bought the Yellow Pills power-pop comp for a friend's birthday, which is supposed to be great.

Warning over 'illegal' MP3 site

Britons using bargain music download website allofmp3.com have been warned that they are breaking the law.

Record industry trade association the BPI said consumers were breaking UK copyright law because allofmp3.com was not licensed to sell recordings.

The Russia-based site, which offers albums to download for as little as £1, claims to be licensed.

Allofmp3.com is the second most popular download site in the UK, accounting for 14% of downloads, a survey has said.

BPI spokesman Matt Phillips said: "There is no doubt it is totally illegal.

"It is illegal for them to sell the recordings in Russia or anywhere else because they are not licensed, and UK consumers are infringing copyright law because they are making illegal copies from an unlicensed source."

He added: "Because it is a professionally put together site it does look legitimate, although it should be obvious from the price that it isn't."

Rock bottom

Allofmp3.com offers individual tracks for as little as about 4p, compared with about 80p on most sites.

"It is able to charge rock bottom prices as it doesn't pay the artists and record companies, whatever it claims," Mr Phillips said.

The website says it is licensed by the Russian Multimedia and Internet Society (ROMS) and the Rightholders Federation for Collective Copyright Management of Works Used Interactively (FAIR).

But the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) said the ROMS licence was not legitimate and it would not cover consumers in other countries even if it was.

It said criminal proceedings were ongoing in Russia related to allofmp3.com.

Brilliant tracks like Carl Craig's 'Puntang' are now being offered as legitimate digital downloads by the likes of Woolworths which is unexpected, and great!
