Tell me: is N.W.A.'s "Straight Outta Compton" the greatest HipHop-track ever?

The more I listen to it, the more I think so. The lyrics, the in-your-face-beat and how everything just perfectly fits together: Man, this has to be the greatest moment in hiphop's history.

the greatest moment in hip hop history is when the first mc got shot, thereby altering the course of the genre from party fun into straight outta compton and etc.

No, but it sure sounded plenty thrilling & unprecedented at the time. Reminded me of The Wild Bunch, being plunged immediately into a maelstrom of gunfire and chaos, with state-of-the-art editing. (If I were trying to sound smart I'd say something like "Only the land of the motion pictures could've produced such cinematic blah blah" but I'd obviously be bullshitting.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:17 (twenty years ago)

Naw, nigga.

It's not even the best NWA track ever.

One of the top 5 videos ever tho.

Jon Passantino, Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:36 (twenty years ago)

I don't think it's the greatest, but a damn fine track, and one of my all-time favourites. It's one of those moments where I actually remember where I was, and what I was doing when I first heard it. My 12-year old ears were not at all ready for that

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:37 (twenty years ago)

this song is super awesome. thrilling, even.

although, in a similar vein for NWA, 100 Miles and Runnin' is almost as good, and probably would've been as good if Ice Cube hadn't jumped ship already.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:40 (twenty years ago)

and I've always kinda thought that the super secret peak of NWA was "The Grand Finale" on the DOC album....i love love love that song, esp. Ice Cube's verse.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:40 (twenty years ago)

"The last song" by Above The Law + NWA from "livin' like hustlers" also rules, tho Cube had bounced by then.

My brother still sez Ice Cube at the apollo in 1990 with P.E and Kool G. Rap is the best show he's ever seen.

Jon Passantino, Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:47 (twenty years ago)

oh man the last song is great! livin' like hustlers is a great album.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:51 (twenty years ago)

my mom brought up some of my old cassettes from her house last time i saw her and i was looking through them and saw a long-lost totally forgotten NWA-affiliated dude called the CPO...anyone remember that?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:52 (twenty years ago)

"Murder rap" !

CPO-to hell and black.

"To hell and black" and "Ren's rhythm" were the shit.

Jon Passantino, Wednesday, 12 April 2006 15:00 (twenty years ago)

Uh, i mean "homicide" instead of "to hell and black".

Jon Passantino, Wednesday, 12 April 2006 15:02 (twenty years ago)

he had a song about a dreaded disease called "CPO-isis"

I have to make a list of all those cassettes so much old bullshit...Bigg Ocean Mobb 415...Awesome Dre and the Hardcore Committee....late period quasi-gangsta UTFO's epic "Bag It And Bone It"....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 15:10 (twenty years ago)

You got the Tarrie B album on Ruthless ?

Keep an eye out for Tom and Tim Passantino too, Buttez.

Jon Passantino, Wednesday, 12 April 2006 15:21 (twenty years ago)

"Murder rap" !
CPO-to hell and black.

"To hell and black" and "Ren's rhythm" were the shit.

Haha, yeah "Murder Rap" had that great Ironside sample. I bought that CPO CD just to get those two songs, they were great.

Ned OTM, but Matt, you're on crack re: 100 Miles. That EP was the suck.

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 15:21 (twenty years ago)

Fuck that. "100 miles and runnin'" ep is what's up. The title cut is dope but it's all about "real niggaz".

The ep and "niggaz4life" lp both shit on "straight outta compton".

Jon Passantino, Wednesday, 12 April 2006 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Okay I just entered the bizarro universe. Gotta go now.

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 15:33 (twenty years ago)

You certainly did. "Straight outta compton" only has 4 or 5 good tracks. The rest of it is cheesy dated L.A electro production.

Jon Passantino, Wednesday, 12 April 2006 15:38 (twenty years ago)

i like the EP, but i was more specifically talking abt. the song 100 miles and running that's awesome!

I like the cheesy dated stuff on Straight Outta Compton!

Niggaz4Life is something I tend to appreciate more than I actually enjoy...the production is amazing though.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 15:44 (twenty years ago)

Is NWA the root of the use of "nigga" in hip hop. I guess "Sucka Nigga" was the first reflexive look at the word - but who started it? It was NWA right? Look at "old skool" hip-hop...they never drop n-bombs.

"If i had a baby i might go broke/ and believe me to a nigga that ain't no joke" - Spoonie Gee, 1980

Jon Passantino, Wednesday, 12 April 2006 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Rappers said "nigga" prior to 1988 but Eazy-E and then NWA came on like they had Tourette's and yeah that was that.

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 16:02 (twenty years ago)

"100 Miles & Runnin'" is totally the best NWA song. (I'm talking out of my ass, I haven't heard everything they've done.)

Rodney's motives are beyond the comprehension of men (R. J. Greene), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 17:37 (twenty years ago)

I think I'd vote for "Straight Outta Compton" as the best NWA song. But not the best hip-hop track ever. Currently I think that distinction belongs to BDP's "My Philosophy".

the last poets were dropping n bombs like there was no tomorrow back in the early 70s. nothing new there.
IMO cube was the talent in in NWA, it was a wrap from the moment he walked. 100 miles decent, but it was the beginning of the end.
Straight outta compton shits all over anything that followed it.

The greatest hip hop track ever is The D.O.C.'s "The Grand Finale" (imho), followed closely by Marley Marl's "The Symphony", so no.

disclaimer: I'm an old fuck.
