weasels ripped my flesh

a.b. (alanbanana), Monday, 10 April 2006 14:35 (twenty years ago)

absolutely free

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 10 April 2006 14:36 (twenty years ago)

burnt weeny sammich

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 10 April 2006 14:37 (twenty years ago)

what gave you the hankering for zappa? musicological research?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 10 April 2006 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Groucho wasn't doing it for me.

Washable School Paste (sexyDancer), Monday, 10 April 2006 14:41 (twenty years ago)

I think there's stuff on Freak Out! you'd like.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Monday, 10 April 2006 14:57 (twenty years ago)

yeah, you'd def be into "help i'm a rock"

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:01 (twenty years ago)

HOT RATS!

Le Baaderonixx de Benedict Canyon (baaderonixx), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:02 (twenty years ago)

If you like Faust and Zappa, you'll like Gorky's Zygotic Munki, but that wasn't the question, was it?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:03 (twenty years ago)

I like the early Gorkys, but they went soft

Washable School Paste (sexyDancer), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:18 (twenty years ago)

I ran into a Welsh journalist and he turned practically orgasmic when I could name both Super Furry Animals and Gorky's. "It's like you know my whole country!"

(Go with Freak Out.)

js (honestengine), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:21 (twenty years ago)

freak out & absolutely free are both good albums.
but i can't deal with zappa for more than 20 minutes at a time.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm worried it'll all turn out like Primus meets Beefheart

Washable School Paste (sexyDancer), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:24 (twenty years ago)

do you like beefheart? then add "hot rats" and "bongo fury" to the list.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:25 (twenty years ago)

my main gripe with zappa is the smarm factor.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm not the world's biggest skronk fan. Smarm I had handle if the artist is upset by vision or dogged with chaos.

Washable School Paste (sexyDancer), Monday, 10 April 2006 15:31 (twenty years ago)

i actually think you'd love zappa's smarm.

gravie

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:40 (twenty years ago)

basically the first seven records (1967-1970 with the original Mothers) all have interesting things and were one of the only precedents for a lot of my favorite records, Residents, Faust, Krautrock, any rock/song albums trying out concrete editing etc.

I never quite get completely into any of them, though I got nothing but respect. lumpy gravy has the most extreme editing, weasels is the most songlike, the extended suites on uncle meat are prog way before prog

milton parker (Jon L), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:17 (twenty years ago)

LOL OOPS

shredding repis on the gnar gnar rad (chaki), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:40 (twenty years ago)

basically the first seven records (1967-1970 with the original Mothers) all have interesting things

OTM, but i would disagree that weasels is the most song-like. there some some nice songs ("oh no," probably one of his most melodic from that era), but the majority of it is free-jazz saxophone skronk.

"uncle meat" is also a contender for the sound you are looking for.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:46 (twenty years ago)

MAYBE ONLY KING KONG = FAUSTISH. THERE IS NO ZAPPA THAT SOUNDS ANYTHING LIKE THE FALL.

shredding repis on the gnar gnar rad (chaki), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:49 (twenty years ago)

YEAH BUT WHEN MARK "E" SMITH SAYS "I LIKE FRANK ZAPPA, ME," WHAT DO HE MEAN?

Washable School Paste (sexyDancer), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:51 (twenty years ago)

"picnic on a frozen river, deuxieme tablueax" is the most obv zappa-influenced faust.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 10 April 2006 17:52 (twenty years ago)

>the majority of it is free-jazz saxophone skronk.

you're right! shows you how often I go back to these

my friend Tom played me bits of Apostrophe last year and I was shocked at how much the arrangements sounded like Henry Cow, like it could have been a Cow record. Zappa really was one of the only people on this landscape before most of my favorite bands.

the Residents did a note-perfect cover of 'King Kong' on Baby Sex in 1971, though they played it at half-speed

milton parker (Jon L), Monday, 10 April 2006 18:02 (twenty years ago)

So I just listened to "FREAK OUT" cuz that's what they had at the "RECORD STORE" and I'll say I enjoy the Nuggetsisms and "Teenage Prayer" type goofs and perverse anomaly of multiple male vocals. I like Side Three best and the drum sound. Deft use of session strings/horns throughout, kind of like a paradoxical, ultra-tight Godz or improv-free Red Krayola. Suzy Cheamcheese shit ignorable, though simulates "LSD social fatigue" more realistically than say "Murder Mystery." I can see why processing Zappa on vinyl might have advantages, re: Krupa's 20 mintute jew rule, but shit's all budget-priced so fuck it.

Washable School Paste (sexyDancer), Monday, 10 April 2006 19:15 (twenty years ago)

get "absolutely free" next.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 10 April 2006 19:38 (twenty years ago)

"but the majority of it is free-jazz saxophone skronk."

Kinda. But Zappa was never doing jazz; that's all through-composed shit.

js (honestengine), Monday, 10 April 2006 19:44 (twenty years ago)

I would have got that one first, because even though I like to collect chronologically, I usually don't put much truck in first albums for catalog acts.

Washable School Paste (sexyDancer), Monday, 10 April 2006 19:44 (twenty years ago)

But Zappa was never doing jazz; that's all through-composed shit.

i don't think he composed ALL the solos of his players. especially not in his earlier mothers period.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 10 April 2006 19:52 (twenty years ago)

YOU'VE GOT STINKFOOT-UH

Suzy Creemcheese (SuzyCreemcheese), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 00:41 (twenty years ago)

"ABSOLUTELY FREE" KINDA SOUNDS LIKE THE FALL ALRIGHT THANKS CUTTS

Washable School Paste (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 02:02 (twenty years ago)

re: weasels

"oh no" into "orange county lumber truck"

brilliant

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 04:15 (twenty years ago)

I think it's worth noting that The Fall covered a song from 'Freak Out'.

sleeve (sleeve), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 04:45 (twenty years ago)

Should I go and see Ahmet and Dweezil "play Zappa"?

Le Baaderonixx de Benedict Canyon (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 11:58 (twenty years ago)

i'm tempted

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 12:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure they're good at it. Any FZ alumni in their band? I'd still be tempted to go see Ike Willis or Napoleon Murphy Brock.

Sparkle Motion's Rising Force, Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:15 (twenty years ago)

While I'm working my way through the trio of Zappa LP3s Cutts, Esq. yabootleged me I pause to comment on last nights' TOWERECORDS detour to pick up late-in-the-game long shot 81 double lp "YOU ARE WHAT YOU IS" purchased on account of VH1 classic airing of title promo video and vague promise of synthy overdub prog funk, but what yielded concept "rockopera" slickies kinda like Parliament mixed with what I imagine ELO/Toddgren/SteelyD to be sounding as, but really is more like ARIEL PINK with his shit together and a really expensive sounding vocoder.

(But I'm having a hard time with teh MUPPETS vibe, especially when any sense of "CHOOGLIN" has been replaced with TECHNIQUE DOGS. Tracks like "Goblin Girl" would sound groovy in some crap kids' vid, but not sure for what this music is intended, playback wise. Ugly smart rich dudes with no chicks or ethnic coked up comedians?)

Washable School Paste (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:32 (twenty years ago)

or CGI version of Ralph Bakshi?

Washable School Paste (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:37 (twenty years ago)

ha, well there goes your chronological listening. way to FUCK IT ALL UP.

anyway, stay away from late 70s zappa for now. it will just confuse you.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:39 (twenty years ago)

err, and early 80s.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:43 (twenty years ago)

remember, I like 90s Fall

Washable School Paste (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:44 (twenty years ago)

i like late period zappa too, it's just a hard sell without context. conceptual continuity and all that.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Like his vocal production style very much. It seems to be his "point."

Washable School Paste (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:50 (twenty years ago)

the close-mic'd, up front vocal zappa first appeared on "one size fits all" (1974) and pretty much stuck around for the rest of his career.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:52 (twenty years ago)

i am kind of excited to revisit his discography with you. so much zappa ignorant zappa hatred out there--then ask those people what they've heard and they can't even name a song.

i put on "zoot allures" this morning and shit, that album is killer.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:54 (twenty years ago)

he's got dope pants on that cover

Washable School Paste (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 18:08 (twenty years ago)

this is officially the rolling zappa primer thread

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 18:10 (twenty years ago)

F. Zappa "ABSOLUTELY FREE" indeed, but had to pitch in CDR COST due to IPOD/IZOD fritzage (Where'd you go o music files?) but it seems pretty fucking structures. More totally obnoxious poo poo prune nose jokes and dick outta da zipper shit married to ultra complex allmusic.comage that get's downright early mid period Fall at times, but then goes all "McCartney White Album Tracks" vaudeville which recalls the curious position of LYCAON PICTUS and other pink elephant circus jams with too much show bizisms talent and not enough dumb art beauty. Ironically, I like the skronk parts best.

Washable School Paste (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 19:51 (twenty years ago)

ZAPPA IS NUMBER 1 BEST MUSIC FOR ME, PERSONALLY. ALSO THAT NEW TOUR HAS STEVE VAI, TERRY BOZZIO AND NAPOLEON MURPHY BROCK!!!!

shredding repis on the gnar gnar rad (chaki), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 22:09 (twenty years ago)

The whole album isn't about how hippies are dumb, though. "Concentration Moon" is very moving. And then there's the story of the brothers who make the water turn black and the fire turn green.

x-post

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 22:15 (twenty years ago)

"Mom And Dad" is quite heartbreaking and serious as well, I love that album.

DO NOT PLAY THE SONG UNTIL YOU HAVE READ FRANZ KAFKA'S "IN THE PENAL COLONY"

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 23:03 (twenty years ago)

The Fall - Absolutely Free
Freak Out has "I'm Not Satisfied", which the Fall covered and you could go with We're Only In It for the Money, but I think Absolutely Free has the meanest and most sarcastic lyrics of The Mothers records. I think that nastiness and sarcasm probably has some appeal for Mark E. Smith.

Faust - Uncle Meat
This one has tape edits galore and had to be one that the Faust guys picked up some ideas for work in the studio.

Hot Rats is really, really straight for Zappa. It has one really catchy bluez jam with Captain Beefheart on "Willie the Pimp", one tight jazzy tune with "Peaches En Regalia", a TV theme with "Son of Mr. Green Genes" and one monster blues jam with Sugarcane Harris putting down a monster violin solo on "The Gumbo Variations". Hot Rats is the best record to give to someone who hates Zappa saying that it is all either a big joke or the ugliest music in the world. It is my favorite FZ record.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 23:19 (twenty years ago)

ZAPPAZ ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY CONCEPT LP ABOUT SF-HIPPIES
LOTSA FUN ZOUNDS EVEN MORE LIKE THIS WHERES ARIEL PINKS HIS IDEAS
