Or so it seems - I found it out on a list from one of our suppliers, the label is called Mr.Nobody.
I always heard good things about this album, I'm really curious to listen to it!

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Thursday, 13 April 2006 12:26 (twenty years ago)

Heya Marco. ;-) Never heard of this, what's the story?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 April 2006 14:27 (twenty years ago)

I was reading about this band in an old Wire Invisible Jukebox, sounds interesting!

D.D. Disappointed Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 13 April 2006 14:30 (twenty years ago)

if you like Blue Oyster Cult...kinda 60s garageband cum protometal

probably a Tim Ellison/Scott Seward/Xhxck&Co kinda record

got an old scratchy vinyl LP on these guys, like to hear em on CD.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Thursday, 13 April 2006 14:37 (twenty years ago)

It was described in Wire as being a kind of pop version of the Velvet Underground - I think it was Damon & Naomi Thingy it was played to and they both thought it was Lou Reed to begin with

D.D. Disappointed Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 13 April 2006 14:41 (twenty years ago)

"if you like Blue Oyster Cult...kinda 60s garageband cum protometal"

if it sounds like this, its REALLY my kind of record.
I just want to hear more proto-punk/proto-metal/early 70's American underbelly these days...

(ciao Ned!)

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Thursday, 13 April 2006 15:00 (twenty years ago)

Heya Marco. ;-) Never heard of this, what's the story?

Oh yes you have, Ned.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 13 April 2006 15:16 (twenty years ago)

"I just want to hear more proto-punk/proto-metal/early 70's American underbelly these days... "

Then pick up the two Pentagram reissues on Relapse immediately: First Daze Here and First Daze Here Two.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:02 (twenty years ago)

I heard this recently & was a bit disappointed - not as proto-punk as I'd hoped. More Doug Yule than John Cale. Maybe the Flamin' Groovies. Very "1970 Kama Sutra"-ish, which is only natural I guess. I'm sure further listenings will reveal more facets. (Hope so, anyways...)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:06 (twenty years ago)

I have never heard Squeeze, but if Doug Yule's songs are even anywhere near as good as Hackamore Brick's then it must be pretty good! This is one of my favorite albums ever. Every song is charming. Can't tell you how much I like this more than an album like Flamin' Groovies' Teenage Head, but when you hear the chorus come in on "I Watched You Rhumba" then maybe you will know ...

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 13 April 2006 17:28 (twenty years ago)

(Sorry, I don't mean to come off as pedantic. This album is just kind of fundamental for me.)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:04 (twenty years ago)

I'm looking forward to hearing this album!

D.D. Disappointed Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:06 (twenty years ago)

AN AMERICAN CLASSIC

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:15 (twenty years ago)

FINALLY!

One Kiss Leads to Another is always my standard answer whenever there's talk about albums that need to be reissued on CD. There's also a slight country rock influence in addition to proto-punk. If the Flying Burrito Brothers attempted to cover the Velvet Underground's 3rd album the end result would sound similar to Hackamore Brick.

Is there a release date set yet?

Jeff K (jeff k), Thursday, 13 April 2006 21:15 (twenty years ago)

I think it's already out. From what I hear, it's a bootleg version, but I guess the sound is supposed to be OK?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 13 April 2006 21:17 (twenty years ago)

oh, this is what Alan Licht played for Damon and Naomi.

does this really garner comparisons to Teenage Head?

and Marco, your package arrived today, cosmically aligning in the post so as to arrive along with the new Oneida!

Beta (abeta), Thursday, 13 April 2006 21:27 (twenty years ago)

Bootleg version? My enthusiasm has vanished. I want a two-disc deluxe edition thingy with the best kind of remastering available, out-takes, singles, maybe a few live tracks, fantastic liner notes (possibly written by R. Meltzer) . Hackamore Brick deserve no less!

But beggars can't be choosers. (off to hunt it down)

Jeff K (jeff k), Thursday, 13 April 2006 21:27 (twenty years ago)

I think the single (their version of the Coasters' "Searchin'" - which is classic) is included.

Andy, they weren't as tight as the Flamin' Groovies, but had great songs.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 13 April 2006 21:30 (twenty years ago)

Christgau gave it a B. He's fairly accurate despite the mediocre grade.

One Kiss Leads to Another [Kama Sutra, 1970]
This audition tape by the Venus in Furs Society--a record collectors club whose firsthand contact with "decadence" consists of one DMT experience and moderate quantities of oral sex--bears a spooky resemblance to The Velvet Underground (LP number three, the lyrical one). Chick Newman's sour pitch has the deadpan emotional resonance of Lou Reed's, only folkier and more sanguine. The flat, droning beat is pure Maureen Tucker. And the organ solos are obviously an hommage to John Payne of the Serpent Power. B

Jeff K (jeff k), Thursday, 13 April 2006 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Stigliano reviewed the reissue on his blog the other day:

http://black2com.blogspot.com/

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 13 April 2006 21:39 (twenty years ago)

Chris Stigliano is directly responsible for turning me on to Hackamore Brick. He dropped their name in every issue of Black to Comm. Them and Von Lmo, thank you Chris!

Jeff K (jeff k), Thursday, 13 April 2006 21:48 (twenty years ago)

Oh those sweet bananas!

NickB (NickB), Friday, 14 April 2006 04:59 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty sure I'll love Hackamore Brick: every description make them sound exactly as I want them to sound. This and the Groovies' comparisons just add mad anticipation.

ps Andy: glad this time the package arrived safely - just let me know what you think of it!

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Friday, 14 April 2006 05:49 (twenty years ago)

...and now I want them to re-release Randy Holden's "Population two"!

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Friday, 14 April 2006 06:02 (twenty years ago)

I spilled beer on my Hackamore Brick album last weekend :9:( ;(:*(

:9:(:

however, life gets better right ? i hope so. get one again some day -- it's kinda my mantra. I spilled beer on my Hackamore Brick rec just this las t week .. in a bad way; well; the rec is OK; the cover is shot. me & my Sierra Nevada annual IPA. b rutal.

boy did I ever love it before ruining it in drunkeness.. oh well; leave to to sell old vinyl in eBay anyway

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 14 April 2006 06:22 (twenty years ago)

anyway .. it's all good .. owned this BANANA rec for yrs ... Just inda worn mine out.....

n00b w/ VU fetish from HOBOKON ---- THis Bad Bouy is yrs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 14 April 2006 06:25 (twenty years ago)

But it is not as good as LOADED

it want't to be, but.... NO

it almost kind of wants to be NIGHT MOVES

,but .... no

it is what is, tho ... FANTASTIC record

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 14 April 2006 06:33 (twenty years ago)

oops I confused HB w/Black Pearl upthread IS MY FACE RED...gonna get the reissue since apparently I haven't heard it.

(Did this with Donald Byrds LPs a few weeks back, arguing about ELECTRIC BYRD while hearing SLOW DRAG in the canyons of my mind)

is there some ILM protocol insisting that Bob Xgau reviews be posted on every thread? cause he CAN be a good touchstone but that HB blurb is sorta unilluminating and quite patronizing.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Friday, 14 April 2006 09:14 (twenty years ago)

We use them to justify our love.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 April 2006 13:42 (twenty years ago)

You know why I like this album more than Loaded? Because a lot of the cuteness on Loaded ("Cool It Down," "I Found a Reason") is kind of coy and unconvincing. Hackamore Brick were more keepin' it real.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:55 (twenty years ago)

"I Watched You Rhumba" is actually a good example of exactly how tight this band COULD be. Really good drummer - the fill near the end of "Searchin'" is a good example of the guy's chops.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 15 April 2006 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Well, at the very next corner, I pulled up to a Jag
The driver turned around and he challenged me to drag
I looked at the highway stretched out ahead
And I told my baby to take him easy
And to tell me if she heard our song on the radio

Well, after awhile, we were leavin' him behind
We were singin' with the record, her favorite song and mine
My babe leaned out, you know, to give him the finger
Well, I just didn't notice as she fell out of the window
I was singin', singin' to the song on the radio

Well, I turned around quickly/She looked very sickly
I felt myself cryin'/My babe, she was tryin'
To give me her hand/She kissed me one last time
And we hummed the last bar of her favorite song and mine
As it played ... on the radio

Well, sometimes when I'm ridin' late in the evening
I feel her beside me/Hear her singin'
It's my old love/You know, she's somewhere above me
I can almost taste her lips when I'm kissing my new girlfriend
And we're listening ... to our song on the radio

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 15 April 2006 17:55 (twenty years ago)

(Lou Reed was NOT writing lyrics as good as those on Loaded. Maybe "Ay chee chee, chee chee ay, tai tai ko - on ice skates scraping chunks" etc. But Loaded? No.)

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 15 April 2006 18:09 (twenty years ago)

I finally got it and yes its GREAT! I can't judge the sound quality of this bootleg, but those tight, slightly deranged songs are excellent.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Thursday, 27 April 2006 05:53 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

Love this record.
Some really transcendent moments on this. Just.. you know. So good.

ian, Friday, 27 February 2009 03:46 (seventeen years ago)

i got the mr. nobody reissue. i find it as exciting as cold oatmeal.

DONKEY CANCER in action (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 27 February 2009 04:37 (seventeen years ago)

it's certainly lot proto-metal as it's billed up top!
it's a velvetsy hippie-rock record with a few duds, but overall it's better than a lot of shit released in 1970.

ian, Friday, 27 February 2009 05:00 (seventeen years ago)

lot = not

ian, Friday, 27 February 2009 05:07 (seventeen years ago)

the walls i might be buried in are three feet thick

That's not just me saying that, that's the Pentagon. (contenderizer), Friday, 27 February 2009 05:09 (seventeen years ago)

There's no arguing with Zip Gun Woman, but some of the album is pretty sappy. Sappy in a good way though, same sort of sappy as Todd's Runt maybe?

Frank Sumatra (NickB), Friday, 27 February 2009 09:06 (seventeen years ago)

i still love it, and yes it is indeed sappy in the best way possible.
the mr nobody reissue, by the way, is really really poor sounding.

Marco Damiani, Friday, 27 February 2009 09:14 (seventeen years ago)

two weeks pass...

you know she's warmer than the fourth of july

ian, Monday, 16 March 2009 23:03 (seventeen years ago)

five months pass...

just a bump cuz this record is still fucking amazing.

ian, Thursday, 27 August 2009 00:51 (sixteen years ago)

i always end up back at oh those sweet bananas

king boy pamito (electricsound), Thursday, 27 August 2009 00:55 (sixteen years ago)

my faves are probably Got A Gal Named Wilma, I Watched You Rhumba, and Peace Has Come... but Bananas, and Zip Gun Woman... whole record is really solid imo.

ian, Thursday, 27 August 2009 00:56 (sixteen years ago)

summer jams. all of them. summer jams.

ian, Thursday, 27 August 2009 15:14 (sixteen years ago)

This never was reissued, was it?

Aw naw, no' Annoni oan an' aw noo (Tom D.), Thursday, 27 August 2009 15:15 (sixteen years ago)

There's an (allegedly) crummy CD bootleg, but I'm not even sure if that's still available.

ian, Thursday, 27 August 2009 15:20 (sixteen years ago)

A few years back there was a CD reissue on a label by the name of Mr. Nobody. I don't know if it was official. Plus, I don't think the sound is too great (though I've never heard the album, so that's just a guess.)

QuantumNoise, Thursday, 27 August 2009 15:23 (sixteen years ago)

Ian and I are probably talking about the same disc.

QuantumNoise, Thursday, 27 August 2009 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

Its crummy and is a bootleg, but its still available.
Rther aptly, the "label" is called Mr Nobody.

Marco Damiani, Thursday, 27 August 2009 15:28 (sixteen years ago)

ooops, WQuantumNoise, didnt see your posts!

Marco Damiani, Thursday, 27 August 2009 15:29 (sixteen years ago)

Can't some non-crummy people reissue it? I imagine you would need a non-crummy copy of the original album, and that might not exist.

Aw naw, no' Annoni oan an' aw noo (Tom D.), Thursday, 27 August 2009 15:30 (sixteen years ago)

was just looking and there's a sealed copy for sale on ebay for $87

the turdlike genius of Jeff Tweete´ (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 27 August 2009 15:31 (sixteen years ago)

It's good, but it's not $87 good IMO.

Peinlich Manoeuvre (NickB), Thursday, 27 August 2009 15:33 (sixteen years ago)

At least the bootleg has the b-side of the single - a rather good, NRBQ-like cover of "Searchin'".
But yes, please someone give us a legit reissue right now.

Marco Damiani, Thursday, 27 August 2009 15:34 (sixteen years ago)

It's good, but it's not $87 good IMO.

But somebody can buy it and then use the copy to make CDs and then sell it to the, oh.... one, two.... uh.... three.... five people on this thread.... uhhhhh

Aw naw, no' Annoni oan an' aw noo (Tom D.), Thursday, 27 August 2009 15:36 (sixteen years ago)

The last two copies to go up for auction sold for $10 and $25. It's really not that expensive or hard to find.

Hatch, Thursday, 27 August 2009 15:40 (sixteen years ago)

but this is SEALED!

yeah somebody please start a record label thx!

the turdlike genius of Jeff Tweete´ (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 27 August 2009 15:41 (sixteen years ago)

Mosurock knows Hackamore Brick. Maybe he knows about any possible reissue news?

QuantumNoise, Thursday, 27 August 2009 16:02 (sixteen years ago)

one month passes...

this album is pretty great. it's a very modest album, so it may disappoint some drawn in by the hype.

i think "oh those sweet bananas" is a lost classic. in a way it reminds me of wire -- it's so short, it says its piece and ends. certain parts of the melody are barely repeated at all, despite being incredibly catchy. if the song went on longer it might get cloying (as some of the other tracks on the LP threaten to do) but ending when it does, it's just perfect.

amateurist, Saturday, 24 October 2009 05:36 (sixteen years ago)

five months pass...

Are we aware that they've been playing little gigs in nyc? Two of them, anyway.

Thus Sang Freud, Tuesday, 20 April 2010 20:23 (sixteen years ago)

There's a a great article/interview with them in a recent issue of Ugly Things, which is not online unfortunately. As usual with UT it's indepth and enthusiastic but the HB didn't seem to be buying the idea that there are folks out there who are interested in owning or listening to their stuff. I think they also admitted that they had a lot of unreleased recordings which were supposedley even better than the released stuff. Gonna have to dig out that mag again.

everything, Tuesday, 20 April 2010 21:04 (sixteen years ago)

I heard they played a show in NYC maybe 4 months ago? and that it was mediocre.

ian, Tuesday, 20 April 2010 21:31 (sixteen years ago)

two years pass...

Apparently playing WFMU fair in November. Ian I expect a show report!

Stormy Davis, Tuesday, 23 October 2012 05:47 (thirteen years ago)

they played a while back after an initial reunion -- it was okay! i'll report back, mr. stormy davis.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Tuesday, 23 October 2012 14:43 (thirteen years ago)

eight months pass...

Seven years late but this is being reissued

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Thursday, 11 July 2013 15:45 (twelve years ago)

want

Trip Maker, Thursday, 11 July 2013 15:52 (twelve years ago)

There's going to be an album of unreleased tapes too. (Not on same label, I don't think.)

timellison, Thursday, 11 July 2013 16:06 (twelve years ago)

There's great-sounding 45 of their best tune out now: http://www.uglypop.bigcartel.com/product/hackamore-brick-oh-those-sweet-bananas-45-up040
I'm pretty sure that Ugly Pop is on the up & up, not a bootleg.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdF-aGR8-_s

brio, Tuesday, 16 July 2013 17:18 (twelve years ago)

Ha, we should do a Hackamore Brick OPO. I think I might pick "I Watched You Rhumba."

timellison, Tuesday, 16 July 2013 21:00 (twelve years ago)

Zip Gun Woman ftw

kaptn barfhard (NickB), Tuesday, 16 July 2013 21:07 (twelve years ago)

one month passes...

Wrote on "I Won't Be Around," which I think is the sleeper track on the album:

http://thisiheard.blogspot.com/2013/08/hackamore-brick-i-wont-be-around-1970.html

timellison, Monday, 19 August 2013 05:28 (twelve years ago)

Man, this new CD version of the album is CLEAR.

timellison, Monday, 26 August 2013 22:24 (twelve years ago)

It's making me realize all the more how much I love the sound on this album - that clean electric guitar sound that you get later in the Modern Lovers, the big rumbling bass, the primitive hard panning of things in the mix (including the drum set), the pounding piano on "I Watched You Rhumba," and the organ that could be from a Seeds record.

timellison, Tuesday, 27 August 2013 18:07 (twelve years ago)

Really digging the mono single mix of "Radio." It's like a more primitive equivalent of "Overnite Sensation (Hit Record)."

Never realized it has SIX verses, plus three utterances of the chorus. (And the chorus has two parts; the second time through, the second part has different words - "It's old sounds, new sounds, rock sounds, blue sounds" etc.)

There's also a little instrumental link that happens twice, characterized by a lead bass line. Second time, they add guitar chords at the end and this leads to the third verse, where suddenly it's just the piano accompaniment. Accompaniment builds gradually through all the remaining verses and the final chorus.

What a great record!

timellison, Tuesday, 3 September 2013 19:36 (twelve years ago)

One of the very first things I sought out (and quickly found) when I started downloading stuff 10 years ago. (Stranded's discography being where I first read about it, not surprisingly--also went searching for the Col. Jubilation B. Johnston & His Mystic Knight Band and Street Singers LP, which I'd stopped believing even existed.) It didn't make a big impression, maybe it's time to give it another try.

clemenza, Tuesday, 3 September 2013 19:42 (twelve years ago)

two years pass...

New album, Snails in Astoria, is fantastic. Worthy of One Kiss.
