Are there any decent magazines that cover all genres of dance music?

Jonathan Harris (Rufus T. Firefly), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:13 (twenty years ago)

inc. Kwaito, Congotronica, favelan grime AND contemporary Benelux jazz funk? I fear not.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:19 (twenty years ago)

hahahahahaha "dance music magazines" ahahhahaha

all the good ones are long gone. unless you can read german, that is.

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:55 (twenty years ago)

It's more about DJ culture and the history of multi-genre dance music, rather than what's hot now, but you should check out Wax Poetics:

natedey (ndeyoung), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 17:22 (twenty years ago)

woah, groove. yes.

i take that last laughter back.

who's heard "What You Say Is More Than I Can Say Isolée Speak & Spell RMX EP"?

natedey (ndeyoung), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 17:24 (twenty years ago)

No, but I'm guessing it contains the same remix that appeared on the vinyl version of "Famous when dead 3". In which case I've heard the main remix, but no dub version (or whatever else is on the ep - unless it's like the cardiolgy ep).

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 18:11 (twenty years ago)

'what you say is more than i can say (isolee speak and spell rmx - long end)' is used to lovely effect on the sascha funke boogybytes vol 2 mix. that whole sascha funke mix is so beautiful. i've been listening to it pretty much nonstop.

geeta (geeta), Sunday, 16 April 2006 02:56 (twenty years ago)

There's also this free dvd magazine called Slices. http://www.eb-slices.net. It's in German and English. Someone told me the people from Jockey Slut have started a new magazine called Dummy but I haven't seen it yet.

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 16 April 2006 08:19 (twenty years ago)

Thanks. Both those magazines look good. I found the web address for 'Dummy'; it is www.dummymag.com. I have also been recommended 'Straight no Chaser' (www.straightnochaser.co.uk), which looks alright.

Jonathan Harris (Rufus T. Firefly), Sunday, 16 April 2006 13:18 (twenty years ago)

SNC is a bit.....dull

can i hi jack this thread to ask geeta what compilations i should get that have been mentioned recently in these parts:

- boogybytes vol 2

the criteria are: "K house" "not too border community (no holden pls im british!)" and "cheesy minimal"

ambrose (ambrose), Sunday, 16 April 2006 13:36 (twenty years ago)

The Boogybytes Vol.2 is really sweet summery, blissful fun. good multipurpose listening. My press release says it's out on the 22nd of May.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Sunday, 16 April 2006 14:32 (twenty years ago)

natedey (ndeyoung), Sunday, 16 April 2006 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 16 April 2006 15:27 (twenty years ago)

You know we love it Ronan!

by the way, I really did love the set at NY. I'm not sure if I got the chance to tell you before you & Geeta ran off...

natedey (ndeyoung), Sunday, 16 April 2006 16:21 (twenty years ago)

hey ambrose! i haven't heard the galluzzi mix! i would recommend the sascha funke mix and the get physical vol. 2 mix. those are both on heavy rotation at my house right now.

geeta (geeta), Monday, 17 April 2006 14:46 (twenty years ago)

the cover of boogy bytes is pretty incredible.

the tracklisting looks good too. Alright Geeta, I've taken the bait and now must search it out...

natedey (ndeyoung), Monday, 17 April 2006 16:54 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
Geeta, you were right about Boogy Bytes 2! It's sweet.

Slices DVD mag have a myspace with some trailers now...

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 13 July 2006 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

Is there any way to set Slices in the US? I doubt it's possible in the Southeast where I am. Could I get a torrent of it I wonder?

Jena (JenaP), Friday, 14 July 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

DJMag has a list of top 50 most influential dance albums list. I know Leftfield - Leftism won it. Anyone know the full list?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 14 July 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

no but mylo was no 3! who has mylo influenced, linus loves?

if you ever do the mail order thing, phonica stock slices. you pay a couple of pounds for postage.

so hongro, so angry (haitch), Saturday, 15 July 2006 09:16 (nineteen years ago)

jesus dummy looks, uh, like a desperate attempt to catch up with the times. (last week's times, but whatevs.)

people who can read spanish should check out Go Mag. really fucking fantastic. my friend javier blanquez writes about half of each issue, which is a good thing.

klaxon my ass (philip sherburne), Saturday, 15 July 2006 10:19 (nineteen years ago)

or maybe i take that back, looking closer at the contents. it's just when i see dirty purdy thangs on the cover i get cynical. or clinical. or something. but der blog over there looks interesting. anyone seen a copy?

klaxon my ass (philip sherburne), Saturday, 15 July 2006 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

don't take it back. really.

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 15 July 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

I was pretty wtf-ed about that cover too, maybe they're hoping for a sales bump this month or something but I don't think having them fronting the mag is a particularly clever move as far as having a "new, exciting music" ethic goes whatever else is inside contents wise. I wouldn't expect say, Plan B to pull that shit.

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 15 July 2006 12:26 (nineteen years ago)

I write the Dummy blog. Yeah the cover-stars so far have been Lady Sovereign and Dirty Pretty Things which I think are both bad choices. And they're doing that Vice-style deliberately-inept photography which I don't like. But the writing is some of the best you'll find in any UK music magazine. Unfortunately it is pretty indie-centric.

Nedpoleon (NedBeauman), Saturday, 15 July 2006 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

two years pass...

Any good ones left? I cant stand Mixmag

mmm-- nothing on paper, my friend, except for Wax Poetics, which runs more to the soul-funk-disco-hip-hop side of things. other than that, the last good issue of any print dance music mag that i ever read was the BERLIN WASTED YOUTH issue of XLR8R, back in 2006.

the table is the table, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

It makes me sad how much XLR8R sucks now. They used to be so great!

pipecock, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 22:57 (sixteen years ago)

oh man, wax poetics is such a waste of paper. i KEEP buying it, and then i kick myself every time i do. it's always so ... underwhelming as far as the quality of thought that goes into it.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 00:07 (sixteen years ago)

i didn't mind the one issue that i've read of faith, you can get free copies w/ your orders from phonica and the like.

mixmag is terrible but i buy it when the CD appeals. why can't it be, i dunno, even at the level that muzik was at when it closed? that was a fun, trashy read but you could tell they knew what they were talking about.

juniper jazz (haitch), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 01:15 (sixteen years ago)

Wax Poetics has gone downhill since it started coming out more than 4 times a year or whatever. and it seems like they mostly just cover shit that is being reissued instead of just going off on whatever good shit there is out there. it's annoying, i've quit buying that mag too.

pipecock, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 03:13 (sixteen years ago)

i read Muzik strictly for the photo captions. hilarious.

pipecock, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 03:15 (sixteen years ago)

i never know in which sense pipecock is using the word "shit"
