ooh. choosing between L&L and SDMHA is not easy. i don't know the other song.

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Monday, 10 April 2006 01:34 (twenty years ago)

Leather and Lace, easily. I've never really understood the praise for SDMHA.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 10 April 2006 02:00 (twenty years ago)

"Leather and Lace" for its occasional spine-chilling-ness, although "Draggin'" ain't bad as pop goes. It's been years since I heard Frere Kenny.

someone let this mitya out! (mitya), Monday, 10 April 2006 03:47 (twenty years ago)

I vote for "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" as it represents the Fleetwoodization of "Breakdown."

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 10 April 2006 03:52 (twenty years ago)

Is a love so fragile,
And the heart so ho-o-ollow?
Shattered with words
Impossible to follow...

I'm still waiting for the woman who will karaoke it with me. I will marry her. I'll even sing the lame, 70s-tastic "sometimes I'm a strong man" part, just for the pleasure of "and you were right..."

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 10 April 2006 04:30 (twenty years ago)

For Don Henley vulnerability means wearing briefs instead of boxers, but if I need to hear him emote "Leather & Lace" will do.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Monday, 10 April 2006 12:54 (twenty years ago)

WICYF just might be my favorite vocal performance from her, especially when she belts the "there's a reason to carry on" before the final refrain. SDMHA manages to sound not-too-much like a Tom Petty song or a Stevie Nicks song; it's bigger than the sum of its parts. I can't decide between them but I'll take either over "Leather and Lace."

Has anyone done a cover of note of any of these three? I used to wonder what a cover of "... Friend" by Courtney Love and Billy Corgan would sound like.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 10 April 2006 13:04 (twenty years ago)

"Clark?" "Earl?" "Hugh?" A more WASPy assortment of middle names I have never seen. Even if they WEREN'T all multi-millionaires they'd have no trouble getting country-club membership anywhere.

I'll take "Leather And Lace" just for the onomatopeia value alone: Stevie & Don's (great) voices actually SOUND like the titular materials, if you use your imagination.

I have virtually no memory as to what the Petty duet sounds like. That can't be a good thing. (I recall the other two Belladonna singles just fine.)

I've proclaimed my hatred for that Loggins song several times. But the last time I heard it, maybe a year ago, I was in a great mood and the very airiness of the chorus I found suddenly exhilarating. I hope that doesn't mean I'm getting old & senile. (Old and nostalgic: that's a mixture I can live with.)

God, the chorus of "Whenever I Call You `Friend'" (the single quotes in the title are clever) is just glorious.

L&L has some crazy verse structure and timing (not sure that's the right word for all the drops, stretches, gaps in the verse melody)

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 02:13 (fifteen years ago)

I'm as big a Nicks fan as you'll find on ILM (consult the archives) but this spongy kitsch is too much for me -- and Henley admitting he's scared and sometimes cries is too big a leap of faith for me.

look at it, pwn3d, made u look at my peen/vadge (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 02:34 (fifteen years ago)

and the tinkle of that electric piano or Fender Rhodes: ugh ugh ugh
