Oh, and Joe Fagin too, presumably called "That's England alright"

I mean, apart from the "Three Lions" and "Vindaloo" year, you don't get the top 20 full of football songs.

So, that's now Embrace, Bez, Sham 69 and Joe Fagin.

add others..

"Unlike other football songs, this will truly be a single made by the fans, for the fans."

Huh?

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 11:42 (twenty years ago)

do they have to be really happening or can we just make some up?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 11:43 (twenty years ago)

Wait until you hear my song for the Socceroos!

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 11:43 (twenty years ago)

The Socceroos track should be Hilltop Hoods ft Holly Valance.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 11:48 (twenty years ago)

Or maybe the Finn Brothers could put a thousand years of Oz/NZ beef between them and record it as a kind of concillatory gesture.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 11:48 (twenty years ago)

I actually suggested Hilltop Hoods ft. Jimmy Barnes but was laughed out of the building.

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 11:49 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, let's make some up.

Alan Sugar has teamed up with the Sugarbabes to make an alternate alternate alternate alternate England Soccer anthem. Sugar, 57, known for being the man who says "You're fired" on the telly, said it would be written by directors, for directors, and is based on the song that was a hit for the Archies, but would have a chorus of "England! A hole in my arse!". DAve Rowntree of Blur is going to rap on it. The b-side is two budgerigars."

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 11:51 (twenty years ago)

Midnight Oil ft. DJ Dexter 'Balls Are Burnin'

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 11:59 (twenty years ago)

D4L ft Toby Keith: We Know Soccerball

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 11 April 2006 12:04 (twenty years ago)

Are we allowed to suggest unknown no-hopers with a (shit) chorus and nothing else?

two weeks pass...
and now, the desperate controversial one...

http://www.nme.com/news/the-darkness/22914

The Darkness frontman Justin Hawkins is to release his own World Cup anthem - and it's bound to prove controversial.

Going up against Embrace's official Germany 2006 England song 'World At Your Feet', Hawkins has previewed his own song, 'England', under his solo name British Whale.

The star told The Sun newspaper that he thinks England's bid for glory is being undermined by political correctness, with people being too scared to mention the Second World War triumph of 1945.

In response, 'England' mentions the event in the lyrics.

Hawkins said: "The whole point of an England World Cup song is to assert our national identity and talk about the achievements of a great nation.

"Why can't we commemorate all those men who gave their lives in the name of freedom in the war? And, of course, in this case - to bash The Hun? It's a national sport."

The lyrics include lines like: "Football will be our only weapon / skill and power will be our only shield / we've fought them on the beaches / now we'll play them on the field."

Returning to the first one (on this thread anyway)...
Graham Coxon has recorded an unofficial World Cup song.

The guitarist has joined Sham 69's Jimmy Pursey for the reworking of the punk band's 'Hurry Up Harry' into 'Hurry Up England'.

New group Louie also feature on the record, providing backing vocals.

All funds raised from the sale of the single will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust.

A release date for 'Hurry Up England' is yet to be confirmed.

Number 1 for a month.

Doktor Faustus (noodle vague), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Support your local Sham 69, best of the lot and, in buying "Hurry Up England" you will avoid putting more cash into any manufactured pop star's bank account but will be supporting a kids' cancer charity as well as buying a brilliant record.

Right, it seems that the Sham 69 person has decided that he is the people's champion.

Right, it seems that Jimmy Pursey has decided that he is still the people's champion. Basically laying claim to be the number 1 england song of the tournament.

Meanwhile, some band called Ricky (they were on Jo Wiley's radio show on Bank Hol Monday's celebrity day, "Ricky" special) have gone up and down the country, recording at school assemblies, and adding all the vocals so recorded to their song, which is aparently to benefit a childrens charity (forget which one at the moment), but seemingly if every child's family buy one, that's the certain top record.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 1 June 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

Fantastically, I notice from a quick session watching freeview's Ver Hits channel this afternoon that INFERNAL have reworked 'Paris to Berlin' as 'London to Berlin' - essentially, and somewhat self-defeatingly, by changing every mention of the word "you" to "Roo". Goleo the Pervert Lion is in the video, too.

I applaud their shamelessness.

Sham 69's record out this week. Just as well they're through the first round fer sure.

Hows the midweeks?

And wither Wreckless Eric? (His was in HMV this week also)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 16 June 2006 15:00 (nineteen years ago)

So, this week it's

World at yr feet
3 lions
The Sham 69 people's liberation army rise up and take control of the media to proclaim the state independant of bourgeois control and England to win the world cup,
and some song about Jurgen Klinsman.

as a solid bank in the top ten (or thereabouts)

and Stan Boardman, and some sport news station slightly lower down.

Past years, there'd be a ton of different football tribute records, none of which would make the chart. What changed? oh and whatever happened to Bez's one?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 19 June 2006 09:09 (nineteen years ago)

What no mention of master of scansion Tony Christie?

When he croaks "Beckham scores a penalty," that qualifies as a candidate for worst moment in pop music ever.

Re. Colourbox World Cup Theme - did any WC-related records chart in '86, or were any even released? I can't think of any offhand but I'm sure someone will put me right.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 19 June 2006 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

oops quite right. Serves me for typing from memory.

86? I believe there was one, as I remember thinking "They should have used the Colourbox one"

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 19 June 2006 09:41 (nineteen years ago)

Looking through the Top 40s for summer '86, all I could find was "Every Beat Of My Heart" by Rod the Professional Scot. The only other sports-related hits of that period were "Snooker Loopy" and, ahem, "Everybody Wants To Run The World."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 19 June 2006 09:54 (nineteen years ago)

From Everyhit.com:

Special releases:

England World Cup Squad - "We've Got the Whole World at Our Feet" / "When We Are Far from Home" (no. 66 in April)
Heads - "Aztec Lightning" (Theme From BBC World Cup Grandstand, no. 45 in June)
Silsoe - "Aztec Gold" (ITV World Cup Theme, no. 48 in June)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 19 June 2006 09:59 (nineteen years ago)

I remember Aztec Gold to this day but cannot remember Aztec Lightning tho I suspect it may be superior.
