How is this different from The Breakfast Club?
It's just weird how the 90's and the 80's look so much alike when portrayed in these movies. It's like they melted together.

Almost as though the 90s flowed directly from the 80s in a continuous "time progression," if you will.

"My Sharona" = "1979"

I just saw it for the first time last night and it just reminded me how much time was spent in those years debating whether to sell out (or to "burn out", as it were)

In my high school, "Singles" was THE DEFINING MOVIE OF OUR GENERATION anyway even if this one was supposed to be (this comment is mainly for the defend the indefensible thread, but I couldn't possibly wade through that thing).

It's a pretty awful movie, I'll give it that much.
― mehlt, Thursday, 21 February 2008 20:13 (eighteen years ago)
if you think thats bad imagine watching.... SINGLES. I marvelled as an 11 year old at all my favourite bands being on one soundtrack then sat through 90 mins of toss about some bird having an abortion or something to see eddie vedder drinkin a brew

"Singles" and "Reality Bites"
I think I saw both at the time.
At this remove, I cannot tell one from the other.

Yes. Okay, they are dancing in a convenience store to "My Sharona." How is this different from The Breakfast Club?
That convenience store scene in Reality Bites irritated the shit out of me--it just seemed so fake. I couldn't watch that movie when it came out; just found it immensely irritating, especially Ethan Hawke's character (and if 'that was the point!', I didn't care one way or the other).

"The Breakfast Club" was well written.
― Alex in NYC, Friday, 22 February 2008 14:13 (eighteen years ago)
Also, not for nothin', but "The Breakfast Club" is about a bunch of high school students questioning their roles in the microcosm of high school. "Reality Bites" is about a bunch of college grads who spend most of their time whining about how life hasn't panned out like they'd expected.
