because she doesnt seem to have a thread of her own, and those nice people at Bo' Weavil are reissuing a double album of her Topic recordings in a couple of weeks, one half of which is her debut album which went for £248.50 on ebay the other day.

On offer here is the VERY VERY RARE original UK debut album by Anne Briggs - "Anne Briggs"(Blue Topic 12T 207) MONO. Released in 1971, this album is now VERY RARE AND SOUGHT-AFTER!!

Yes, she's awesome. I only know bits and pieces, so can't really contribute much to the thread, sadly, aside from the fact that one of my friends' mum knew her. w00t!

i don't like her approach to singing ballads very much. her singer-songwritery stuff is ok.

My very favourite singer. I'm hoping she'll return, a la Vashti Bunyan, and record new material. I can but hope.

Classic. Just last night (and the night before) I was listening to the Topic anthology cd before I went to sleep. How are the other albums?

Chairman Doinel (Charles McCain), Thursday, 13 April 2006 22:29 (twenty years ago)

The sustained intensity in A Collection (the topic anthology) is astonishing. If I did buy vinyl that would be a mandatory purchase for me.

The later albums are lighter/less wearying/less electric. Some of the songs are memorable, some endearingly clumsy and even poppy.

one year passes...

"the time has come" and "sing a song for you" are rare diamonds of beauty.
and i'm not a traditional folk fan usually, but this is pure and unique beauty.

hadn't seen that before - beautiful!

was wondering what programme it was taken from and then billy connolly appeared at the end of the clip. US ilxors might not know who he is - he's actually a super famous scottish stand-up, but he was a musician before that and was in the humblebums with gerry rafferty. wasn't actually aware of this factoid about the humblebums, some serious folk-rock cred here:

In 1969 Rafferty became the third member of a folk-pop group, The Humblebums, along with comedian Billy Connolly and Tam Harvey. Harvey left shortly afterwards, and Rafferty and Connolly continued as a duo, recording two more albums for Transatlantic Records. A 1970 appearance at the Royal Festival Hall, supporting Fotheringay with Nick Drake earned a positive review from critic Karl Dallas, who noted that all three acts showed "promise rather than fulfilment", and observed that "Gerry Rafferty's songs have the sweet tenderness of Paul McCartney in his 'Yesterday' mood"

Connolly talks a fair bit about Rafferty and Nick Drake on the Adam Buxton podcast. It's a great interview.

Briggs is glorious. Her version of Thorneymoor Woods slays me.

I think US ILXors will know who Billy Connolly is.

On a certain level. Connolly had a flash of fame over here in the late 80s on TV via Head of the Class but mostly is known for various movie appearances -- the John Brown/Queen Victoria film for instance -- though the standup has gotten some increasing traction here and there IIRC. Possible I'm missing something. An old girlfriend was Scottish and therefore I learned a lot re his standup work.
