June Pointer, the youngest of the Pointer Sisters died from cancer today in LA. She was 52 years old. The Pointer Sisters are kind of negelected when there's talk about the 80's but they pretty much owned that decade.

:(

"Automatic" is one of my favourite songs ever.

I grew up with The Pointer Sisters. My mom played the "Black & White" and "Break Out" cassettes all the time.

Jed OTM about "Automatic". One of the greatest singles from the early 80s.

Major suck. :-( RIP.

"Yes We Can Can" the best thing that Blue Thumb "printed".

"How Long" changed my life as a kid. One of the first funk/disco epics I ever heard -- still to this day. My mom always dug the "betcha gotta chick on the side, sho you gotta chick, i KNOW you gotta chick on the SIIIIIIIIIIIDE" and we used to repeat that line to each other all the time. That album, Steppin' (1975), also featured Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder. All those early albums are grossly overrated.. even the more standard That's A Plenty.

This is very terrible indeed, given it was the youngest of the three, during their 80s success. :(

overrated or underrated, donut?

I remember as a 4-year-old thinking that June looked so pretty on the Break Out cover art.

overrated or underrated, donut?

My bad. Underrated... duh.

A heroine falls.

Yeah, there are only a handful of 80s singles as absolutely, luxuriantly joyful and un-hateable as "Jump! For My Love." And "I'm So Excited." And their version of "Fire" is still definitive. Damn, what a loss.

phil d. (Phil D.), Thursday, 13 April 2006 11:22 (twenty years ago)

the youngest one, sheesh...

my first exposure to the Pointer Sisters was the background vocals they provided (along with Liza Minelli) for Alice Cooper's "Teenage Lament '74"...

RIP

wow! the above is from Sesame Street, right? that really takes me back—had no idea it was them, but it makes perfect sense…

her verses on "I'm So Excited" are really poignant…RIP.

that's a great video there...I also have an early memory of "Yes We Can Can" being used in PSA's for some anti-pollution campaign...

RIP June.

Sad news indeed - what a terrible month April has been. A Pointer Sisters collection is among the last CDs I bought, and one of the most effortlessly enjoyable.

I always found it surprising that there was no thread devoted to the Sisters. Someone more qualified than myself will likely do so, now.

R.I.P.

Also xpost - I know I'm gonna spend a huge portion of the day mentally counting to 12, over and over...

My first exposure was "Cloudburst," back when I knew nothing about Lambert, Hendricks and Ross. That first LP on Blue Thumb ("Yes We Can Can," "The Way I Feel" etc.) is a longtime favorite. They also do amazing backup vox on Kathi McDonald's "Insane Asylum," another personal fave.
