SURFACE OF THE EARTH C/D OR EVEN HEARD

Who are they, they're a New Zealand band who put some records out, the main one's called "Interference" and it's just about the ONLY true drone/whatever album I've ever heard; pure gorgeous amp/room (hall) tones laid into each other and left more or less alone. Listen to it 9-10 times wasted and you might hear some little tiny details underneath, details that've added to the record the whole history of yr life w/it, but as lovely as they are they don't matter. Has anyone heard it tho? I believe Jon Dale has. Many more should. This is a pretty stupid idea for a thread but they deserve it, they really do.

Perhaps I shouldn't've mentioned JD's name so prominently, if so sorry, I can change it if he likes

yeah, that came out on fusetron. also had a cd on corpus hermeticum (which i liked more than "interference"), and one of them (or was it just one guy?) released the k-group cd which is better than both.

I'd better find those, I remember the K-Group Cd being pretty good at the time

I have the Interference LP, I like it for the same reasons you stated. It's got this organic hum to it that I find really intoxicating. I can't imagine it would be that hard to find, does Fusetron still do mailorder and distro? I think so. I almost never see that Corpus Hermeticum stuff, bummer.

Ditto, I have listened to "Interference" an awful lot. You have encouraged me to pull it out and check it again.

Also worth chasing up the few Surface Of The Earth singles floating about. Maybe they're to be tacked on the end of the Fusetron reissue? Fingers crossed. The K-Group/Omit 7" is fantastic too.

And yeah, that SOTE disc on H/Corp is a desert island disc, fersure.

jon dale, Tuesday, 16 May 2006 04:39 (nineteen years ago)

ok, how about somebody reissues the hermescorp disc with a second disc of singles? eh? i'd love to replace this cdr of it with a bona fide copy.

k-group/omit single is indeed cool and probably the kind of thing you can find for $1 if you look around. never got to hear their collab LP on fusetron.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 05:08 (nineteen years ago)

Isn't the H/Corp disc an edited version of the original double-LP/cass - the orig was over 80 minutes long... Hmm a double-disc of that and the singles etc would be fantastic.

How about someone reissuing those New Zealand Guitar Orchestra records too...

jon dale, Tuesday, 16 May 2006 06:36 (nineteen years ago)

been falling asleep to "Voyager" lots lately. HEY ANDREW WE SHOULD HANG OUT & LISTEN TO SURFACE OF THE EARTH.

Hmm a double-disc of that and the singles etc would be fantastic.
ditto!

you're right jon - the cd was a slightly edited version of the 2xlp. can't quite remember what we did, but think we took a chunk out of one of the longer tracks - maybe "arc". most of that stuff was too long anyway... i always liked the short ones best as i often thought of us as a pop group. surface of the earth is still together by the way, though its difficult to record these days as donald lives in china, tony in wellington and me in napier. with a bit of luck, surface of the earth 4 (a cd) will come out this year. thanks, paul.

YEAH LET'S IN FACT MAYBE YOU COULD PUT SOME ON ON SAT PREDANCING

I remember borrowing a Surface Of The Earth H/Corp CD from a friend back in the '90s. It had great black matte postcards, which I enlarged via photocopier, and hung on my wall. I think it was self-titled (?). Anyway, the SOTE entry on Wikipedia needs some help...
