Joe Bataan: Call My Name

People, what is up?! Last year, while you were sleeping, Joe Bataan, (everybody's favorite afrofilipino, the guy who gave Salsoul it's name) issued his first new record in years, Call My Name. And while I sorta smell a rat (I suspect this is largely the work of a Dap-Tone or two, and Bataan appears to be more of a straight-up singer than bandleader here), it is still a *brilliant* release, easily the equal of his 70's stuff ("The Bottle" notwithstanding). And it is universally ignored, completely absent from year-end lists. Really, what gives?!

I'm not that familar with his early work, although I do really like a couple songs, so I wouldn't tend to automatically buy his attempted come-back CD. It would make more sense for me to buy some of the older material I haven't heard. On top of that, I saw him perform live a few years back, and I'm afraid it was pretty lackluster (but I realize he was just geting back into the game).

Even descarga.com didn't build it up that much, and they tend to be in the business of dishing out exaggerated praise.
