I agree with the senitment. I think the idea was planted in my head by an early 80s review of Pete Townshend's "Chinese Eyes" album, remarking how funny the Who used to be and how dour he'd become. I think that was in Stereo Review. Steve Simels? Not a rock luminary, but...
