Built To Spill's "You in Reverse" was worth the wait

I'm a little surprised by this, but "You in Reverse" is great. I wasn't entirely wild about 2001's "Ancient Melodies," but this record blows that one away. Built To Spill fans that like Martsch's guitar sprawl are going to go nuts for it. Which cracks me up, actually, considering that it's sporadically tainted by jam-band, prog and psychedelic elements, which indie types are supposed to loathe. But Martsch is relatively untouchable to his fans, so I understand. Hell, I'm glad. Whatever the case, this is a fine comeback after the five-year disappearing act. Built To Spill isn't only still relevant after 14 years, it's thriving. Seriously, this may wind up as my favorite BTS CD. Whodathunk?

it's sporadically tainted by jam-band, prog and psychedelic elements,

"tainted"?

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 05:15 (twenty years ago)

I anticipate another bearded snooze-fest, like the rest.

sucks or rules, Tuesday, 11 April 2006 05:18 (twenty years ago)

are there BTS fans that DON'T like Martsch's guitar sprawl?

I was being sarcastic in my use of "tainted" -- I dig all those elements.

Mr _Deeds (Mr_Deeds), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 05:31 (twenty years ago)

Going against your mind is a great track, everything else was just "ok" after a first listen.

Mr. Silverback (Mr. Silverback), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 05:52 (twenty years ago)

i love every built to spill record before ancient melodies (C-) and I still think this one isn't very good. Fair to middling. B-.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 06:14 (twenty years ago)

Thus far 4.5 from allmusic, 6.8 from pfm.

Stephen C (ihope), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 06:44 (twenty years ago)

I'd give it an 8/10.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 07:17 (twenty years ago)

I'm excited...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 16:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm cautiously optimistic. I don't rate any of the reviews I've read, and I've only heard one track off it. Ancient... was sorta meh, so I'm hoping for a return to form.

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:04 (twenty years ago)

i didn't like ancient at all initially, then i kept playing it a lot for some reason and it worked it's way into my brain....i actually like it a lot now.

it's a "grower" whereas "perfect from now on" is a "shower", not that i've seen doug's penis.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 17:16 (twenty years ago)

As good as "Keep it Like a Secret?" The highwater mark for me. Almost done DLing the new one from iTunes.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Yes, better than "Keep It Like a Secret." But my highwater mark is/was "Perfect From Now On," unless this album surpasses that.

Mr _Deeds (Mr_Deeds), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 01:21 (twenty years ago)

Their worst album by a fair distance. It wants so badly to be "Perfect From Now On" but the songs just aren't there.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 01:54 (twenty years ago)

Seriously. I love this band, but this album is stiff. Replace the stoner band members with Sam Coomes and let Doug make layers and layers of slidey guitar overdubs.

The album is like Ancient Melodies in terms of songwriting, except the actual sound of the songs is much worse. Waay too raw, and the bass sound/playing bugs me for some reason.

Patrick South (Patrick South), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 06:02 (twenty years ago)

"Keep it Like a Secret" is a damn-near perfect record ... would be tough for Doug to ever top that one. istening to the new one now ... tis very raw so far. Not a bad thing, mind you.

Chris O., Wednesday, 12 April 2006 07:34 (twenty years ago)

KLS IS damn near perfect...but that said, this new one's just what the Dr. ordered for right now.

eedd, Wednesday, 12 April 2006 12:10 (twenty years ago)

Perfect From Now On remains the best. Keep It LIke A Secret is great too, but Broken Chairs drags it down.

Got the new one yesterday, have yet to hear it all the way through. But Going Against Your Mind alone makes it better than Ancient Melodies.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 12:27 (twenty years ago)

Which cracks me up, actually, considering that it's sporadically tainted by jam-band, prog and psychedelic elements, which indie types are supposed to loathe.

Indie types don't like prog or psych? Stephen Malkmus? Elephant six? Indie music in general?

Period period period (Period period period), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:55 (twenty years ago)

I think "Strange" alone makes AMOTF better than YIR.

Patrick South (Patrick South), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 15:43 (twenty years ago)

YIR is fantastic. One of my favorite things about it is the stylistic shift. The rhythm section is way groovier, and the production is rawer. It's easily their best album since Perfect From Now On.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Where is the love for There's Nothing Wrong with Love?

~asl, Wednesday, 12 April 2006 15:57 (twenty years ago)

I think that's the one I like, ~asl

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 16:09 (twenty years ago)

TNWWL is pretty good lo-fi indie pop - very much a product of its time. Dug hit his stride with the cinematic sweep of PFNO and KILAS.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 16:09 (twenty years ago)

i like maybe three songs on this -- it doesn't feel sprawly enough generally, the melodies are too simple, the vocals not funny sounding enough.

this is mainly compared to my memories of perfect from now on, which i haven't listened too in years. maybe i'll go back and listen to that and it won't do it for me either.

something about the weaker songs on this album makes me think of doug yule.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Oh I agree BTS was never better than Perfect (heh). Just saying don't overlook Love. Methinks heartstabbing indee pop can't be done much better than "Car" and "Twin Falls." (And indee pop has maybe never met psych jamz to greater effect than on that Perfect tour.)

~asl, Wednesday, 12 April 2006 16:28 (twenty years ago)

methinks it is annoying to say "methinks"

ath (ath), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 17:32 (twenty years ago)

why do we still waste so much time and effort talking about the new BTS? who cares? they have their fans, they'll sell what they sell, less and less each year and do the same thing each time whoopie. goddam snoozeland over here.

same with the flaming lips, i mean BFD.

banana squad (dayvidday), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 18:06 (twenty years ago)

hey jerkoff, maybe because we are trying to work out how much we like the album and talk about music we like and not just predict sales figures or whatever?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 18:10 (twenty years ago)

same with the flaming lips, i mean BFD

Why don't you post something about it on your stupid mongoloid blog?

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 18:18 (twenty years ago)

i always sort of find these periods of group's existences sort of cool....like what happens to lifers once their little moment in the sun has past....i could kind of see doug m. becoming 90's indie's Neil Young...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 18:19 (twenty years ago)

hey man, i like bts, and i've heard this album and it's more of the same. i just wish talents like doug and wayne would get out of their CMJ "alt-rock" mindset and pursue something different. like a BTS all pop record. no solo, each song under 3:50. hooks galore!

or if the lips stopped tryig to be so "weird" and "psychedelic" and did, I don't know, an acoustic record? give me a career to follow not a sound to glom to for decades, to recoup some indie lifestyle i wish i maintained? music for grups all of it.

banana squad (dayvidday), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 18:33 (twenty years ago)

have you heard mr. martsch's solo record from a couple years ago?

mr. jimmerson, Wednesday, 12 April 2006 18:35 (twenty years ago)

give me a career to follow not a sound to glom to for decades, to recoup some indie lifestyle i wish i maintained? music for grups all of it.

seriously, are we going to using the word "grup" in earnest?

also, Lips have evolved pretty drastically over their career...this "rut" is really only three albums....it sounds nothing like the old shit.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 18:39 (twenty years ago)

Can we as a grup just not even pay attention to the requisite "boring indie sameness" trollage?

So far, this is a pretty great record. I don't like the sub Treepeople album cover, though.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 19:04 (twenty years ago)

haha that does look all treepeople!

for some reason that artwork seems to scream for a homestead records logo on it.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 19:06 (twenty years ago)

The reason it looks like a Treepeople cover is because it's the same artist, Mike Scheer. One of the big reasons that I like this album is because the production is so raw: It reminds me of a live Built To Spill show.

Mr _Deeds (Mr_Deeds), Thursday, 13 April 2006 01:26 (twenty years ago)

I was in love with this the first times I listened to it. I've cooled off on it a bit since, but I still like it. I think my official love affair with YIR had to do with the fact that it wasn't an initial complete disappointment like Ancient Melodies was to me. "Going Against Your Mind" is a standout, as mentioned. The rest of the songs range from good to great, I think. There's not really a obviously skippable track on it.

That said, I kind of agree with Simon H. above in that this album sounds like they were going for Perfect From Now On with the long songs, extended solos in the middle of songs, etc, but that the actual songs just aren't there. Yesterday on the way to the subway I listened to Velvet Waltz from Perfect From Now On, and it was the first song in months that actually gave me goosebumps (and you better, not, be angry! and you better, not be sad!...). Nothing on You In Reverse even approaches that.

Still, a middle album from Built to Spill is miles ahead of most other bands, I think.

Zachary Scott (Zach S), Thursday, 13 April 2006 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Ugh, cheap Chinese beer is kicking my ass tonight.

"first times I listened to it" = "first few times I listened to it",
""a obviously" = "an obviously",
"a middle album" = "a middling album"

Zachary Scott (Zach S), Thursday, 13 April 2006 12:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm really loving this record. What a nice surprise, like many I had written them off due to the stinky nature of Ancient Melodies.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Thursday, 13 April 2006 13:09 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
'Keep it Like a Secret' is one of my five favourite albums of all-time, despite the fact that I always turn it off when it reaches 'Broken Chairs.'

I really find their albums to be growers. I found myself loving 'Perfect From Now On' and 'Ancient Melodies from the Future
years after buying them. In the long run, I have never regretted buying a Built to Spill record. 'There is Nothing Wrong with Love' is great record for what it is. Warm and Fluffy.

All that being said, I am a little disappointed by the new one so far. None of the tracks are really grabbing me. I like 'Liar' and 'Saturday,' but the album seems kind of lukewarm. I really miss the intricate dubbing, and swelling multiple guitar parts. Some of it just seems plain bland ie. 'The Wait.'

I would have to say this album is not worth the wait. There were many times I would killed for another album like 'Keep it Like a Secret'; after a while I would have taken some songs as good as the ones on 'Ancient Melodies of the Future,' which is highly under-rated. I would recommend Built to Spill go back and give that one some more time before giving up.

Who knows? Maybe I will have changed my mind in a couple of years...

The Boy Who Cried YSI? (Freud Junior), Saturday, 29 April 2006 01:36 (twenty years ago)

There are some really good songs on this. And I wouldn't call myself all that much of a BTS fan.
