When did the mid-90's start looking a lot like the mid-80's?

Justin Shumaker (shueytexas), Sunday, 9 April 2006 01:13 (twenty years ago)

Oxygen?

Harrison Barr (Petar), Sunday, 9 April 2006 01:15 (twenty years ago)

Yes. Okay, they are dancing in a convenience store to "My Sharona."

How is this different from The Breakfast Club?

It's just weird how the 90's and the 80's look so much alike when portrayed in these movies. It's like they melted together.

Justin Shumaker (shueytexas), Sunday, 9 April 2006 01:27 (twenty years ago)

Reality Bites was, in fact, an '80s movie made in the '90s. Except it's awful.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 9 April 2006 01:29 (twenty years ago)

The 90's didn't stop being the 80's until about 1996. It's actually still the 90's now.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Sunday, 9 April 2006 01:37 (twenty years ago)

I had no idea, Alex. Thank you. And tell your brother in NYC hello.

Justin Shumaker (shueytexas), Sunday, 9 April 2006 01:38 (twenty years ago)

so...you watching Indecent Proposal now?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 9 April 2006 03:18 (twenty years ago)

Almost as though the 90s flowed directly from the 80s in a continuous "time progression," if you will.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Sunday, 9 April 2006 04:28 (twenty years ago)

smokemon (eman), Sunday, 9 April 2006 04:59 (twenty years ago)

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 9 April 2006 05:17 (twenty years ago)

Now we move on to the next rite of initation to ILX, the paddling of the swollen ass...with paddles.

Zwan (miccio), Sunday, 9 April 2006 05:28 (twenty years ago)

AaronHz - nice! nearly LOL. smirking in silence.

gspm (gspm), Monday, 10 April 2006 14:57 (twenty years ago)

I didn't watch Reality Bites until I think 2 years ago. I was so fucking confused. "Wait, I thought the 90s looked like NIN and Beastie Boys vidoes. What's up with that girl's hair?"

Eppy (Eppy), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:08 (twenty years ago)

This movie always sucked because there were no scenes with Jaenene Garofalo shaking dandruff onto a piece of paper.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Heh. I thought about watching that movie on TV a couple nights ago. Then I just couldn't somehow. I'm happy with my general memory of it dwindling to the single trivia point that Ethan Hawke's band was called "Hey, That's My Bike" (proto-emo?) and that "to anyone who doesn't like it, I say 'no man can eat 50 eggs.'"

js (honestengine), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:19 (twenty years ago)

All your mommas.

Justin Shumaker (shueytexas), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:20 (twenty years ago)

"My Sharona" = 1979

Martin Van Buren (Martin Van Buren), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:29 (twenty years ago)

"My Sharona" = 1979

"My Sharona" = "1979"

PB, Monday, 10 April 2006 16:26 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

I just saw it for the first time last night and it just reminded me how much time was spent in those years debating whether to sell out (or to "burn out", as it were)

baaderonixx, Thursday, 21 February 2008 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

In my high school, "Singles" was THE DEFINING MOVIE OF OUR GENERATION anyway even if this one was supposed to be (this comment is mainly for the defend the indefensible thread, but I couldn't possibly wade through that thing).

matt2, Thursday, 21 February 2008 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

It's a pretty awful movie, I'll give it that much.

mehlt, Thursday, 21 February 2008 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

if you think thats bad imagine watching.... SINGLES. I marvelled as an 11 year old at all my favourite bands being on one soundtrack then sat through 90 mins of toss about some bird having an abortion or something to see eddie vedder drinkin a brew

straight, Friday, 22 February 2008 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

"Singles" and "Reality Bites"

I think I saw both at the time.

At this remove, I cannot tell one from the other.

Mark G, Friday, 22 February 2008 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

Yes. Okay, they are dancing in a convenience store to "My Sharona."
How is this different from The Breakfast Club?

That convenience store scene in Reality Bites irritated the shit out of me--it just seemed so fake. I couldn't watch that movie when it came out; just found it immensely irritating, especially Ethan Hawke's character (and if 'that was the point!', I didn't care one way or the other).

Joe, Friday, 22 February 2008 13:30 (eighteen years ago)

How is this different from The Breakfast Club?

"The Breakfast Club" was well written.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 22 February 2008 14:13 (eighteen years ago)

Also, not for nothin', but "The Breakfast Club" is about a bunch of high school students questioning their roles in the microcosm of high school. "Reality Bites" is about a bunch of college grads who spend most of their time whining about how life hasn't panned out like they'd expected.
