How many of these do you think were printed? 50,000?

hyde park records (colonel), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Mis-spelling of OPEN was indeed a joke. Co-worker sure didn't ger it.

hyde park records (colonel), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Dave Fudger?

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 16:39 (twenty years ago)

hyde park records (colonel), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 16:42 (twenty years ago)

Jack Goode?

C'mon, clue us in here.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 17:06 (twenty years ago)

There are several glaring typos in that excerpt. Any decent copy editor would have caught them.

Good thing I'm in IT, then, cause I don't see shit.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 17:18 (twenty years ago)

I'm assuming the one that raised ire was:

"Yet in April 1977, a mere five months prior to the recording of Pink Flag in September 1997..."

Typical key-entry mistake, with double numbers upping the chances.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Haha dudes, yeah, it only gets worse:

"The band that was to become Wire had is beginnings in an end-of-term performance in June 1996 at Watford art school..."

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 17:22 (twenty years ago)

It's a DAMN good thing I'm in IT.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 17:24 (twenty years ago)

Timeless indeed.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 17:26 (twenty years ago)

Apart from awful writing, a "which"-vs-"that" error, and the general British ridiculousness with regard to comma use, the other galling things would be here:

"The drummer-less combo featuring Gilbert on rhythm guitar, Newman on vocals & Gill on lead guitar / vocals were joined by ..."

(Yes I do count the ampersand as galling -- I mean, why? No other serial lists here use ampersands.)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 17:39 (twenty years ago)

do they really sound that much better than the recent UK EMI reissues?

[/pertinent topic]

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 18:17 (twenty years ago)

Your headline needs some proofreading

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 19:22 (twenty years ago)

this is so totally galling with soul jazz reissues, too. i can't bear to flip through the lavish booklets that come with those beautifully-packaged discs anymore. every single one is riddled with typos. i would almost volunteer to edit all of their liner notes for free, just so i don't have to come across those egregious spelling and punctuation errors ever again.

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 19:29 (twenty years ago)

"The band that was to become Wire had is beginnings..."

Jason Toon (Jason Toon), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 19:33 (twenty years ago)

maybe if they had used a readable serif typeface instead of that abominable stretched out helvetica rip-off, the copy editor would have caught it. i couldn't find the typos myself because i couldn't bring my eyes to follow the text.

proof reading vs proofreading

the unbearable lightness of peeing (orion), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 21:06 (twenty years ago)

hi hyde park records! how is the business going? i actually was there on your first day, not that i knew it--i was just in the neighborhood and stopped by, and bought an ethiopiques comp.

j.h., Wednesday, 12 April 2006 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Um no Whiney G, just didn't see your 'proofread' post until after I posted mine. It was a kind of 'please forgive me/don't hit me for my oversight' kind of gesture. Or sumfink.

dr lulu (dr lulu), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 22:40 (twenty years ago)

Poor Ben Edmonds' Mojo book on Marvin Gaye is riddled with them and, sadly, I don't think its a joke.

natecavalieri (phonetagged), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 23:35 (twenty years ago)

i would almost volunteer to edit all of their liner notes for free

i would edit soul jazz liner notes just for soul jazz freebies. soul jazz -- call me!

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 23:47 (twenty years ago)

(although i'd have to resist correcting all the funny british spellings)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 23:50 (twenty years ago)

are these out already?

Christopher Costello (CGC), Thursday, 13 April 2006 03:16 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the worst is when they released that album with the 'e' left off the end of the band's name!

Porcupine Kiss, Novacaine Lips (Bimble...), Thursday, 13 April 2006 17:56 (twenty years ago)

*rim shot*

latebloomer: Ambassador With Training In Righteousness (latebloomer), Thursday, 13 April 2006 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Saw a copy of "Chairs Missing" - where are the lyrics?

D.D. Disappointed Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:01 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, who knew Robert Gotobed was born female?

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:01 (twenty years ago)

Chortling along with the lyric sheet is a prerequisite of any Wire album

D.D. Disappointed Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:05 (twenty years ago)

Ha, beautiful catch -- I totally missed the "nee."

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:13 (twenty years ago)

Are these on the UK versions or the US versions? I was less interested in buying them due to the lack of bonus tracks.

Libbey Adams, Saturday, 15 April 2006 06:24 (twenty years ago)

"The drummer-less combo featuring Gilbert on rhythm guitar, Newman on vocals & Gill on lead guitar / vocals were joined by ..."

Nothing wrong with that "were" - UK convention is to treat singular nouns containing multiple people (bands, sports teams etc) as a plural, for instance "The band were in the middle of a tour" or "Chelsea were playing an away game at Arsenal".

Rest of it is shoddy though. lf OTM about the horrible font.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Saturday, 15 April 2006 07:51 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
So, box set has arrived, all very nice & shit (except it is maybe just a little weird to read the praise in the notes and then find out it was written by Colin Newman himself), and the booklet has been proof read!

Unfortunately...

original sentence in colonel's scan up there:
"The band that was to become Wire had is beginnings (...) in June 1996"

Okay, both that 1996 and the "is" were probably a typos, shit happens, but look at the new version in the box set booklet:

"The band that was to become Wire had it's beginnings (...) in June 1996"

IT'S !?

*sigh*

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 10:49 (nineteen years ago)
