The '-er' rule

Message Bookmarked

It's long been my contention that all bands whose names end in '-er' are SHITE. Examples:
Sleeper
Weezer
Feeder

The only exception I can think of is New Order.

So, is this law PROVEN BY SCIENCE or is it as crap as Feeder?

DG, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

New pseudo-scientific answers!

DG, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe New Order get away with it by having two words in their name?

Bill, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

smoother. also poo.

exception to rule 'herbaliser'.

fields of salmon, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fuck you. I rock.

Colin Meeder, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Christ that was quick! 4 answers in about 20secs must be some kind of record!

DG, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Slayer! Was not shite... for a few albums.

original bgm, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All these lists...

Do the Breeders count? They were good

And how about people in bands? such as Michael Rother, who is not at all shite.

The Selecter weren't bad either.

Ondes Martinot, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

-ers is another matter entirely, and people's names don't count.

DG, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bongwater were far from SHITE. Therefore you are WRONG and your theory is CRAP.

Johnathan, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What he said, if more calmly.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Squarepusher

(I like)

Ondes Martinot, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Johnathan needs to, like, take a chill pill dude!

DG, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Isn't Shiner emo? Score one for science.

Curt, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What about Passion Fodder? Don't really know them but they are a kind of cult band, aren't they?

alex in mainhattan, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes he might need one of those little capsules, but, dude, he is right about bongwater. they were ace! i think the rule applies more specifically to 2 syllable acts y'know, like Mower, or is it Mover, or is it both?

gareth, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Weezer is shite? Even "Pinkerton"? *cries*

Sean, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gareth's thinking more along the same lines as me.

(Yes yes I like Bongwater too but temporarily forgot about them, like someone might have FORGOT ABOUT DRE)

DG, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*cries with Sean*

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You sobbing Weezer fans are just digging a deeper hole!

(see how I SNEER)

DG, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

haha this is the OLDEST THEORY IN ROCK, DG!! Badger!!

mark s, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

When it comes to Weezer, I now sympathize with DG greatly.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, Badger sucked. At least the Badger I met in 1991.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thomas Leer stank.

N., Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know it's old Mark, but I like it.

DG, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How about bands that end in syllables that are pronounced "er", but are spelled differently? Can they count? "Godspeed You Black Emperor!" is the example I'm thinking of right now.

geeta, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No no no, -er it is.

DG, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wagner, Charpentier, Boulanger ... hey, it works for compos-ers.

Georgio Morod-er and Donna Summ-er: nope, doesn't work for disco-er.

Jeff W, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Slayer and Eater slay and eat this rule. - F. WollnER

fritz, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Passion Fodder was great

Jonathan Fire*Eater - also great.

Jazz Butcher - watch it, mofo!

(and New Order) - I think the two-name thing makes a difference.

Dave225, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

.. And Speaker/Cranker will hurt you.

Dave225, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Johnathan needs to, like, take a chill pill dude!

Hum, I wasn't being too serious DG. Maybe I should have used one of those smiley type things. :(

Johnathan, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Madchester temps me to extend this law to genres, but Shoegazer disproves it.

Curt, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Feh no! :-S

Shane Pogue Man, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What about 3 names? [*long pause*] Bob The Builder! Nah.

Speaker/Cranker? Dave225, you're not a clevelander are you?

lawrence kansas, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Former Clevelander - still trying to keep up with the scene. Have you ever seen them?

Dave225, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dave225, yes I have seen them several times. They're excellent. I used to buy records and CDs from the drummer when he worked at Wax Stacks on Lee Road.

lawrence kansas, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cracker: ho-hum (except 'euro-trash girl' which has a great guitar solo) Toploader: booo-ring

rob, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cracker may be the exception.

The rule does not hold for Alice Cooper. At least not old Alice Cooper.

Sean, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've always wanted to see local LA band Cheeseburger, I've heard wonderful things about them.

Never heard Stryper, I bet I'd probably like them if I did. Great look.

Not so hot: Kula Shaker.

Was there ever a band called Looker? There should have been.

Arthur, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Um, Winger? I think for the rule to properly apply, the band name must be of the form "[VERB PHRASE] + -er" - i.e., the "-er" cannot just happen to be part of a root word, as with New Order or Alice Cooper.

Clarke B., Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wanted to say Winger!

Lindsey B, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Harvey Danger, where have they gone?

Lindsey B, Thursday, 14 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

kiwi, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Um, Winger? I think for the rule to properly apply, the band name must be of the form "[VERB PHRASE] + -er" - i.e., the "-er" cannot just happen to be part of a root word, as with New Order or Alice Cooper.

Winger is not of the form you mentioned. Winger was the guy's last name. (Don't ask me how I know this.)

o. nate, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

le hague, Sunday, 30 April 2006 11:12 (twenty years ago)

The 'place name' rule is still more reliable, as far as I know. It has to be stringently applied, though. Variations like the Art Ensemble of Chicago and the New York Dolls are clearly not covered by this rule. Otherwise:

America, Europe, Asia, Berlin, Chicago, Texas, Boston...

I haven't heard Oregon, it must be admitted.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 30 April 2006 12:03 (twenty years ago)
