So was anyone ever a fan of Pee Shy?

A lot of random major-label alt stuff from the nineties that never made it anywhere I've long since jettisoned but Pee Shy I've hung onto -- Dean Wareham produced the first album, gentle art-pop instrumentation that doesn't make me think of Elephant 6, I always liked them in their quiet but energetic/fun way. Cindy Wheeler and Mary Gudera are now in the Caulfield Sisters, while Cindy's also in something else called Look It with Suzanne from Mercury Rev.

Oh yeah, and Cindy's use/abuse of the accordion is key. Between her and Miss Murgatroyd, that's some good stuff. Nico would be proud.

I have the album with all the monkeys on it. "Jason, I Thought I Saw A UFO" is classic - I think I playedit last time I DJ'd.

They supported Stereolab at Maxwell's. It was aces.

yep I have a cassette dub of that monkey one, haven't listened to it in years

I remember they had a song about the Luby's massacre in Texas

They also had a song called, "Little Dudes." Right? About liking little boys? It was on a CMJ comp when I was 11 or something.

one of my friends in high school was totally a fan of that record. and I randomly met someone else who was really into it more recently. I only have a vague recollection of what it sounded like, though. (xpost, oh yeah! that song on the CMJ cd is the one song I do remember)

It's a really nice record, Wareham and the band did a great job on the coproduction. Understated, very much NOT trying for the radio brass ring circa the mid-nineties but at the same time very immediate -- Wheeler's voice is front and center, the music's gently peppy, the accordion is a killer touch throughout.

You totally sold me, Ned. I'm going to go get this now and we may even cover "Little Dudes."

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 7 April 2006 16:57 (twenty years ago)

:-D (But wait, who is this 'we'?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 April 2006 17:00 (twenty years ago)

Me and m'band. We've been looking for an excuse to bust out the accordion anyway...

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 7 April 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Well there ya go, then.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 April 2006 17:08 (twenty years ago)

did you just decide to cover a song you haven't heard yet?

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Friday, 7 April 2006 17:20 (twenty years ago)

No, I went and got it through totally legal means.

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 7 April 2006 17:22 (twenty years ago)
